Punch Brothers were complete once they brought Paul in. They are all virtuosos of their instruments.

Their voices blend really well together! Also, that's probably the first time I've ever clearly heard Paul sing. He's not bad! Both of them are amazing players, too!

He does a fair number of harmonies in Punch Brothers, though he's definitely fourth in line (with Noam being fifth, bringing in the low end when they need it). This Girl, Magnet, Familiarity, It's All Part of the Plan, New York City, and their cover of Surf's Up are just a few songs off the top of my head where Paul sings back-up.

I learned about Chris' Punch Brothers connection backwards -- I first became aware of him when I saw him in a duo concert with Julian Lage; I've seen them twice now. Chris is an amazing player and singer. This type of music isn't normally my thing, but great playing and sincerity can win you over.

He also feels evidently awkward with the short scale, low action, obtrusive frets and squeaky roundwound string of that bass guitar.

For sure bass guitar isn't his forte, but he did go to Curtis so he can for sure hold his own. Probably one of the few guys who's played an Edgar Meyer concerto and held his own with it.

So very, very good. In case anybody cares, the verse they left off ... "He comes from a real old time way of life/He had to fight just to learn how/He might even have voted for Nixon once/But I'm sure he sees that now/Friday night he makes the best damn gumbo you'd ever want to eat/Saturday morning before everyone's up/He's gone off down to the fleet"

He's a upright bassist and one of the best there is -- and that bass doesn't intonate correctly up high on the neck. Had it been fretless, Paul would have made it sound flawless. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWOXl397jsaYe80
