1. You NEVER use mastic around water. Actual thinset mortar should be used to create your skim coat underneath the deck mud. 2. You need to chemically weld the seam you created when you cut the shower pan liner to wrap around the curb. 3. You should use deck mud for pan work. 4. You need to create screed points around the entire parameter of the pan and use them to create the correct slope for both floats. 5. You need pebbles in place on weep holes during both floats. 6. You failed to put a bead of silicone caulk around the drain under the shower pan membrane. 7. When using wood for the curb it needs to be pressure treated for a couple reasons. First, wood absorbs moisture even if there's a barrier, pressure treated wont adsorb as much. Second, pressure treated lumber doesn't expand and contract as much as non pressure treated wood. Build the curb out of concrete or use a prefabricated curb. You can even use bricks as a safe alternative. 8. You need shower pan corner dams. 9. You need to do a 24 hour water test. This is a fundamentally flawed installation that will fail.

I guess I would do a few things different, but thanks for taking the time to do this video. Where I live building code does not allow for electric boxes behind a tub or shower wall. I've never seen thinset or anything under the first mud layer. Using wood for the step is really asking for trouble, any little leak will rot it out and cause a failure. Many many folks have had to redo shower bases because of using wood. And if you ever have a problem with the shower valve, your going to have to destroy the wall to access it. I always lay out showers and tubs so an access door or panel can be on the backside for repairs. But hey you seem like a good guy with great intentions! Hope it all works for many years.

Yes, you really need to use mortar on the top layer. It’s easier to set/manipulate than dry pack.
@paulness8352

A simpler way would be to lay the pan liner down, use dry pack for the preslope(which is porous so it will weep/drain), then waterproof it with either a adhesive membrane or a roll on membranr. Did twice the work for the same reault. But thats the game, i guess.

Thanks for watching. I don’t know a lot about it floating walls as it’s not something I’ve had to deal with. First thing to find out is how much of a gap is required per code for your floating wall? Next, is how big is you shower? The hope would be that you can double up your footer for your walls and still meet code for your floating wall.

Not 100% sure on the construction paper, some People use it and some put down Duraroc. I’d try for 1/4” preslope at the drain, then go up 1/4 inch per foot. So if your drain is in the center of your shower it would be 3’ , so 3/4” of preslope, so at your walls it would be 1” and drain would be 1/4.

You CAN put the liner on the floor, better if glued, and this was how it was done with lead liners. But pre slope under the liner prevents standing water, and delays deterioration. Further, a careful removal can result in reusing the pre slope.

For the preslope mortar bed. You said you needed to do 1.5” on the sides to achieve your slope because your drain was high. Couldn’t you have lowered the drain? Also I understand a preslope is 1/4” per foot. But what should the thickness start at from the drain. A 1/4” or thicker? Thanks.
@chrisbuildsitall

First layer is a dry pack, used to set the correct slope of the pan, second layer is a mortar mix that goes on top of the pan liner to get you up to the correct height for tiling and fixing any issues you had with your original pre slope. Many builders 2 layers, but also many only 2 one. I assume it’s builder experience/preference for the most part.

What I do is use a scrap piece of poplar and cut the depth of your shower pan tile and use that to suck to the top of your drain and scrape the exact amount of dry pack away. If your stuck in smaller areas for a level even though poplar is expensive it’s typically flat.

Always to the pan first, this includes when you do your tiling. Always want to ensure the walls overlap onto the pan so water will drain into the pan if water ever happens to get behind the tiles. If all the walls are up he can get away with just removing the bottom 12” or so to install whatever pan your doing

Why do you use Sand/Topping mix for the slab then once you add the pvc lining, you use just mortar mix?
@chrisbuildsitall
@chrisbuildsitall 3 жыл бұрын
Sand/topping is used to make a “dry pack”, you use that layer to set your slope and drain height, then after the liner you’ve got to put down a layer that the tile attaches too, which is just a high quality mortar mix.
@cingularities
@cingularities 3 жыл бұрын
Can you use sand/topping instead of mortar mix after the lining and create the perfect slope on top of the lining instead of under? Or will that cause problems
@chrisbuildsitall
@chrisbuildsitall 3 жыл бұрын
Your only issue would be if water got under your liner then it would just sit on a flat surface and create problems. That’s why you want a slope under the liner, if anything gets under the liner it still gets directed to the drain. Not to say many people do build them that way!

As a professional installer I am not ripping on your install job but 8 out of 10 wood shower curbs FAIL. They are wood. Even if you bought the best 2x4's out there they fail. Why, because they shrink so when you stack three 2x4's and they only shrink 1/16" thats 3/16" total in about 6 months time. While that bottom 2x4 resting on the slab is expanding where it touches the concrete it is shrinking on the top surface where it mates to the next 2x4. This is why you get the washboard effect when laying laminate flooring over concrete floors. 1st sign is flaking grout followed by horizontal cracks in sidewall grout. Stand on it in a year and bounce and have someone watch the curb, it will move up and down. now water will start traveling horizontal and it only gets worse. We always do solid curbs, failure rate is ZERO.
