I find this so incredibly entertaining. With other Geoguessr players, they might be like "Okay, Tohoku electric company plates are short but rectangular, and the traffic lights are vertical, so it must be somewhere on the Sea of Japan coast of Tohoku. I see some red stickers on that white pole. Akita it is " While with Chris, he's just like, "oh right, I filmed a documentary about that earthquake there."

I'm a japanese born in the US and could name most of these locations. u have to rmbr that japan as a whole is smaller than the state of california. also, all of these places are landmarks. so it's like someone in california pointing out where the hollywood sign and golden gate bridge is yk?

The more fun version of this is trying to guess normal, generic streets, like the kind you see at 7:00-the type that’s all over Japan. I’ve been out of Japan for a few years now, but I still manage to get it right every time a 90-year-old obaachan or ojiisan gets into an accident that makes the news. There are so many clues from the development of the area. The amount of rust on pedestrian overpasses (or any steel infrastructure) often indicates how “rural” the area is. You drive down a road once, and you can immediately get a sense of its personality.
