Born in Middlesbrough, UK in 1951, Chris Rea has been a constant fixture in the rock and blues scene since the release of his debut solo album "Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?" in 1978. With his distinctive deep, gravelly voice and slide guitar playing style Chris Rea has gained international fame and sold over 30 million records worldwide. Consistently named as one of the most popular rock musicians of the 1980's, Chris Rea's legacy as a hugely influential singer and guitarist still resonates to this day. In this rare interview, Chris talks about growing up in Middlesbrough, how he got is start in multiple bands before going solo, his influences and the trials and tribulations of being one of the UK's biggest rock icons.

The fantastic Chris Rea who’s health through recent years hasn’t been kind to him . . Chris always wanted to be a big time pop star but never ever saw himself as a talented singer/songwriter but little did he know he was actually bigger than he gave himself credit for. He’s still one of my biggest singer song writing artists with such a beautiful haunting voice, god bless you Chris you are and still are the best mate.

Even in his twenties, Chris was a genius with lyrics. His words in "Fool If You Think it's Over", are so spot on of a teenage heartache. I'm from Memphis and I am very glad that Chris didn't give that tune to Al Green. No one at all could have presented it better than the wonderful writer.

Another fascinating interview from the late 90's with the legendary Rock Star Chris Rea (Even though he wouldn't think so). Rea has one of the most instantly recognisable voice's and guitar playing styles in the music world. Thank you for posting.

He's very prickly and guarded - strange contrast to the sentimental candour of his music. Always thought he was Italian. He's so dour and lacking in any obvious Italian sensibility he probably is closer to some sort of Irish archetype . Interesting insight.
