Chris Killip - Putting in the time

THIS VIDEO: He spent a lot of time with people and communities and would return again and again. His best known work was a book called- In flagrante. The work was made against a backdrop of mass unemployment, violent strikes, and punitive cutbacks to the country’s social welfare programs. His photographs emphasises the human element of economic deprivation, as well as the resilience of the communities that were directly affected by the de-industrialisation of England.
ABOUT ME: The conversations focus on topics related to different aspects of photography including: art, documentary and photojournalism. The discussions explore the personal experiences of photographers and artists and how their work reflects both their internal and external landscape. During the past 30 years I have photographed in over 50 countries for magazines including National Geographic, Time, New York Times and Newsweek. I have held solo exhibitions in New York, London and Paris and my work is showcased in private and institutional art collections around the world.

So glad you covered CK - insightful as ever. A fantastic photographer whose work I knew in fragments, but never knew it as from the same man. His coverage of England's NE and Newcastle (where I live - how times have changed...) is so evocative of a world I can just remember. His photographs say so much, but never shout, very Walker Evans.

Forty years ago, I came across Chris Killips photograph "Father and son watching a parade", and was immediately struck. This English picture perfectly depicted the lower working class people I worked with in Holland. IMHO Chris Killip has been an extremely undervalued photographer. His work has more human depth than many of the big names. I consider him one of the biggest photographers of the history of photography. It has been very hard to find more of his work. I've in fact been waiting for this retrospective for almost four decades.

I love Chris Killip's work. Pity I can't get down to Gateshead. His photographs are, and I rarely use this work regarding photography, beautiful. I see a lot of shots and exhibitions that portray working class people as just miserable and dejected, its a photographic trope these days; but they miss the essential 'metaphor' of the underlying dignity and resilience of ignored underclasses around the world. I'm not trying to romanticise poverty, its has a de-humanising effect when history is 'done to you', but Killip's work reaches in beyond that, to the humanity.

A wonderful body of work. I remember some difficulty he had returning to those areas due to being misquoted or having a quote erroneously attributed to him in a newspaper. It must've troubled him greatly.

Wonderful work! Perhaps you are familiar with the 1996 film, "Brassed Off," which dealt with the closing of the coal pits. The town had a brass band which was as old as the mines. The unraveling of the community and families is painfully evident. However, the annual competition for the brass bands holds things together in the midst of collapse. There is also the theme of the outsider. Can she be trusted or is she working for the owners? Killip's work captures the ugly truth of progress. Soomeone loses and suffers on behalf of the rest. All benefits owe a debt to someone.
