Ian McNiece is a very fine actor. He's very good when he's just plotting away.I have no idea why the director thought it would be a good idea to finish with these fits of maniacal gloating laughter. It seems clumsy and scarcely any better than Kenneth McMillan's gruesome bloated pustule.

Chazbot I suspect it’s actually the influence of the Lynch movie. Case in point-I seem to remember the book saying the Baron had dark hair, but the movie made it out like red hair was a familial trait. Hence the red color scheme to the Harkonnen’s here.

Funny as the laughter sounds, it's really quite cheesy and forced. Shame, because I really like McNeice's acting for the Baron apart from the stupid cartoon villain laughter.

Yes, it doesn't really suit McNiece's (much better) version of the Baron as a smooth and sadistic genius.

@@dkupke *You are correct - there is even a scene in the miniseries where the Fremen are shown dying and music from the Lynch movie plays - and of course, Sting and Paul have the same red hair and hairstyle.*

This is the best Baron by far; he’s even an improvement on the original. He came up with the plan on his own without help from Piter, he survived the Duke’s attempt on his life with no physical or psychological injuries, he saw through Feyd’s assassination attempt without any help from Thufir, he came up with a sound plan to overthrow the Emperor without blurting it out to the Fenrings and he even seems largely dauntless before the Emperor. Heck, even his death is slightly more dignified.

I think I’m having one of those Mandela effect moments here. I remember watching this on SciFi channel when it first premiered and I could have sworn the Baron said “coffers” and not “treasuries”.

I think the Baron was being overly optimistic about the Arrakis population being able to tell the difference between members of his family.

Yes and no. It would require very delicate manuevering and manipulation of the public.
