50 years ago you caught these by the bucket. Blood worms were the ticket. Chum with cat food or crushed mussels with yellow sinkers. Then they disappeared, now in NY you can keep 1.

Yes and just tossing hand fulls of rice or even pea size gravel for chum. In a boat we use to use a toilet plunger on a long stick to just stir up the bottom. You need to use about a size 4 long shank hook and only thread a two inch piece of worm.

@@davidbraun4922 Honestly, many were lost due to the draggers / commercial fisherman. Then you had stupid people keeping fish you could see through. When I was a child and learning to fish, the winter flounder were in great abundance. I went on a party boat with my dad. We caught many, but through back tons because they were too small. I decided to walk around the boat and saw another angler who kept every single flounder he caught, no matter the size. I grabbed one of the small ones, you could just about see through it, and asked him why he kept it, there's no meat on it. Unfortunately, there were too many anglers like this one. I went on another fishing trip for winter flounder later with a friend of mine and his dad. We caught close to 100 flounder between us, we only kept 45. We threw back all the ones we could tell were females. This was all before there were regulations. So, both commercial and recreational fisherman are to blame. The fishery should be completely closed to both for 5 years. No bi-catch allowed of winter flounder for commercial. Don't get me started on Fluke or Seabass regs.

Geez! Winter flounder were as common as spearing in the 60’s and most of the 70’s. Jamaica bay, The entire shore from Sandy hook NJ to Montauk point was paved with them. We anchored up in four foot of water in East Moriches and frequently had over 150 fish. Don’t worry, we only kept 10 or so. In the late 70’s they rapidly dwindled and as of the 80’s they were gone.

Cool video...haven't seen so many winter flounder caught in one day in decades. They also like clams and mussels. I used to put a piece of corn on after hooking the before mentioned or the worm. It would help keep it on the hook a little better.

Winters are very tasty. Haven't fished for them in 35 years. But in the 60s & 70s we got loads of them in Barnegat bay up to 3 3/4 lbs. I recall the smell of the meat smelling like shrimp when cleaning them. Didn't bleed them out back then.

Get yourself a baiting needle. We use them regularly for ragworm (think it’s your sand worm) in the uk. Another trick we do is dunk them before you cast. Helps them stiffen up a bit and toughen up. Regular cast them out to 150yrds with a 5oz sinker and catch good flatties doing it.

@ChrisMcIntee
@ChrisMcIntee 7 ай бұрын
Jamaica 2 does pretty well.. dauntless would probably be seabassin, sometimes the sneaky thing to do is hop on a seabass trip which goes further offshore and just target fluke, which could be a bust, but you might end up catching better quality that way.

Dont use the whole worm, flounder mouths are tiny and the worms are expensive. When i was a kid in the seventies, early eighties we would cut a worm into five, six pieces worked great would catch dozens all you need is a little piece and you dont have the problem of casting the worm off.
