Exactly! It's a silly trick, but you need someone like Chris to be able to pull it off. He's hysterical and the whole time you think he's messing up, so when he finally picks the right card, that's when everyone is like, "Oh, wow!!!"

This is an incredibly simple trick but what made it work was his performance and the circumstances of him being the one to do it. The moment Graham started saying he could do magic I was like oh cool, he's probably gonna do some mathematical trick or a basic impossible routine or something. The moment he started putting stuff into piles and going through the 'try one, burn one' routine I'd written the whole trick off as a mathematical quirk- in particular the comment about how Will.i.am's 'middle shuffle' might have messed him up convinced me of this. All of these things worked together so that when he slapped the cards and got it right I was like 'wait...what?' and had to go back to figure things out. Just goes to show that a good performance can make even an underwhelming trick really cool to watch.

A little addition that I added is I like to secretly turn the Queen of hearts upside down so that when you slap it it's right side up and it just makes it look like it kind of appeared it gives a really cool effect when you do it

He actually memorized the SECOND from the top, and then shuffled the bottom card on top of the deck to make the second card (Ace of Hearts) in the third position. As a magician myself, it was super fun to watch his process because it's folk magic, not classical magic. Who's ever seen a force like this ever in Erdnase or Royal Road?! So fun to watch, especially J Law's reaction.

Yeah, he really had her going. I was shocked that Will is such a novice about cards.....he literally didn't understand them at all, but was that much more blown away by the trick. Sometimes it's the magician, sometimes it's a great audience.....sometimes it's both.

This is sooo good and well-explained, thanks!! This is the only trick I think I've ever seen explained this well. I have a question, because I want to know if I'm crazy and don't get it or if there's a way around this: If, at the end, you show the 10 of Clubs (which isn't their card) and they happen to remember it for some reason-- and they see you burn it (when you're actually burning the Queen), when you show them the last two cards and say, "Are these your cards?" and one of them is -still- the 10 of Clubs, couldn't they catch you with, "I thought you already put the 10 of Clubs down on the table!" Unless I missed something. I watched this way too many times, well beyond the point of good mental health LOL so I'm likely mixed up.

A great variations I use on this trick which works great, instead of slapping the cards held between the knuckles is to throw the remaining deck onto them as though which when done fast really baffles them as to how their card which they believed was still in the deck is now in their hand

I was so close! I put it 8 from the bottom then did the slidey thing to get it on top of the 4 cards. After showing the bottom card of the 4 cards I simply slid the top card off and continued from there. This one is so much better. Thanks!

He shuffled the cards _after_ looking through the pack for the 3rd card at the start. Now I am confused again lol

From what I can see, every time he shuffles them, he doesn't shuffle the left pack into the top part of the right pack (right pack being the top half of the deck, where the 3rd card is). So he's "shuffling" them, but maintaining the order of the cards at the very top.

also dont forget that at the start he puts the bottom card (4 of spades) on top of the deck, and wow what a miracle the top card after shuffeling is the 4 of spades. And as MirroredReality already has said, maintaining the top 3 cards in place is very easy when doing shuffles as you just make sure to keep them on top when u put the two packs together

Speaking for myself, the card slap at the end didn't always work. I found that unless I slide the bottom card (the spectators chosen card) out slightly and towards the spectator (in this case my other hand) so that it becomes the most gripped card of the 4 it doesn't work when I slap the card and often 2 cards remain in the other hand. So then I figured I must not be slapping them hard enough but when I try harder I end up slapping all 4 out of my opposite hand! It could be that I am slapping them at an odd angle given that I was just practicing with myself but ideally you want to practice on yourself first before performing the trick for others so I hope this is the case!

You could also have them place the card on top, do a double undercut to get it to the bottom, then get a break under three cards and double undercut those as well and continue from there.

I do this trick with the whole deck and wen I slap the cards I put half the cards in their fist. To me the more cards used in the slap the shocked/suprised/impressed Ur spectator is gonna be. One of my fave tricks
