I needed to hear this. This goes beyond singing. There's so much self judgement, comparison, and condemnation at times in my life. Feeling like I'm not enough, why can't I do or sound like them, I'm such a failure, I don't deserve to live, and so on. Choosing to just BE, having some self acceptance, and being okay being me. That was something great about Kurt; he put those feelings into words and music, he made it clear that I wasn't alone in the way I felt - and I appreciate this next step your suggesting, that yes we aren't alone and infact the ME, my voice, who I am that I might've dismissed is here with me too, and that's worth experiencing and celebrating.

ya i saw an interview where butch said kurt kept saying the recording was too loud and then tried to sing and play his guitar as softly as possible laying on a couch. pretty crazy how powerful this song is as he was trying not to be. the cello just brings the song to a whole new dark level. love kurt

Well said! This is how I write all my music. The first time i listen to any beat i press record on my phone and let the music take me on a journey without any goals. I record the first mumbles, sounds, words i come up with. This usually sparks genius vocal ideas and Melodies. Or when i make a track, I keep no lyrics in mind whatsoever until the instrumental is good and then i do the same thing with my phone and press record.

I had been playing, singing, and recording for a while, and i wrote a song after i broke up with the girl i had been seeing for a number of years. I always hated my voice, pitchy, not great tone. And i wrote this sad song, and was goofing around with the mic, and sang way softer than i normally would, and holy shit it was the best my voice ever sounded. I stopped trying to project, and just felt it.
@BrandonShere2 жыл бұрын
This is one of the best advice videos you've given. It's SO easy to write a song with so much feeling, then get on the mic and feel blank trying to get it right. What a great example of a song to sing to remind yourself to just let go.

I dont know if my singing teacher has been watching your videos (I doubt it haha) but she's taken the same approach with me with a song from Nirvana Unplugged. Being new to singing she tells me i'm trying far too hard, so learning to sing "Oh Me" in a relaxed, lower register has been something of a revelation. It turns out I have quite a gritty tone that I was never aware of.

Thank you for delving into the psyche of the vocalist, Chris! I covered Something In The Way when I first heard The Batman was being released. I remember being frustrated with my original take. The vocals just weren't hitting right for me. So I laid down on the floor, turned the lights off, and recorded my vocals. Laying on the floor, I was free from any preconceptions or self-judgment on how the take was supposed to sound and I was very happy with the final results.

I need to be reminded this every now and then. Often times I try too hard when singing aggressively or I push myself to my limit. Sometimes just letting go and being one with the music is enough to bring the best out of your voice. I tried this exercise with the karaoke a couple times before recording, and listening back, let's just say I was pleased with the results. I tend to not be a soft singer usually, but this gives me the confidence to try it more. Hopefully I can incorporate this mindset into more of the aggressive singing as well.

When I’m speaking in a very natural monotone calm voice, I really like my voice, maybe because it shows the low end of my voice which sometimes I even surprise myself. (Mostly because in my more normal speaking voice I’m much higher) and I can really feel the vibrations in my chest and neck.

I’m a huge Nirvana fan, it’s my favorite band. It blows my mind to think of all the aspects that gave birth to this album. Kurt, Dave, Kris recorded by the genius mind of Butch. Then, the mix goes over to Andy Wallace for mastering and he creates this never before heard huge, yet dynamic sound that changed everything. Everyone involved were or became legends.

All art, whether it’s music, painting, writing, or cooking, is an expression of emotion. The point of learning the technical parts of the craft are to help you better express. If you never learn to express yourself through the art form; you aren’t making art. It’s art’s imitation. It puts the same taste in peoples mouth as when you encounter a fake person. Someone who pretends to have emotions they don’t.

I have an odd question, when I "try" to sing it's quite high and I have little to no range or control, but when I'm doing stuff like this on car rides and humming, my voice gets really low, like lower than my normal speaking voice. Is this normal? Am I possibly speaking higher because of unnecessary tightness in my vocal chords?
@رزيئة2 жыл бұрын
I guess when you hum you're relaxed so you can reach lower notes. And the thing about your tightness might be true. Just try singing along to your favorite songs in a way that's relaxed and comfortable to you until you can actually start to match the singers. Then you'll be able to sing the song without listening to it, that's what I personally do. It might not work for you though so don't get stressed out if it doesn't. Good luck!
