Great video chris! Here in the netherlands fishing for zander is HUGE. Fishing for them is the best here in the big rivers, bigger lakes and even in the cities. A tip to improve better hooking is to use smaller baits. You can easily cut a single baitfish in two, maybe even three slices.

A good few years back I experimented with a cage feeder packed with mashed tinned Pilchard/Sardine whilst deadbaiting, I didn't notice much difference in pick up rates (f all as opposed to f all) but I did have a heated argument with a live aboard boater who acccused me of polluting the river (I must admit the slicks I produced made it appear as though the Exxon Valdiz had gone down in the river...) 'Listen mate, that is fish oil, organic, natural, unlike the mineral and synthetic oil 💩 that you lot have no qualms about pumping into the river!'* *I didn't know whether to capitalise this as it was shouted across the Thames... Zander can be released into established still waters. Grafham, Rutland, etc all have Zander and they're competitively fished for as part of catch and a release competitions. I think essentially if they're established and low chance of escaping to spread, they're fine. Obviously waters can remove them if undesired.

I've never fished for Zander. Unfortunately there isn't many places with them around me (if any!) - Why does it differ so much than pike fishing? I regularly go pike fishing using two trebles, drop-off indicators etc but yet every video Zander, it's basically a carp fishing set up with a deadbait. Little to no information on Zander imo, keen to understand why.
@jeremyperraud13578 ай бұрын
In France there isn't much fishermen using a deadbait setup for zander, the majority of zander's catch are by jigging in deep water from a boat
@martinryan81018 ай бұрын
Hi. Zander tend to be more finicky. They also have much smaller mouths which are really boney. Low light/ dusk can be a good time as they use their amazing eyesight. I’ve done well on 3rd of a small roach on a very long hair on a fluro hooklength and a size 10 Mixa hook. I use a light feeder rod with a quiver tip so they feel as little initial resistance as possible. Zander cannot be stocked into lakes, I believe the only lake that has a license for this is Houchins Fishable Lakes just outside Colchester. No doubt I’ll be told I’m wrong on most or all that I’ve written!

Wild to hear lures are not allowed, but bait fishing is. That is the opposite of most regulations here in Canada. I know of lakes or parks where organic bait is not allowed, artificial lures only, never the other way around! Interesting
@itsa_me_amikey7 ай бұрын
It's because they don't want folks casting all around the fishery while the predominant focus of the lakes is carp fishing. I fish a complex that allows lure fishing from nov1 to the last day of feb, but its mainly because the rest of the year has too many carp anglers on it and there is essentially no room to cast around.
@differentfins7 ай бұрын
@@itsa_me_amikey Okay, that makes sense. I am used to having a lake all to myself. Where I live in central Canada lakes literally outnumber people so its common not to have rules as such or any competition. Thanks for clarifying this.

They do everywhere in the UK mate zander are invasive and could have a detrimental effect on our native populations. But I agree stunning can't be the best way and yes it must cause stress on the other fish
@TheMortalKombatent8 ай бұрын
@@georgedawson235 there have been studies done in uk canals that showed the introduction of zander only lead to an increased average size of baitfish. they dont effect european waters so why should they effect ours?
@paterpeter19858 ай бұрын
Yes they are invasive, but so are carp. Carp have a much more ecological effects on a body of water due to their feeding behavior and people baiting heavily to fish for them. Here in the Netherlands we have them all of our waters for decades now as long as they are turbid or deep enough. We have basically the same species of fish as you. There is absolutely no noticable effect. They seem to take up their own niche
