Chris is my absolute favorite. I think Otis and Chris should start a once a week meet up and just record whatever happens. What's going on in their world, with them, their friends, their music.

I saw Shaver in the late nineties at Stache’s, after it moved to around Fifth and High, in Columbus. It was a Sunday afternoon show. I was a bit of a Billy Joe fan through a friend who lived in Austin, a transplant. He loved Billy Joe and all things Outlaw as only a transplant to Texas can. Anyway, I called him and asked him what this was, he more or less just said - go. So, I did. It was one hell of a set. Eddie just stood in one place basically, nearly motionless and expressionless and just played. No histrionics, on gyrating a struggle. He just played. It was searing and beautiful. Incredibly electric and electrifying. At times his dad would kneel down on one knee four or five feet from him and watch the solos with us. He was very proud and said so. And yea, Billy Joe got in his testimony, down on his knees a few times. Such a tragic loss. I hate freakin’ drugs.

Chris speaks the truth. My wife and and I, along with several friends, saw Billy Joe at the Sierra Nevada Big Room in Chico, Ca. 10 years ago or so, and we all still comment to each other that it was an unworldly experience. Scruggs says it right, we were laughing and crying at the same time. Billy Joe’s presence and performance was like a healing. I can’t put my finger on exactly what he did to make such an impression, but the spirit he brought covered the whole room and touched our hearts in a big way.

Chris casually mentioned his mother here. Gail Davies is a pretty damned good singer and songwriter in her own right. I won't get into his father's story, but you can tell by his name that he has some serious country music blood in his veins. I loved the old BR549 shows with Chris and Chuck Mead bouncing off of each other. Best lineup for that band.

Great videos with Chris. I saw Billy Joe at the Exit/Inn once and can confirm it was an outlaw country show that turned into a tent revival. Thanks Brother and more please.

I remember those gospel endings to Neil Diamond's shows back in the late 70s to late 80s. Just like being at a revival, the religious feeling was overwhelming. And I am an atheist.

I was lucky enough to see Billy Joe live twice. It’s not easy to see these legends when you live in MN. But anyway, as a catholic turned atheist, I can say with total honesty, I was envious of Billy Joe’s faith. I lack the ability to suspend disbelief, it’s just not the way my brain works, but watching, listening, and then after the show talking to Billy Joe Shaver , I wanted to believe.

I personally knew Billy Joe. He was the first celebrity I met working at a travel stop in Troy, TX. Later, I would see Billy Joe around Waco, TX. I also would deliver pizza to his house. His old Dodge Van was in the drive. Bumper sticker; "BILLY JOE FOR PRESIDENT." He was a good man. Always took time to talk and listen. I was sad the day he passed. I kept the Waco Newspaper that covered the story of his death, and you are welcome to a copy of it if you want one.

LEE'S Famous Recipe in still around in south-central Kentucky. If The Amazing Mr. Scruggs would have been in Marty Stuart's band circa 2010, at the Jamestown, KY Lakefest Celebration, he would have been within half a mile of our LEE'S. I'd be honored to buy him a meal if he ever passes through this way!

This is a great one. Thanks for posting. I sat next to BJS on a SouthWest Airlines flight from Nashville to Austin on a Sunday afternoon. He was hungover and I was a little bent myself. This was around 2004. I mentioned I read in the paper that he was playing in Nashville but I was doing family stuff and he was pretty non committal. about the show. I dared not bring up the pistol in the bar incident of a few years prior. I've been stealing his lines for years and using them as my quips. "You're only as old as the woman you feel." I remember listening to Austins PBS station KUT the morning Eddie's passing was announced. I'd seen him play twice and the reaction was like the first time I was SRV play in a bar when he was 22 and I was 19-both times you have to pick your jaw up off the floor.Tragic. Was Eddy a member of the 25 club. He as pretty young when he passed. Tragic, tragic loss. Must have been crushing for Billy Joe

Reading the comments about Eddy several make the comparison to SRV. According to his bio he was tutored by Dicky Betts. Never got to see him live but listening to his playing, it has same intensity as when voltage is applied to a noble gas and is ionized. The energy released feels other worldly. Especially love hearing Eddy play on some of the Dwight Yoakam records. Sorry for the hijack, sure loved Billy Joe too.

I would not have been intimidated by him, I have an uncle from very Western NY who lost a finger at age 40--45 when I was 8 and was well not like him but a bit scarry if you did not know him. He everytime would give a single thumbs up with the missing thumb when needing one or if he could give 2 thumbs up as much as he could.

@@JKlasen He is a Grape famer in western NY and was working on Chicken fencing stuff back when he had some chickens the blade guard on a cheap Chop Saw from K-Mart boroke. He sold the Chicken eggs as Farm style to specific egg companies before laws changed in New York about selling non power washed eggs. He got out of working the eggs due to this and could not even at farmers markets/on own property sell them in NY unless Mennonite/Amish could this type of egg. He could have sued the company that made the blade but they were some odd Chinese brand that is so not worth Suing becuse they would hide behind the international laws of China and never have to show up or bribe the judge. Even Suing K-mart was not worth it, but he did 7--10 letters to K--mart letting them know about the product up the ladder to top of command.
