I've seen this comment made by a number of tech KZbinrs. But they're not artists and don't do any drawing on iPads. They simply scribbled a bit with the Apple Pencil Pro and declared that it feels exactly the same... 🤷🏻‍♀ I too thought it'd be a little odd that there'd be absolutely no difference, so I decided to watch reviews by actual artists like Chris, and they've been so informative.

I don’t understand how they could logically come to that conclusion. Why did they think it even existed? It wasn’t to make a matte screen, it was purely to make a better drawing texture 💀

I went to the Apple store and they let me draw stuff in Procreate for 30 minutes to get a feel for it. Bought it right after because it is truly awesome. I have used Paperlike for years and love it (except for the easy scratches) and yeah it has more of a paper texture, but this nano texture is impossible to describe unless you try it yourself. It feels creamy when you draw on it. Doesn't feel like the glossy screen at all.

Great job. As a digital artist I compared nano-texture, normal one and my M1 iPad with paper-like film in Apple Store. Nano-texture was incredible. Very smooth. No more diffusing reflection like paper-like. Best drawing experience I've felt. And OLED still looks very black. I reserved nano-texture one just after that. It costs very high(especially in Japan) but if you earn more with it you would be fine. I will never buy normal one and paper-like films in the future.

@@chris-piascik Yes! thank you. that is probably the main concern over choosing nano texture or not, because if you choose with it you will want to go without screen protectors. The paperlike feel of matte screen protectors is a good thing for drawing experience but people really use them to protect the screen... I would use any protector even without texture just to save the lifespan of the ipad screen.

I went in and sat with the new nanotexture, and although it's subtle, it is indeed silky smooth, not sticky smooth. I kept trying the two glass types side by side, both at the same time, and swapping.. and although it was difficult to describe, I soon began to really dislike the standard glass. Like Chris points out, the inconsistent drag of the bare glass when you get oil on it or stuff was a royal pain. Nothing like that on the nanotexture. It even picked up fingerprints less. Although hypothetically you'd think the texture would throw that light into the glass and cause hazing, it wasn't that noticeable, and when you account for all the glare and harsh reflections that I've learned to ignore.. the textured screen was actually clearer and easier to see. While my brain tries to filter it out, it can't remove the issue. So the lack of reflections just made the display pop better. So, despite the fact that I really didn't want the 1TB, I knew I would regret not getting the nanotexture. So I'm returning my standard glass iPad and ordered a nanotexture. Also, not for the person reading this, but for those who might need to hear this.. don't make claims unless you can actually back them up with unequivocal, replicatible facts. A differing opinion doesn't make others wrong. And you thinking something is true does not make it true. Assume others might know what they're talking about and check yourself before you go insulting people. I know this won't make a difference, but sometimes I feel it needs to be said.

I went to an Apple Store and brought my iPad with a screen protector. Tried out the nano and non-nano and my iPad with the screen protector. In the end I found that I didn’t like the nano as much as the feel of a screen protector. If you have an Apple Store near you I recommend trying the nano out. There’s less of a feel difference between the nano and the glossy glass than I anticipated. Ultimately it’s going to come down to your preference, which I believe is going to take trying out the options before you really know what you want.

I also cannot stand to touch the glass, thought I was alone in that! Does amount of pressure affect how much the Apple Pencil interacts with smudges on the bare glass? I find if I press hard I feel that, but a lighter touch glides like butter no matter how dirty my screen is. I’m still on a 2020 Pro and plan to watch how the nano texture plays out long term. No. The texture isn't fragile, but it will scratch if you take a knife to it. JerryRigEverything tests the hardness to be 3-4 on the Mohs scale, the flat tempered glass is more like 6. Iron is 4, steel 5-6.

Although I can’t tell you for sure, I can make a solid guess based on countless hours drawing on iPads with nearly every variety of screen protector. I’ve likely gone through hundreds of pencil tips over the years. The nano texture will definitely not wear tips down as fast as a paper like or paper feel. In fact, in the amount of time I’ve been drawing on this iPad I would be able to see wear on my tip if I were using a screen protector, and there isn’t any.

Honestly I don’t do more than doodles in procreate but just hearing that the “stickiness” of the glossy is removed by the nano texture glass makes me VERY interested in it. The glossy glass grosses me out too and has literally made me reach for my iPhone at times because I didn’t want to swipe all over that slightly tacky flat smooth glass. I’ve used Paperlikes (and the like) but I hated how much it destroyed the image quality so I wound up removing it. What’s the point of having that great screen if a screen protector destroys it? That’s always been my biggest caveat with them.

I have the 1TB 2018 12.9 iPad Pro and the 4GB of RAM is painful for my work in drawing and 3D, the 16GB of RAM for the M4 iPad is going to be an amazing upgrade, this review is perfect and answers all of my concerns I use PaperLike on my 2018 and I can’t function without it and needed to know if the nano texture was durable enough and similar to the screen protectors, it seems like the nano texture is closer to a worn out protector with less tooth but not in a bad sense as it won’t have the terrible gashes they inevitably end up with, and at $100 upgrade vs the several hundreds of dollars I’ve spent since 2018 on PaperLikes the choice is now solidified!

Question: is there any difference or changes in cleaning the nano texture display compared to the normal one? I really hate finger prints on my iPad and typically clean it every day with Zeiss lens cleaning wipes.
@chris-piascik
@chris-piascik 8 ай бұрын
They give you a special cloth and say that you can use 70% isopropyl alcohol on occasion. That said, I find the matte screen to be much less of a finger print magnet, and they easily wipe right off.

I was thinking of one thing. When you compared the friction on the screen on your iPad pro m1 and your pro m4 nano texture. Its not just the screen you are comparing there. Its also Apple Pencil 2 vs Apple pencil pro. The pro has haptic function on the end that gives a feeling of more friction and more control to make it feel more like drawing on a paper. So for a fair comparison you need to compare with the same pencil.

That haptic stuff has not been incorporated into any of the drawing apps I use yet. Likely won’t be coming until June.

Did a quick scan back thru previous videos and didn’t see an explicit mention: What’s the half-glove thing you’re wearing? Was it designed that way, or did you chop/repurpose a full-glove to wear?

You’ve convinced me to return mine and get the nano-textured one. I got the nano one at first, but since its deliver was scheduled in mid June I figured I’d get the regular one and try it out first. I hate drawing on the regular screen as well and am not a fan of screen protectors in general. Very excited to get the nano-textured one after your description.

@chris-piascik I got my nano textured iPad after returning my old one and I just want to say thanks. I’m so glad you convinced me. Painting outdoors is a dream, and the difference between the glossy glass is negligible, if I can even notice it at all. Appreciate your candidness with this

Thanks for the nice and informative video! A couple of comments: I do think that the feeling of the Wacom Cintiq + Wacom Pen with standard nib is noticeably different from the nanotexture iPad + Pro Pencil with standard nib. Regarding the possibile screen protector usage, I think that long term usage may compromise the nanotexture, glue of the screen protector may ruin it, but testing would be needed, so I would not recommend installing a screen protector on the nanotexture.

Thanks for thoroughly reviewing the new iPad Pro and its nano feature. I’m buying an iPad Pro with nano texture for the first time to experience something new with the latest specs. I have a background in Persian calligraphy, a delicate art. I want to use the new iPad Pro and the Pencil Pro for this purpose. Do you have any recommendations for a specific type of app for this kind of art? I appreciate your time.

One question I have is: does ram help with layers when drawing? Nano texture glass aside, would it be worth it to go with the 1tb 16gb of ram option solely for the ram?

I think it’s overkill. I never ran into layer limitations on my M1 iPad Pro with 256gb of storage and however much memory those came with.

I went to buy the new IPad M4 and I had enough budgeted for it, but I tried it at the store and it was your typical awesome drawing experience but was it worth the 2300? I ended buying and M2 Mac Mini Pro and an M2, 1T 12.9 iPad Pro. I still paid less than what I would have paid for one iPadM4. I just can’t resist a bargain 😊 so I will probably get this iPad when the next greatest iPad comes out … the M5.

I didn’t read or look through all the comments, but what I want to know is that can you have a screen protector on the nano texture or have a case that covers the whole body with a built in screen protector ???
@chris-piascik
@chris-piascik 8 ай бұрын
I talk about that (and show it) in the video. You CAN definitely use a screen protector on the nano, but it’s not worth getting it if you’re going to cover it up.

@@chris-piascik ok well i guess i’ll stay with the 512 cell but hopefully theirs a screen cover or protector that will be made for it specifically that will not degrade the screen quality of that feature. knowing apple that nanotexture screen will come to all iPad pros at some point within two or three years. Hopefully by then there a solution.
@melgross
@melgross 8 ай бұрын
@@deonte19882by their very nature matte screens degrade the display quality. The nano screens are new technology. This is an improved version of Apple’s first version. The technology was invented by Canon a while ago for their lenses. Then Nikon adapted it and likely Sony as well. Apple developed this for screens instead of lenses. No protector can, because they’re just etched plastic, equal the nano screen. That’s just the way it is.
