Military academies can't really be compared. Cops train for different things. You work with the enemy and we work with the public. One thing I found is that ex-military people tend to do better at PT in the academy, but much worse at things like firearms (We shoot to stop the threat; you shoot to destroy. Accuracy is more important for cops and scored harder.), search procedures, evidence collection and report writing. You train to track and kill the enemy. We deal with preserving innocent life.

@neckarsulme You know why most of them are traffic related? Well, it is because CHP officers are highly trained and most likely they will never lose in a fist fight or a gun fight. Their job is extremely dangerous I dont know what you are talking about. I know plenty of officers and they have all been in a lot of fights on the side of the road. I like the police training in USA..it is a real tough military training,exactly how it should be for a cop who's going to face criminals.Here in Greece,cops receive just a childish training.They don't even learn how to use their guns correctly!

There are probably some that could help you out with social skills too. Then again, if you keep jumping out of your car when you get pulled over it will soon be a moot point. Good luck pal...

Been there, done that. Being accepted into the Academy is pretty tough. If your Background Investigator doesn't like something about you, you're done. I speak from experience. Wish you all the best of luck, hope the State has enough money to pay your pension if it doesn't go bankrupt by then.

About CHP making a lot of money, well, California is a very expensive place to live. Everyone, including gas station clerks should be making close to six figures in California. It's hard to own a home or raise a family in CA on much less. This is becoming increasingly true throughout the rest of the country. It's crazy, but those are the times we live in.

@Death4life14 Actually there are only a handful of vehicle code felonies. Traffic stops frequently turn into something much bigger. Homegrown terrorist Timothy McVeigh was caught on a traffic stop. I haven't heard anyone "taking away from what other departments do", but consider this, that Deputy at MCJ can't wait to get out to the street where the action is. Most cops don't want to work the jail, not because it's so dangerous, but because it's so boring.

@chellejeff You need to educate yourself, I've already done that. Yes, traffic is dangerous, but EVERYONE DRIVES! and they don't get paid 100K plus a year. Stats prove that 98% of CHP fatalities area result of traffic collisions. More than 100,000 people a year die in traffic fatalities in this country a year, a liquor store clerk on the midnight shift is 5 times as likely to be killed in the line of duty than one of California's Highest Paid. The stats don't lie, being a CHP is not so dangerous

@neckarsulme I'm quite glad to hear the good folks at the CHP are not in danger. Perhaps you'd like your state patrolled by midnight clerks from the liquor store. I'm sure they would do it for less pay. Personally, I think I'll stick with the highly trained and conversely well paid CHP. It's not that unusual for highly trained individuals to have high paying jobs. Untrained individuals on the other hand frequently have low paying crappy jobs, like midnight clerk. No offense to clerks.

@neckarsulme Dude, time for an education!! Most on duty police officer deaths nation wide are traffic related. So I guess traffic is kinda dangerous. Last year CHP tied with Chicago P.D as the most dangerous law enforcement agency to work for in the country. State Traffic Officer is a title, just like Trooper , or Ranger. CHP is the police for the State of California, with jurisdiction throughout the state, and into neighboring states. The CHP frequently leads the state in felony arrests.

@erik57guzman So true....CHP job bulletin states they are STATE TRAFFIC OFFICERS, they are revenue generating ticket issuers for the state. Their job is not that dangerous, you are far more likely to be injured or killed working in a liquor store, the stats prove it. Most CHP are killed in traffic accidents, which can happen to anybody, more than 100,000 in the U.S. alone(civilians). They like to keep that myth alive so no one will mess with their 100K plus salaries.

Yeah felony arrests very from multiple vehicle code violations. Let's see how many rapists, gangsters, and murders they put away compared to other agencies. They're department covers the WHOLE state where other departments have a small city or county. Yes CHP has a dangerous, but you can't take away from what other departments do. Tell the Deputy who works at MCJ with 100+ gangsters in his dorm alone that his job is not as dangerous as a CHP officer.

Yes, almost all their fatalities are traffic related, not fights on the side of the road or shootouts. A clerk on the midnite shift at 7-11 is much more likely to be killed in the line of duty than a CHP, The statistics prove that time and time again. The reason CHP wants to keep that danger myth alive is to justify 6 figure salaries for patrol.

Rookies are generally disciplined but tend to lose it as the longer they are away from the academy. Do you notice that cops who act like jerks and harrass people are usually overweight middle aged guys while cops who are recognized for doing good deeds are usually rookies fresh out of the academy (or at least look like it due to their young appearance)?
