I've seen this comment made by a number of tech KZbinrs. But they're not artists and don't do any drawing on iPads. They simply scribbled a bit with the Apple Pencil Pro and declared that it feels exactly the same... 🤷🏻♀ I too thought it'd be a little odd that there'd be absolutely no difference, so I decided to watch reviews by actual artists like Chris, and they've been so informative.
@razrv3lc6 ай бұрын
I don’t understand how they could logically come to that conclusion. Why did they think it even existed? It wasn’t to make a matte screen, it was purely to make a better drawing texture 💀

Great job. As a digital artist I compared nano-texture, normal one and my M1 iPad with paper-like film in Apple Store. Nano-texture was incredible. Very smooth. No more diffusing reflection like paper-like. Best drawing experience I've felt. And OLED still looks very black. I reserved nano-texture one just after that. It costs very high(especially in Japan) but if you earn more with it you would be fine. I will never buy normal one and paper-like films in the future.

I went to the Apple store and they let me draw stuff in Procreate for 30 minutes to get a feel for it. Bought it right after because it is truly awesome. I have used Paperlike for years and love it (except for the easy scratches) and yeah it has more of a paper texture, but this nano texture is impossible to describe unless you try it yourself. It feels creamy when you draw on it. Doesn't feel like the glossy screen at all.

@@chris-piascik Yes! thank you. that is probably the main concern over choosing nano texture or not, because if you choose with it you will want to go without screen protectors. I went in and sat with the new nanotexture, and although it's subtle, it is indeed silky smooth, not sticky smooth. I kept trying the two glass types side by side, both at the same time, and swapping.. and although it was difficult to describe, I soon began to really dislike the standard glass. Like Chris points out, the inconsistent drag of the bare glass when you get oil on it or stuff was a royal pain. Nothing like that on the nanotexture. It even picked up fingerprints less. Although hypothetically you'd think the texture would throw that light into the glass and cause hazing, it wasn't that noticeable, and when you account for all the glare and harsh reflections that I've learned to ignore.. the textured screen was actually clearer and easier to see. While my brain tries to filter it out, it can't remove the issue. So the lack of reflections just made the display pop better. So, despite the fact that I really didn't want the 1TB, I knew I would regret not getting the nanotexture. So I'm returning my standard glass iPad and ordered a nanotexture. Also, not for the person reading this, but for those who might need to hear this.. don't make claims unless you can actually back them up with unequivocal, replicatible facts. A differing opinion doesn't make others wrong. And you thinking something is true does not make it true. Assume others might know what they're talking about and check yourself before you go insulting people. I know this won't make a difference, but sometimes I feel it needs to be said.

I went to an Apple Store and brought my iPad with a screen protector. Tried out the nano and non-nano and my iPad with the screen protector. In the end I found that I didn’t like the nano as much as the feel of a screen protector. If you have an Apple Store near you I recommend trying the nano out. There’s less of a feel difference between the nano and the glossy glass than I anticipated. Ultimately it’s going to come down to your preference, which I believe is going to take trying out the options before you really know what you want.

No. The texture isn't fragile, but it will scratch if you take a knife to it. JerryRigEverything tests the hardness to be 3-4 on the Mohs scale, the flat tempered glass is more like 6. Iron is 4, steel 5-6.

I wanted to get the Nano texture version, but I opted to get the base model instead. I didn't realize I'd be spending that much and right now for economic reasons, I couldn't really justify spending that much money. I really wish I could have. But I've always wanted something bigger than 13 in just because like I like digital painting and I want the biggest screen possible. 15 to 16 in would have been perfect. If they came out with a size like that. Instead of 13 I would have dropped the money. But for now I'll stick with the base model and if they ever come out with a screen that big I'll just trade it in.

I was thinking of one thing. When you compared the friction on the screen on your iPad pro m1 and your pro m4 nano texture. Its not just the screen you are comparing there. Its also Apple Pencil 2 vs Apple pencil pro. The pro has haptic function on the end that gives a feeling of more friction and more control to make it feel more like drawing on a paper. So for a fair comparison you need to compare with the same pencil.

I also cannot stand to touch the glass, thought I was alone in that! Does amount of pressure affect how much the Apple Pencil interacts with smudges on the bare glass? Just a theory (hypothesis): The "bare" glass might have an "adhesive" effect that the nano texture doesn't have (the surface is broken up). I would think that this gives the bare glass this "sticky" feeling. While I'm not one that "can't stand it", I can relate to the sentiment. And for using the pen (not drawing, but photo editing) I actually *do* prefer having a paper-like screen protector (just from another brand ;-)).

I’m probably gonna wait for the nano texture to be available on more varieties of ipads first, because i’m still having a good time with last gen’s air, and it needing the highest end pros, just doesn’t sit right with me for a must buy yet, especially since i’ll have to buy a new case and pen.

There’s 100% a different experience when drawing on these nano-screens compared to the regular glossy. In my personal experience, glossy is a bit hard to draw on since there’s no resistance when dragging on the screen. I prefer to have some sort of resistance drag when drawing like paper which is also textured like the glass. You sacrifice a bit of contrast and color pop compared to the glassy though so heads up. I definitely notice the color difference between the 2 screens. I also noticed that these screens also capture grease a lot heavier than the glossy as there is texture for it to really stick on, so i find myself cleaning the screen often. Long story short, when you use the nano texture glass there are some drawbacks but there are so many more positives compared to the negatives. Either way both are amazing regardless but the nano is definitely geared toward digital artists 100%.

YES!! The smudges on the bare glass drives me crazy when using the pencil!! Thank you so much, it thought I was alone. Same for hand gestures and overall contact hand to glass. I got the textured glass too and the only little regret is the little screen clarity loss. But damn, I finally don’t have to try a million « paperlike » anymore. And same for the paperlike brand, I got scratches in days or 1-2 weeks. The kind of scratches that damage image quality when using the ipad. Which is a shame. AND the drawing experience (« paper feel ») is downgrade the more the pencil tip get used (because it changes the shape? Idk). The Apple nano text seems to not ware the pencil tip, or at a very very slow pace. Which is really great Thank you again for sharing, sending love

Thanks for the video, appreciate it a lot! I’m thinking about the nano-version for all the reasons you mentioned. I wonder though how the feel is with the PenTips. Never used them, always used a screen protector/ paper like.. but I could imagine it would work. Last question, I run out of layers sometimes, because I often draw on a big canvas. Because of the RAM bump you get more layers, true? Again, thanks!

In my previous video I talk about the PenTips + towards the end. I never had layers limitations on my M1 Pro. I use Fresco though and that app doesn’t limit them. Though I used procreate for a while when I first got it and never had layer issues anyway. Procreate takes into account storage space and memory for sure. The M4 iPad is already and beast and with the 1tb and 2tb versions there’s nothing that procreate could throw at it that it wouldn’t even flinch at.

Thanks for all this @chris. How much have you played around with the Pentips options for nibs? Is there any one you like best on the new glass, and is it something that you think is necessary? Using the old glossy iPad for drawing, and mostly lettering, i found that without a Pentips nib it was so much more slippery and hard to use! Thanks for all you do for the illustrator/lettering community when it comes to this. This thing is expensive, and its great having a super poignant review geared to our types of workflow!

No worries! I like the PenTips+. The ones that up over the tip felt too wide for me. I think it’s pretty good on the Nano Texture as well, it’s just a bit slow for longer lines. So far I’ve been using the Apple tip the most.

I’m curious how this is for simply reading - articles, books etc. any thoughts at all please?

I think it would be great because there’s almost no glare/reflections, and the oled display is so crisp.

Honestly I don’t do more than doodles in procreate but just hearing that the “stickiness” of the glossy is removed by the nano texture glass makes me VERY interested in it. The glossy glass grosses me out too and has literally made me reach for my iPhone at times because I didn’t want to swipe all over that slightly tacky flat smooth glass. I’ve used Paperlikes (and the like) but I hated how much it destroyed the image quality so I wound up removing it. What’s the point of having that great screen if a screen protector destroys it? That’s always been my biggest caveat with them.

Could you put two screen protectors over the nano though? 23:15

I went to buy the new IPad M4 and I had enough budgeted for it, but I tried it at the store and it was your typical awesome drawing experience but was it worth the 2300? I ended buying and M2 Mac Mini Pro and an M2, 1T 12.9 iPad Pro. I still paid less than what I would have paid for one iPadM4. I just can’t resist a bargain 😊 so I will probably get this iPad when the next greatest iPad comes out … the M5.

Thanks! This is the review I needed on this subject.👌 I liked drawing on the Wacom Cintiq, although bit more friction wouldn't hurt, but can't stand drawing on the glossy screen at all. So, any followers that can confirm this nano is completely the same as the Wacom Cintiq screens? Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot for your detailed reviews of the nano texture iPads Chris! It was a no-brainer for me to order one of them too. But sadly I live at the end of the earth so it won’t arrive until mid June 😭 Love your channel and your videos, you made me have another look at Fresco after almost only using Procreate exclusively.

lol the perfectionist in my is crying at all the bubbles. i wont miss that experience if i ever get a matte display ipad
@danacraft-parker1046 ай бұрын
I use so much tape removing single pieces of dust from every formed bubble… it takes me HOURS to apply a matte protector in such a way that it is usable for me. They last a few months (before my primary drawing area becomes worn completely smooth.) And… during that time I am going through nibs. I despise applying the matte protectors… but, don’t like the glass. DEF won’t miss this.

Thanks for the nice and informative video! A couple of comments: I do think that the feeling of the Wacom Cintiq + Wacom Pen with standard nib is noticeably different from the nanotexture iPad + Pro Pencil with standard nib. Regarding the possibile screen protector usage, I think that long term usage may compromise the nanotexture, glue of the screen protector may ruin it, but testing would be needed, so I would not recommend installing a screen protector on the nanotexture.

The screen protectors don’t use any adhesive, at least not the ones I’ve used.

On your note about how you’re not worried about it being delicate because if that was the case then Apple wouldn’t have released it, I don’t know about that. Apple markets it towards people who need to see the screen in bright daylight, but didn’t say anything about drawing on it. I hope you’re right, but I am interested in the long-term durability with this screen and the Apple Pencil. The fact that they unveiled a new pencil and this screen in the same art-focussed keynote but never showed or even mentioned the idea of drawing on the nano texture seems a bit strange to me. If they worked well together, you’d think they’d show it off but they haven’t. For the price point, this is definitely one of those options I’d encourage people to wait on for the long-term reviews from artists like yourself.
@chris-piascik6 ай бұрын
I see your point, but at the same time, the Apple Pencil goes hand in hand with iPad usage. Half the keynote was about the Apple Pencil pro. I think they don’t talk about it that much because it’s a very high level option for a much smaller audience. They also wanted to show the OLED in the best possible “light” and that’s the standard screen.

"not worried about it being delicate because if that was the case then Apple wouldn’t have released it" I remember the "butterfly keyboard" issue on TouchBar MacBook Pros. Apple replaced them for free.

The nano texture was the only thing I really wanted on the new iPad. I hope that they bring it to the pro lines of the MacBook and iPhone as well.

Great video! Did you find the nano-texture compromises the screen quality much?
@chris-piascik6 ай бұрын
Thanks! I talked about that a bunch didn’t I? The screen quality is amazing. Side by side the glossy screen has slightly darker blacks but it’s so minimal and then you have to deal with all the reflections that the nano texture eliminates.

Now I want that nano texture on the iphone 😭. I love that soft touch and know exactly what you mean. But I dislike the sharp edge it adds where the protector ends, so I just coped without it :(
