One of the most important, and unfortunately too rarely practiced, forms of attention is that upon one's own thoughts, mental processes and internal motivations.

I am proud of the fact that I have never been on social media. I don't even have a TV because I got sick of commercials every 10 minutes. All of us are distracted from realities even in our own communities. One thing I like about myself is that I am able to empathize with people with whom I may disagree. As an American I don't see reasons to denigrate people no matter who they are. I see immigrants as our future and welcome them. With Trump's deportation plans we are going to suffer. Sticking them in Guantanamo Bay is the worst thing I've ever heard. Just wait until a cucumber costs $5. Or the price of eggs skyrockets. Too many are unaware of the bird flu epidemic. Will we willingly make ourselves sick from processed so-called foods? Chris Hayes is the light in this this drab and scary world.

I'm similar to you, I'm on FB but I only go there once a month for few minutes to check up on my family and friends. I rarely use my cell phone. I use the Firefox browser which blocks all the ads on the internet. (So like youtube for example, I never see ads). Chris makes a good point that real focus is our attention and that's what they're competing for. To me it was so obvious that trump will say anything stupid just to keep the focus on him and not on actual problems. ("They're eating the cats and dogs.") Used to be that people had common sense now they've given that up to play the attention game. I see so many on their phones texting because a smaller version it gets them attention.

I don't love podcasts. And that's not the only point this podcast that made did I take issue with. I think the competition among podcast and social media influencers has fostered a social environment where a truth has nothing to do with what the dispensers of information are after. The one point that this podcaster did make was where referencing PT Barnum... People don't care they think you're being honest they only care if you're being entertaining. Ask for Trump and even Musk - they were birthed as much by those who are their dissenters as by those who are there supporters. People glom onto Trump and Musk as much because of their narrative which is different than those who seem to evoke the same rhetoric, against the backdrop of a climate where far right conservatives are becoming increasingly more attuned to their alarm at the shifting of the demographic climate in this country. Trump has Obama to thank as much as he has his base for why he won in 2016. And Musk is the Uber Paramount of tech bro confronting "wokeism" the latter that advocates diversity and inclusion.

Who and what would be posted on KZbin if there was no revenue for the creators, and there was no advertising the financial incentive to steal our attention would be gone, and the quality would not be so desperately seeking money which leads us to rage lies and conspiracy which makes the most money and destroys the fabric of our society, turning people against each other with no common belief system or sense of people working together for the great Good

01:00 this week and And learn what we can about it. Today also happens to be a special day in the Christian church. Anybody know what that is? It's a day of Pentecost. And what happened on Pentecostal day? First Pentecost. When was it to start with? What's the, where's the Pentecost come from? I can't hear you. I'm sorry. they were having a festival to celebrate and anyway, on that day the God's presence came and penetrated the hearts of those assembled there. And that was the first time. So, the first time for, and that's when we assumed that was the birth of the Christian church. Jimmy Carter's full Sunday School lesson

Chris was right about it being easy to grab attention, not so easy to hold it. Case in point: YT vids with clickbait titles. I'm just one person, but I've learned to read the titles, take a minute to remember if I've seen something similar (if it's an obnoxious or attention-grabbing title), consider the YT source: one otherwise good channel has a formula of putting up a snappy title and a few minutes into the vid after mentioning the subject of the title saying, "But first we want to tell you..." I end up skipping a lot of those. Good subject, especially for the 21st Century.

Kari came close to winning. Lesson for Democrats: Gallego went to SOCIAL EVENTS preferred by Latinos and brought his son. And talked to people about the their dreams and struggles and lives. NOT POLICY, NOT POLITICS. Good ol retail politics by someone who can walk the walk.

i worry about this too…who is going to write? lyrics for a song, music for the melody, a novel, learning how to ride a Harley Davidson and getting on the road. all of this requires focus and attention, with a deep creative spirit and drive. put away your phones for an hour a day to start. ween yourself off it and focus on a creative project. just a thought❤❤❤❤

Regarding the question of regulating: how about regulating advertising? You have any idea how much better you'd make the world? The number one reason why every browser, every website wants to know your location (and does know, whether you're good with that or not) is for the purpose of advertisement, and it has become the most normal thing for us. The financing of websites and content, most will need advertisers for that. After the first, short period of its existence, the internet has been crammed with ads worse than what you see before entering a city, a promise blanketed by ads. Speaking of attention, and they're produced in a manner where we don't have much choice about whether it gets our attention, safe turning off our device (before looking up and seeing... what?) Everything has become about advertisement, is being interrupted by advertisement, is dependent on advertisement. And we're all fine with that? Advertisement companies are getting and selling our data, and we're fine with that? It's gone all wrong because of advertisement. And it's gone totally overboard. How about putting the brakes on it? It would sure allow us just a little more attention. And how about *not* making your living by creating *some* content for the sole purpose of getting paid for the ad space? Because there are such channels, too.

In the 1960's, the novel "Walden Two" came along, promoting B.F. Skinner's perfectly sound and rather scary ideas out there -- a rather eerie piece of academic propagandizing. Undergraduates here and there took the principle to heart and Skinnerized their instructors in class, in some case reducing them to gibbering wrecks simply by smiling in unison whenever the victim moved an arm in a slightly ungainly way. A few hundred wicked open-conspirators today could no doubt produce a generation of goose-stepping Elon Musks, on screens across the Internet, through selective over-use of the thumbs-up clicker. Not that I would suggest such a thing, of course...
