@@rolandmoreno3526 I did my pump and steering box on my suburban. I personally feel like it was worth it. Rock Auto had my rebuild kids for $20 for the pump and $30 for the steering box. The time it takes to rebuild one really depends on your skill level and tools. I feel like I could do bushings, rings, and seals in probably thirty minutes on each one now that I've rebuilt them. Probably will take you an afternoon if it's your first. Buuuut here's the shitty part. If your flat surfaces are gouged up or your oring seal ate a groove into your shaft then you just wasted your money on a rebuild kit you can't use. Or you disassemble to decide if it's even worth it and wait a week for parts? If you're in a hurry its definitely not worth it. Buy the new part and slap it in.

*Discovered the secret to getting the big piston teflon ring on without stretching it* I also had a very hard time getting the piston in the housing with the new seal due to stretch. Bought another new seal and stared at it for 20 mins. Yatzee! If you put the teflon seal on FIRST, starting it deep in the groove, it slips right on. Then feed the o-ring around it and slip it past the teflon seal in the groove. 0 stretch and took 2 mins. Love your videos, keep it up 👍

Chris... here is a easy cleaning idea... I take a large metal coffee can, and a $9 single burner hotplate from Walmart. I fill can 1/2 way/// or as needed for depth... with Purple Power. Bring it to near boiling and insert your parts. All the goopey heavy grease will emulsify and everything will come out spotless... then rise with a hose... then put back in as required. I do this with hubs without having to take them apart... they come out like new.

It would be like a “Simple Green” sold in the Midwest and elsewhere. It is strange, as both products are environmentally safe, mostly made using the oils found in the skin of oranges. ZEP is a large company that sells variety to cleaning products yet not sold in some states. ZEP sells a 55 gallon drum of powder that is an orange powder. Smells like oranges. True story, in a shop in California, a shop was closing for the day and a tech scooped some ZEP floor cleaner. You can wet the floor and spread it around like extra dirty spots to brush, broom, mop or like our dealer, used an electric push scrubber. The tech sprinkled the orange power on the damp floor & the power turns green immediately. After clearing the floor, you hit it with your water hose. Part of the green watered floor solution came out the door and was running downhill away from the building on a white concrete slab. A person driving around the building though this was “Green Anti-Freeze” headed for the curb that drains into a nearby creek. The person freaked and dialed 911 to report this unthinkable crime against nature. 2 fire trucks, police and 1 ambulance came quickly to clean up the violation, arrest the offender and provide first aide to any person or creature may have ingested. Once explained and examined, it was explained to the concern citizen to calm then and reduce there fears. Now they can sleep better. But the law in this county had a pollution rule that the response required the shop owner to get a $7,500 ticket. He had to pay a lawyer and pay to have a ZEP salesperson to show MHDS to court to have the ticket dropped. Close call. Glad to help you learn because you don’t have be an ASE Master in all eight categories like I did every five years. Others may learn from the written word, some by seeing and others by doing. Some all three. You’re welcome as learning never stops.

more tips: To start, taking that main bolt off, I used a plumber's monkey pipe wrench. Next part, to spin the next piece out, put a bolt in one of the holes, then, get a small closed end wrench and use the shaft as leverage to turn the piece out. No special tools and is a thousand times easier.

Hello Chris my power steering gear box is leaking at the input shaft tip. Some shafts don't have a round piolet shaft at the end of the input shaft I guess it's called a piolet shaft but I took it apart and there is no way to service that. I tried to tap out the dowel pins but they wouldn't budge maybe I can get it welded on the inside to seal it or use epoxy. I don't know if I can get that piece part separately. I'm thinking about just getting an entire rebuilt box. I bought a complete seal kit and replaced all the o rings and shaft seals but that was in vain. I don't know why there is that nipple shaft its not needed. My car is a 1976 firebird and I think its the original box.

Granted, I've never taken any classes, I've just worked on cars as a hobby, including rebuilding an engine, swapping out a transmission, etc. All I did for study is get the textbook and read it all the way through and make note cards and take quizzes so---I will keep trying! I'm transitioning from Accounting to opening my own mobile auto repair business. I don't understand why some people think mechanics are stupid. I'm sure some are, but if you can pass an ASE test, good grief, you're pretty smart! I've taken the CPA exam and passe it and I find the ASE difficult.

Matt Garza, When you have experience and game, don’t give up as I have a tip for you to pass. I your practice book, read the question and break it into sections. Ask yourself “What are they asking” because certain work are “Tells”. Example; A bent steering part will effect the steering axis inclination and the Ackerman angle. Tech A says no. Tech B says yes. Both or neither.
@deankay44343 жыл бұрын
Sorry, on phone and hit wrong button. In the question, the word “WILL” is a give away, plus, having two issues pointed out in the same statement is a give away. The answer is YES! It effects both. When reading the question, read until you find the one word that changes the meaning of the statement. Giving two effects is also a clue it’s true because one is iffy, but two are clearly correct. There are 5 types of questions; Do, Will, Won’t, Possibly, Maybe and Can’t. Once you read the test question and you come across one of these words, stop. Go back and re-read the question and include the “Key” word, stop and ask yourself what are they asking? The just told you. I took all the test (8) in one night. I was the last one left because everyone else took 2, or 3 maybe 4. But I just got it over with each time. From the first time (Which have more question than re-certification) Now you have all eight, you can take the advanced emissions L1 but it has 100 questions. And unfortunately for those who test are crap & not needed, you can’t get a job from dealerships to a city garage. Even the FBI garage requires ASE cert and it increases your pay! I think “Trillraf” got schooled! Pass a test and quit being mad at life... You will like yourself more girl! ASE Master Tech since 1978, UTI instructor, ACDelco seminar and class instructor. Be sure to measure your input shaft size. Typically before 1980 they are 13/16. Afterwards they are 3/4 inch. I posted what I discovered were the right kits in another comment for the input shaft seal. I am guessing that the other kits are similar in that they won't work unless they put in both sizes for the input shaft.

Chris! Do you know if gearing is reversible in each box, or those are completely different design. I need one box, bolts on but moves the pitman arm in the opposite way?
@marteck3196 жыл бұрын
This is accomplished by using a different ball screw and piston from a box that you find turns opposite your box. There are different size saginaw boxes used in all makes domestic car truck and van. Be careful though some have a very fast turn ratio. My 75 Ford Bronco stock Saginaw box is a 6 turn lock to lock. The 76-77 bronco is 4 turn lock to lock. My Chevy suburban (identical but larger than the Bronco housing) is 3 turns. An astro van is 2.5 or less lock to lock. Lastly observe which side of the input shaft the sector is on just puzzle thru it the gear teeth are same if it flops left or right. Happy hunting! more

Yes there is but they won’t sell it. There is a higher profit margin to sell the entire box instead of one newly machined spool valve. Can you u say “$500 dollars profit neighbor?” It’s a $60 part, seal kit and core. If you have the tools, book time is 1.2 hours of labor. You never get paid to clean the outside, inside or paint it.

right off the bat I took mine mostly apart before I watched this video meaning I didn't mark that deal in the beginning of the video.

That mark if for the preload on the bearings .. just snug it up where you can still turn the shaft by hand

@@chriscraft77022 Thanks for that. The one I'm most worried about is the one that adjusts back and forth via an allen wrench then has the lock nut. This is I guess is the pitman shaft. The adjuster protrudes out of the side aluminum cover held by 4 bolts. I also took that completly apart. Do you know the adjustment on that one? Thanks
@chriscraft770223 жыл бұрын
that’s the one you dont mess with.. the problem is now you spend money and time to rebuild and if those don’t mesh right they will wear out and you will have play in the box...

what if i fucked up and didn't mark the housing, input shaft, and lock nut at the very beginning? how do i get it reset correctly? the manual says 1/2 inch back off. i tried that but i got a lot of play in my steering wheel still.

I needs an inch and a half pounds of resistance on it .. just take the slack out

hi chris im wondering if you can help with a bit of advice i have a 1979 trans am and i have been threw 2x steering boxes recon ones from classic industries the one i have on now is the 2nd steering box it worked fin e for a couple of days then steering went stiff. i have jacked front end up and tried to bleed but nothing i took off pressure hose and turned over and fluid is flying out of the end of the pipe so its not a pressure issue on the return hose very little pressure not enough to go back to pump i have been using transmission fluid could this be the problem instead of using power steering fluid i thouight they were the same any help would be appriciated thx scot...
@chriscraft770226 жыл бұрын
transmission fluid just seems to makes the seals leak... I would change the power steering pump.. inspect the pressure and return lines really good and make sure they aren’t kinked or blocked first... I have never had a steering box go bad.. they just get play and get sloppy
@stillgamebut6 жыл бұрын
chris when the problem first accured of first reconned box i thought it was the pump and that was replaced only found out it was the box on hearing the noise i first heard in pump it was because steering box went bad but its strange how 2 have went bad thx scot also i have rebuild engine and it was the original box was on it that went bad as well so i thinking fluid can it be anything inside the box going bad:

What’s the main reason these boxes will develop steering input play?
@trillrifaxegrindor44115 жыл бұрын
wear,kind of obvious no?
@Gap_machine5 жыл бұрын
trillrif axegrindor not what I’m asking, I’m trying to get a specific answer, like for example if there is a specific part that develops play inside that co tributes to the backlash. Or simply is the gear wearing down.....
@trillrifaxegrindor44113 жыл бұрын
@@Gap_machine seals and bearing develop play from "wear" shafts develop play from "wear" the box itself can develop play from "wear" improper assembly and adjustment can develop play from "wear or user error"
