My father put my mum, sister and I on this train, waved us goodbye, then drove to the final destination in order to wave to us as we arrived and take us home. This was about 65 years ago and is such a fond memory.

The skill and dedication that must go into such a railway is incredible ! This is exceptional and a testament to the people who built it and maintain it. Well done indeed. Australia

Imagine being a race car driver in the Roaring 20s, and building a miniature railway so useful, that it was useful public transport until the 1990s. So useful, that it played a part in WW2.

I was totally not expecting the multitude of cars that these locomotives were pulling. Absolutely astounding that we figured out how to generate this much power out of some iron, coal, water, and fire.

So beautyful but I don't think it's very comfortable sitting. Is this scale or was this format actually used in the past?
@paulw.woodring7304 Жыл бұрын
It's meant to be a miniature tourist attraction, but also practical transportation for this resort area of Kent in SE England. Billed as the smallest public railway in the World, at 15" gauge. The track width is quarter scale, but the engines are 1/3 scale and the cars a little bigger than that. They run at very high speeds for a small railroad, up to an actual 25 to 30 mph, on the nearly dead-flat terrain of the Romney Marsh between Hythe and Dungeness Lighthouse.
@frglee Жыл бұрын
I found it actually not too bad to travel in, and I'm 6'5"! The 15 inch gauge comes from a castle owner in northern England to show he could make a practical railway using this gauge, useful to carry goods to the castle as early as the 1880s. Mostly the railways were planned as tourist lines in the 20th century and nearly 100 examples have been built (and continue to be built) around the world, over half in the UK, with most of them still running services. Google '15 inch gauge railways' for a complete list.
