Hi Chris, I'm fairly new to ASL I've been learning it on my own for about two months off and on from watching your videos. The hardest part for me is the receptive part of it. It's very difficult to read what others are signing because they sign fast. Whats a good way to learn how to read sign language? Thank you
@ChrisGorges
@ChrisGorges 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you are taking it upon yourself to learn sign language, that's great! In regard to reading others signing, the biggest thing is exposure, so try to expose yourself to as much sign language as possible, watching videos, lessons, vlogs, etc. Second, be patient with yourself, it will take time and it may seem like progress is slow, but be persistent and stick to it and you'll get more and more comfortable with the language. In the meantime, if it is a video, feel free to back it up or slow it down. If it's in person, simply ask the person the either slow down or sign what you didn't understand again
@christydehner105

Hi! So I saw a few other videos of other ASL and I saw them sign nervous differently. I saw it sign with your hands out, palm down and shaking your dominant hand like you’d shake “So-so”. Is that incorrect or just another way to sign nervous?
@ChrisGorges
@ChrisGorges 4 жыл бұрын
Great question, just another variation, although with a slightly more nuanced meaning. It's like you are shaking with nervousness. You can actually see three different variations shown on Signing Savvy, the one you described is the first one while the one I showed is the third

Can ASL used in singapore? Is there any difference at different country?
@ChrisGorges
@ChrisGorges 4 жыл бұрын
Usually, countries have a local sign language that is used by Deaf ones from the region (ie. German Sign Language, French Sign Language, etc) however, with that said, ASL is also widely used around the globe as well. In some areas, like Dubai, there are several sign languages used in the community at the same time (Pakistan, India, Arabic, ASL, and others)
@drray9211
@drray9211 4 жыл бұрын
Singapore Sign Language (SgSL) is the native sign language recognised and accepted by the Deaf community in Singapore. SgSL comprises a combination of Shanghainese Sign Language (SSL), American Sign Language (ASL), Signing Exact English (SEE) and locally developed signs. You should have no problem if you sign with ASL.
