Personally, I really dislike the binary nature of the debate: ICE v electric. Surely there is scope for both? Taking a simple analogy, we don't couch the debate as car v horse (at least, now), we use the car for the commute, and ride a horse for fun and enjoyment. Personally, I see something similar being the case with the electric v ICE issue. The electric vehicle is ideally suited to the daily commute (I commute 110 miles, round trip each day, and my current electric car handles this without any issue). They're comfortable, very easy to live with, cheap to run, better for the environment (they really are), and (incredibly) you can buy electricity whist out and about (with each generation of electric car accepting this at increasingly far rates). Whereas, in my opinion (pretty much evidenced from watching this video), the ICE vehicle is the perfect weekend/fun car. Earlier in the year I ordered a Mustang Mach E (one day I'm sure it'll arrive), which will be perfect for the daily commute. However, I'd still absolutely love a traditional coupé style Mustang Mach 1 for the weekend (thankfully, my wife doesn't fit the standard gendered cliché, so there is hope...). There should be room in the world for both, as both have their positives (albeit in different circumstances). Absolutely nothing wrong with being a "petrol head". But perhaps we should see that appreciation in a wider context. We need to understand that we should try and amend our approach so that is possible to be a petrol head, yet also act in a way that mitigates the impact of the daily commute, which is dull and boring, irrespective of the car that you drive. Returning to the simple analogy, I imagine most jockeys drive a car to the stables.

Now that they have done the work on design and development, maybe they should consider a separate model, same body, for this EV and plant a V6 500hp twin-turbo engine in it. That way, those of us who admire the design but are wary of EV's and the almost total lack of infrastructure could have one while waiting for battery technology and therefore range to improve.
@felixdiaz8933 жыл бұрын
@@lefuedebout current range is pathetic on most of these EVs.
@cypog84793 жыл бұрын
@@felixdiaz893 Actually it's not, most EVs have a decent range. Anyway the range argument is rather irrelevant as most of the car drives are under 100km. And how long do you drive without a stop anyway? You should have a break every two hours or at least every three hours. Modern EVs with fast charging can charge up to 80% in under 20 minutes. But I guess you're mostly doing long trips and pissing in a bucket to save time, right? ;)
@jobicek3 жыл бұрын
@@cypog8479 Well, it depends on how fast you're driving and where you're driving. I have refuelled conventional cars about every two hours before. Stopping for 10 minutes every two hours isn't really a problem (although I know people who will blast for 4+ hours - usually, they do long distances a lot and have no patience). If you're just munching kilometres on highways, it's doable. It's really not the car that worries me. Although range at higher speeds isn't briliant at all. That's laws of physics. Consumption at 200 km/h is just a lot higher, it can't be any other way. And using 350 kW Ionity chargers, Audi quotes 23 minutes to 80 %. Slower than I would like but doable - I don't drive long distances that often. No, the biggest worry for me in general is the infrastructure. On one hand, I shouldn't have too much charge left. But on the other hand, a charger can be out of order or they can be all occupied. And they are so far apart that leaving a reserve to reach the next charger is significant (even regular fuel stations can be quite apart on a highway). But that's still the good scenario - a highway. It gets really bad if you just want to enjoy a car on some backroads. I have crossed Europe like that. That's why you buy a fun car. If I've got the time, I will go have some fun, explore new roads. You're not going to find a 350 kW charger in some village in the middle of nowhere. Or even a small town. Currently, you won't find them in many big cities. They belong on highways. Even with a conventional car, refuelling in boondocks can entail some planning and searching. But they have enough range for me to have fun and then tuck my tail and go look for a station. This usage pattern is very different from what sensible people do. You stick fast chargers on highways, destination chargers to hotels, resorts and shops and wall boxes to homes and residential areas and ordinary people will be happy. But it doesn't cater to enthusiasts who avoid highways because they are plain boring. I really wouldn't fancy driving from Vienna to Nice on backroads in an EV. In a Cayman GT4? Yes, please. And I can't imagine it will change anytime soon. Simply because you need those fast chargers in completely different places than most people.

The modern electric car is revolutionary. I myself have a Polestar 2 and love how fast, quiet, comfortable, safe and cheap to run it is. And even then there is something missing. This is a pivotal moment in time that is going to give us, in most measurable ways, better cars... yet it makes me sad. Growing up in the 90s and seeing (and later driving) all the 80s and early 90s cars, the way they felt, drove, made noise... Nothing replaces that. The noise, the way it builds power, the turbo lag, the flutter, the noise of high-rev N/A... Not even new performance cars feel that way - drove the seemingly (according to reviews) GR Yaris and it felt... fine. Afterwards was given a ride in an old WRX STI that was slower and it was much more fun. Keep your old cars, at least one. Keep your 90s Civics, BMWs, Audis, Alfas, Toyotas, whatever else you like - there is nothing coming that will beat the way they feel.
