Ch Vo Well I think he means it’s not sensible due to the fact that as an everyday mode of transportation it’s ridiculously expensive to own and run compared to something like a VW Golf which for the everyday person is much car as they will ever need. But the RS6 is sensible in comparison to a DBX because it can carry as many people and all their shit, go as many places and look better doing it, and be just as comfortable for less than the DBX. So if you’re a millionaire, buy a fast estate. So if you’re not a millionaire buy a Golf.

@sterlingsilver3205 жыл бұрын
tommihommi1 You’re right that in the grand scheme of the motoring world, an RS6 will never be sensible. But there will always be people willing to spend ridiculous sums of money on cars. The current slew of luxury SUV’s is a good example. Cullinan, Levante, Bentayga, DBX, Cayenne Coupe, all of them. And while we may not like it, there is a (huge) market for cars like that. And in a market there will always be comparisons in relative terms amongst products in that market. And for people shopping in that market of fast, comfortable, expensive SUV’s, the RS6 is the “sensible” choice

I think the thing that Chris misses is that people like the softly sprung nature of SUVs. Cars on average around the 2000s all started chasing the vague concept of being "sporty." And being sporty translated to 2 things on average to OEMs: 1) twitchy steering, and 2)over sprung, over dampened suspension, for reasons I think are all marketing. Car reviewers equated body roll and supple rides with being lazy and resulted in lower review marks. Now, while that was happening, particularly in the US, road conditions began to deteriorate and not be properly repaired. I think it should also be said that with the advent of smartphones, distracted driving is at an all time high. I think we've reached a sort of dark age when it comes to driver awareness. SUVs almost by accident grabbed marketshare by bucking these trends by being closer to what the average consumer actually uses their vehicles for. They dodged the whole "sporty" marketing gimmicks, so they remained soft and pliable on the road. They were comfortable! They also have lots of room for hauling people and stuff, and they have liftbacks, which too many Americans avoided cars with liftbacks so their usefulness was a revelation. Finally, if you talk to the average SUV driver, I think you'll find that they think they are safer being higher up in an SUV. And statistically, it is slightly true. Bigger, heavier vehicles tend to protect their passengers marginally better. So now it's a positive feedback loop: there are more SUVs on the road, so now you feel unsafe in your car. So now you want an SUV so you can feel safer around all the other SUVs. So, I think the combination of softer rides in a time where roads deteriorated, tons of usable, practical space, and a feeling of safety during the driver awareness dark age have all combined to create the SUV apocalypse we're currently living in.

Gotta love the smug, superior tone of those ripping on SUVs and crossovers. Some people actually have 4-6 kids and need a vehicle with three rows of seating to be able to go somewhere as a family and not take two cars. Some people have less kids but they are quite big and need more space than typical for smaller Europeans. In the US we generally do not get our food daily, we get it weekly or biweekly. We have big refrigerators in big houses. We generally have ample parking at home and at the market. The capacity to haul all that stuff is important. Don't know what Chris Harris' family contains but he assumes that we all have the same conditions as him. He also seems to think that everybody can afford expensive vehicles like the RS6. They can't but they can afford a spacious, cheaper crossover with all the new tech. Sure, it'll have cheap plastics, terrible steering and a flinty ride. That's how most inexpensive cars have always been. I drive a crossover and it outperforms the last two sedans I have had by a wide margin. It's not a sports car. It is great in snow and rain and does okay in fields and rutted lanes. It is very quick for the type of vehicle it is and it is perfect for my needs. Those crapping all over these vehicles are those that go along with the crowd and rip on things just because they note that many others are doing so. Generally like Harris' videos and he's a fantastic vehicle reviewer. Comes off as an arrogant elitist here, I'm afraid.

Think the DBX is gorgeous and wish I could drive one. Most people that will buy this vehicle (and put maybe 5000 miles a year on it) have three cars and don't want an RS5, as nice as we might think that is. SUV's haven't done so bad by Porsche. Hopefully this does for Aston what the Cayenne and it's more popular little sibling the Macan did for Porsche. All they have to do is sell 6000 of them or so and it will allow them to keep building real beauties like the Superleggera. This has a place in SUV land at the top of the "sports- luxury" SUV heap. The point is, it's for the guy/woman with real money who doesn't want a bloated Bentayga, but also doesn't want the in your face of a Lambo. It's a winner in my opinion, if you have the money, of course. I'll just have to wait for a perfect three year old one with less than 20K miles on it. There will be many.

As much as I like Chris and his thought processes I think he is missing the reason why this style of car is so popular. Most people who buy new cars (the ones with the money) want ease of entry and exit . Either for them as they get older, or for putting the kids in and out of. Secondly this group also like the feeling of safety sitting higher gives you, be that better vision or just feeling less overpowered in traffic. This is also appreciated by the kids as they get older. An RS6 is only good for a small group who had kids young, and are rich enough and healthy enough, with their kids at late teen stage, to be able to use it.

Chris, get off your "high horse". Just because you don't like SUVs doesn't mean they're "bad". Lots and lots of people love them, as evidenced by how many are on the road. I applaud people who buy what they like instead of what someone tells them they should.

Nice conversation and fair point, although I think we will see more SUVs in the future since the concept lends himself well to electrification due to the sandwich construction in the floor to accommodate the batteries and therefore a higher ride height.

I have hated SUVs ever since the early 2000's and I tell people if you want a serious off-road vehicle buy yourself a Jeep a 4 Runner or a Mercedes G-wagen if you can afford it. I still drive a wagon yes it's an older BMW E61 Touring not an F11 or G31 because BMW will not import the newer larger wagons to the States anymore so let's hope the SUV craze is finally over!
@nik7bkh9655 жыл бұрын
Most SUVs look way better than a regular BMW wagon
@nik7bkh9655 жыл бұрын
@UCUeB697eepJ5esW1kwwnKQA no, you are just triggered. A sedan will always look better than a wagon while a SUV is something special. A wagon is just a Car, that really wants to look as elegant as a sedan, but fails to do that because it also wants to give as much space as a SUV for example.

In Japan and Hong Kong (where I reside) the MPV is king. Alphard, Vellfire, errr and the rest. They’re no Espaces, but surely they make more sense than these SUVs. That’s enough energy expended on the subject.
@stevieg24835 жыл бұрын
yes exactly. Mostly illegally parked by the chauffeurs in Central ;o) The Toyota Estima is the 'family' version and the Alphard / Vellfire is the businessmans car of choice.

Can I join the rant? I have been so needing to hear this from a voice I respect! I was beginning to think it was just me, so thank you Chris! I’m sick to the back teeth of all these pretend SUVs on uk roads And is it a coincidence that you rarely see any of them being driven well?. I’ve nothing against a proper SUV that people buy because they need one or just because they like it; it’s all the bullshit pretend SUVs that annoy the shit out of me. And have you noticed in the TV adverts, they are always driven by a man with an overly bushy beard, for some bizarre marketing reason. The Mocha Antara Crapture Craptus et al. I mean seriously you have a DS3 which is a nice tidy hatchback and then ruin it by jacking it up and stick plastic doormats on the outside and call it a Craptus - sorry i Cactus- And people actually buy it! Don’t get me started on the Nissan Puke! Somebody just please tell me, when will it end! Okay okay I do know there is a need, for people with mobility issues, it does suit them to have a higher riding platform for ease of access, I can accept that, but it seems that most people get one, just because the hairdresser next door has one and it’s so much better sitting 9 inches higher isn’t it, to drop the little darlings off! Somebody please make it all stop Take Chris’s advice, just buy a nice normal spacious bloody estate car for the love of God! I got a bit little bit carried away there. You can come out now, I’ve finished.

I 100% agree with you on this, my Mum has a Velar and honestly of all the people I know, her and one other person should have an SUV of some variety, everyone else I know shouldn't. As Chris said so many cars are just people jumping on the band wagon of "hey look! There's lots of money in SUVs!" and they just keep making awful vehicles that only sell because they're crossovers or SUVs. Another friend I have hated cars at the time (she had whatever the crossover C3 like thing is called and it was given to her as a birthday present) she had a go in a friend's S4 estate and loved it and came to the realisation that it wasn't cars in general, just the awful crossovers and SUVs being pumped out to make as much money as possible, she changed to a Ford Focus ST recently and is absolutely loving the car
