Linekar’s tweet didn’t say Nazi Germany though, he said “rhetoric of Germany in the 1930s” for the way Braverman and others are using language that others and dehumanises refugees and pushes blame onto them for societal problems that would still be there whatever. This is exactly what happened in the late 1920s and early 1930s in Germany with reference to those classed as “untermensch”, which was primarily the Jewish people but also included disabled people, homosexuals and the Roma. This is exactly what was said by a Holocaust survivor a few weeks ago and was brushed off by Braverman. Neither were saying that the Tories were Nazis but that facist dictatorships don’t spring up fully formed overnight: it is a slow decline with many warning signs along the way, which included similar rhetoric to that currently employed by our home office, clamping down on the media and free speech and trying to discredit the judiciary or anyone who disagreed with them. No one is saying we’re headed for a repeat of 1940 but lots of people are saying that to ensure we avoid that and we keep the principles we fought for in WW2, which seems to be the key ideal for many of the Conservative party, we need to call out and stop these worrying trends whilst we can. Fintan O’Toole has written about this far better than I can, so I would suggest searching out his recent articles on it. The debate is a lot more nuanced than just “oh it’s Godwin’s law” And yes, I’m aware that the National Socializts came to power in 1933, so you could argue that 1930s Germany essentially means the Nazis, but I think that people read that word and take everything that it entails with it, whereas Linekar was specifically mentioning the rhetoric of the time, and there *are* striking similarities.

Calling Godwin's Law is a thought Terminating cliche. Thought terminating clichés are usually brief, easily memorized phrases with the intent of shutting down any dissent or questioning. They are definitive-sounding phrases, which trick people into believing they are insightful or an answer to their hard question. If I'd been there when he said that I would have shut him down hard.

One of the most disingenuous moves though is to say, "Right, it's illegal to arrive by small boats" - when you're fleeing oppression and credilble threats to life - and to then use the word 'criminals' all the time for arriving by boat as if that makes them equivalent of thieves, murderers and con-men.

A goal hanger is a phrase thats been in use for the past 30 years ...... even linekers registered company is goal hanger productions or somesuch,,,, poor poor poor commentary...ingnorance is not an excuse
