Thank you for taking me along. I decrypted Viet-Cong messages and translated them into English from 1965 to 1967 at Phu Bai (south of Hue) and at Tan Son Nhat Airforce Base in old Saigon. In 1974 I took a bus from Saigon to Phan Rang but if the train was working--which it wasn't then--I would have opted for the train. I always wanted to return to VN but I doubt that wlll happen now in my early 80s. I enjoyed the views, the passengers, your talks, and the old steamers. Once in 1960, I rode on an open freight car across Nevada as I hitchhiked from Ohio to the San Francisco Bay Area.

I arrived at Phu Bai (Camp Eagle) 2 days after the TET offensive started in 1968, but spent most of my first tour (of three) up in the "A-Shau" Valley - (aka, "Death Valley"... of the US forces). I followed that up with 2 more "tours"..... down in the Delta, flying out of the infamous (aka - war within the war... "Black Panthers" ) Vinh Long Airfield with the equally famous, Maverick Gun Team ("Charlie" model, Huey's). I was engaged to a Beautiful, Vietnamese School teacher... who was, devastatingly (to myself and her family) killed during a late night rocket attack on the town of Cao Lan... west of Vinh Long, where she was teaching at the time.... we met on the airfield, where she worked on her days off, at the "Officers Club" for the Outlaws and Mavericks pilots (AC's & "Peter Pilots"). Like yourself, I've always wanted to return to VN... and try to locate and see if Any of my Vietnamese friends are still alive... but, "life" has always kept me too busy to ever get there, and now that I'm retired and can afford to do it.... I doubt that I will, as I'm in my 70s now (but very healthy), and my "round eyed" wife does Not share my passion & desire to go there. Again, welcome home "brother".

Very well-done...I can't help but feel sadness for the mindless war waged there for so long, of which I played a part from 1967 - 1969. In 1995 I returned for a visit and toured Hanoi. I found the people very kind and not at all hostile to an American. I would love to return and see the former base I was assigned to, which now is an international airport servicing a major tourist destination.

Murderous Vietnamese Commie regime even had a thug murdered Christian pastor Giuse Trần Ngọc Thanh, like it has done with many other pastors across the nation. There is a reason why the current Commie Vietnam ranks at the bottom of the world in freedom of speech, (true) freedom of religion, and freedom of the press, barely above Commie China and Commie North Korea. Even today, if the rightful owners refuse to have their homes or lands robbed, the ruthless Vietnamese Commie terrorist regime simply jail or massacre them, have tractors run over their bodies or openly assassinate them in their own homes. Travelers to Vietnam in her current form (not at all like this before the Communists took over) should keep this in mind. Behind the beauty of the land and smiling faces at popular tourist destinations, there are a lot of darkness and tears, bloods, sweats, sorrow, horror, and sufferings all over the country.

There were obligations on the Vietnamese, in return for which the US would pay for ordinance explosives. However, the Vietnamese never met all of their obligations, so US involvement, while not zero, is much restricted.

@clarke barry I got 34 years as an 'engine driver' and before that 7 years driving subway trains. I've risen in the cabs of trains in Germany and Hungary and got to drive one in China ;-).. But as an Asian, who have people live both in Laos and Vietnam and lived through the war, if the world, or at least just SE Asian since the 1960s, turned RED, 100s of millions like me would have died under the communism of Mao in China and Ho in Vietnam. As an older man, you may not believe that, but I like you to go and live in, let say, N. Korea and do whatever you want for the rest of your old life, see how you feel. The America/Vietnam war in the 1960s and 70s was not good, but for 10 of millions of us (Vietnamese, Laos, and Cambodia) would have died more under Ho and Pol Pot and Chinese and Russian Backed "Red."

It's very dangerous standing so close to a moving train. Any loose rigging or other gear can snag you and you're dead meat; even if you're in a vehicle.

Whilst operating a Fast Goods from Kalgoorlie to Perth in Western Australia, we had a load of flat sheet steel on board to the rear. After departing Kalgoorlie, we had a call from control asking us what condition the signals in advance were exhibiting when we approached them. He was told all was good and they were exhibiting the appropiate colour. We asked him why he was asking, he replied that all signals behind us were DARK and he could get no response from them. Suspecting something was amiss with our train, I stopped in the middle of nowhere and walked back to check the load. Sure enough, the steel sheeting had come adrift and was protruding over the side of the wagons and cutting the signal poles in half like a knife thru butter. Consider these poles are cast iron. Apparently we'd take out no less than 9 such poles already. We stayed there until they sent out a front end loader to reposition and secure the loading then were sent on our way no further issues. So yeah, unless you have a death wish, I do not recommend standing and closer than 10 feet of a moving train, even that, may still be not enough.

Actually, with the implementation of new suburban system, we deliberated long and hard what type of seating to install. Keeping in mind the vandalism that is so ripe these days. Eventually we settled for upholstered soft cushioning with a manufacturer claiming the material could not be cut or damaged. Mind you it was bloody expensive to boot. guess what, within 4 months these seat were getting destroyed by vandalism. I then suggested they should all be replaced by stainless steel, let's see them damage that. Unfortuantely they didn't agree to that, and still have the same material today, still being vandalised.

Maybe that’s because there is still mandatory military recruitment. I see these youngsters running bare feet at 5am most mornings . Healthy body healthy mind there is hardly any obesity in Vietnam.

Such behaviour does not ensure many fans. This country has been fighting a war longer than he has been on the planet, yet has thrived since it's independence. I have no clue how you could miss a train when you are crossing the track. You can feel those things coming long before they they are visible. They could add bells and ditch lights to their locomotives like they do here in North America.

Bells and whistles, lights and what ever other thing you can think of will not stop. I MUST BE IN FRONT. I've seen lots of US road rage , late exit, brake check videos. Non of them have anything on Driving in Vietnam. I'm a Brit and having lived here for 12 years I've found the only way to drive my SUV is don't look left or right, make a turn slowly and they get out of your way. As an ex tunnel construction inspector I was asked by a railway enthusiast who wanted to bring the Da Lat mountain railway back to life. To inspect the 7 tunnels on the line, all were perfect just a few drips of water it's the bridges and rails that would be a problem. The original locomotives were sold back to he Swiss ?? So new engines would be needed, these can be build in India.

@@TheByard As a retired train driver, I can concur with your thoughts. We had many issues of road rage, motorists trying to cross the track despite the boom gates being down. Lots of collisions and deaths occurred as a direct result. Drivers reported that many such occurrences occurred during their shifts, management refused to believe it. I challenged them to put CCTV cameras in both ends of the train and record the events. After two weeks of recording, they surrendered, and accepted there was an issue there. We ran many test trains, flashing yellow lights on the roof of the cabs, twin flashing head lights and even attaching an American bell, clanging away on the front approaching crossings, result ZILCH. Made no difference whatever. People simply refuse to see what they choose to ignore.

Thanks for a tour of a Country that should have moved forward after the American left. But as you can well see, once Americans and Capitalist were run out and the Communist took over both the North and South, nothing has improved or seemed to get better, run down houses, run down roads, run down transportation and the way of life that is still as it was in the Vietnam War.
