"I will search the world, I will face it's harms" - that lyric destroys me! Beautiful.

This song seems to encapsulate masculinity today. So many men dieing for purpose, responsibility, wanting nothing more for the opportunity to go the distance. Yet society seems to hate them, or worse, seeks to corrupt them.... I dare say that this is the modern American Mans American Dream, and it seems like half the country thinks its a weird dream, which is so sad. edit: I think its the most masculine dream of all time to be a hero for their community, someone who raises the community up, and I think our society looks down on this as arrogant and egotistical. so sad.

I have often dreamed of a far off place Where a hero's welcome would be waiting for me Where the crowds would cheer, when they see my face And a voice keeps saying this is where I'm meant to be I'll be there someday, I can go the distance I will find my way if I can be strong I know every mile would be worth my while When I go the distance, I'll be right where I belong Down an unknown road to embrace my fate Though that road may wander, it will lead me to you And a thousand years would be worth the wait It might take a lifetime but somehow I'll see it through And I won't look back, I can go the distance And I'll stay on track, no I won't accept defeat It's an uphill slope But I won't loose hope, 'till I go the distance And my journey is complete, oh yeah But to look beyond the glory is the hardest part For a hero's strength is measured by his heart, oh Like a shooting star, I will go the distance I will search the world, I will face its harms I don't care how far, I can go the distance 'Till I find my hero's welcome waiting in your arms I will search the world, I will face its harms 'Till I find my hero's welcome waiting in your arms

Powerful stuff indeed. The whole movie had a "gospel" theme to it, gospel being a Greek word. However this song can be said to be a Christian anthem, for the rewards are in the next world. Paul's metaphor of the marathon with a crown intended for those who can persist.

I wish I had played this song for my dad during his funeral. He was a great man. He played such an important role in his community, in his family, in my life. On his death bed when I visited him at the hospital. I asked him how he was and he said I'm up there with the best. I'm literally sitting alone in the dark crying. Missing him.
