Every solo of his is like a history lesson in jazz tenor playing. His first few choruses are Dexter Gordon, then Coltrane, then Henderson, then Brecker, then himself. jeez.
@jonathanzhang7627

+Autodidactus Communitati I don't think he's doing it intentionally, and I wouldn't associate Dexter Gordon's solo style with just playing rhythms... CP is a product of his listening and he sounds like himself the whole way through.

Nah there a good number of isms Chris uses that definitely reflect a Dex-like style. Some of his Lestery vibrato to cap off phrases, some his phrases outright. But yes he does absolutely sound like himself the whole way through.

I think it's just how he builds into this solo. The layers and textures build ultimately into a crescendo that is uniquely him. He is a master at his craft and can do absolutely anything.

CP great, as usual. Love his embellishment of the head. But Adam Nussbaum... best I've ever seen him. He was locked in on CP and drove him. Great accents, dynamics, tonal range and textures, the hand playing, his nice drum break and at the end great use of silence. I love it when drummers just dance behind the set - get their whole body moving fluidly, their whole body creating the pulse. Just marvelous. The sound balance was bad but that's just the room and the recording.

The Bassist is Rufus Reed. I agree Chris gives a historical journey in his solo. And when he plays like him, its really amazing saxophone playing.....His sense of time and timing while he is soloing (other than Brecker) is the most incredible I've ever heard..

Man I have never heard a more uneducated comment, I hope this is a joke. The drummer is Adam Nussbaum, one of the best of all time he knows how to be respectful. They were talking about whether to trade or whether to play the shout chorus and take the tune home. You think the bass player, whos another great, Rufus Reid, cares that they're talking down the plan for the tune.
