At 80 years old, I have had many tips on how to chip, from friends, golf instructors etc. However with all this help, I never was very consistent with my chipping. Over the weekend, I watched this video and practiced in my living room. The next day I played golf and had my best chipping day ever which resulted in my best score this season a 78, two strokes under my age. I even chipped two in, one for a birdie and the other for a par. Thanks Chris for some great tips. Also, I really enjoy all of your videos.

I'm speechless. I cannot believe how many strokes I saved from your technique! I finally feel confident using more body than wrist. I had many compliments over the past 3 weeks on getting within 3-8 feet from the pin on chipping and pitching the ball. No more gimmick clubs. My biggest downfall is when I lose faith and think I'm going to chip too far. When I do, the ball barely goes a yard. I go back to your basics, have confidence in the movement, and I'm back again! Thanks for sharing.

Davis Love III told me to step off the distance to the cup and fly my PW half way and the ball will roll the other half. This works to perfection on flat or mostly flat greens.
@apaulmcdonough21702 жыл бұрын
Yes, a great Formula as long as one can consistently Judge the Swing needed to land on the Target Spot. Land *2 Feet Short* of the Target and you end up *4 Feet Short* of the Hole because of your 50/50 ratio with the PW. I agree with Chris about varying Club Selection because First, I find my Distance from the Ball to a Target Spot 3 to 5 Feet onto the Green (Carry Distance) and then measure the remaining Distance to the Hole (Roll Out Distance). I read - Target Spot to the Hole - as "a Putt" to adjust "Roll Out" and THEN make a Club Selection, based on "Carry" vs. "Roll Out".

Really good instruction. I enjoy and learn from your videos. Thanks, As for club selection I use the rule of 12 Less flight distance should result in more accuracy. The key is estimating the distance to the landing spot and distance of rollout required. I chip more with a 8 or 9 iron than in the past where I always used a PW Rule of 12 can be googled for explaination and exmples.

Chris great video, thanks. A question: I see many videos explaining an alternative technique by using the bounce of the club instead of coming negative into the bal and then the grass. What is your opinion about that and why didn’t you use this in your video? Regards
@apaulmcdonough21702 жыл бұрын
You use "the Bounce on Wedges" for longer Pitch Shots where you need more Ball Speed and Spin. The Shot that Chris is demonstrating - "the Chip" - is simply a very short range "Pitch and Run" that doesn't need any Height or Spin because there is no Obstacle in the way.
@sushibar7773 жыл бұрын
1) Accelerate the club head through the ball. For a short chip, take it back less. For a longer chip, take it back a bit further. That will give less or more club head speed, respectively, at impact. Decelerating the club head is a common mistake, especially on short chips and puts. Accelerating the club head through the ball applies to all shots, from tee shots to puts. Adjust your takeaway for distance. Longer takeaway means more club head acceleration. 2) Pick a landing spot, and hit to it. You want to get the ball rolling on the green well before the hole. A rolling ball has more chance of going in than a flying or bouncing ball. The tip here to use different clubs for different length chips helps with that. A longer roll means a lower lofted club (e.g., a short iron). A shorter roll means using a wedge of some sort.

Chris, I was doing everything right, except my torso was tilted back a bit. And I was blading so many chips and it’s been so frustrating. I recently found my full swing pretty well, as my sequencing has improved dramatically. Finally. Now with the level shoulders, the ball is popping up correctly and I’ve rediscovered my chipping. Thank you for that. I’m finally really enjoying my golf, and in this upcoming ‘23 season, I expect my handicap will be dropping quite a bit. You coming to the states at all this year? The northeast? I’d love to get coached by you if you’ll ever be around this area.

Number 2, level shoulders are crucial, but like you alluded too, all the tips say, ball back, hands forward, those things drop the back shoulder, which moves the bottom of the swing way behind the ball, then you're screwed.
