chow yun-fat plays this fight so well. He's not cocky in the fight. Just deadly serious. Like he's projecting that "this is life or death" and because of that he is not egging the attackers or insulting them, just exacting in his counters.

That's the kind of fight I like to see in these kinds of movies. The sincerity of the protagonist makes it all the more impactful. He isn't talking tough because his fists and the blade of his knife already says everything that needs to be conveyed. In response to his sincerity and show of skill his enemies are wary and fearful. After all, not many people would want to fight someone who isn't at all intimidated by someone pointing a large, cleaver-like blade in his face. On top of that, the cinematography of the scene is as equally excellent as the fight itself. Something about the small amount of light from the building's neon sign beaming down on all of them and even the water from the leaking roof washing away the blood on Chow Yun Fat's knife just adds something to it all that makes me think, "This is how a Hong Kong-style street brawl was meant to be presented in film."
