I will second anyone who had an "aha" moment here. I have learned the G major scale in the 5 positions, and I know diatonic triad shapes, but for some reason I am a bonehead and never thought to do this. This is life-changing for me. Sorry for all the advanced guitarists out there, I am just a hobbyist having fun. This is definitely level-stepper type lesson, thanks so much. So I guess another way to think of this, but it may be too complicated when actually soloing on the fly, but you are clearly playing G Ionian, then if you move up to the 4 chord, using your intervalic melody, you are playing in C Lydian (with the sharp 4). Thanks for helping make these connections for me. Now I know why I learned the G major scale in all the positions!

I thought this lesson was great. Information I can put to use immediately as I work on playing up the fret board on music for my church’s worship service. I really like your teaching approach. Little hype or unnecessary noise, just information that I find to be right sized for a single lesson I can use to explore the fretboard for weeks. You have my favorite guitar lessons on the internet.

Jumped over to your channel from Marty's channel where you did the circle of fifths lesson/demo. I have been playing for 45 years and have been bogged down in the across-the-fretboard scales, patterns and chords, mostly relying on muscle memory. The constraint is the G major scale, we are limiting ourselves to THAT set of 7 notes. GABCDEF# As is evident, that scale contains an F#. In relation to C, F# is the #4. Does that connect the dots? Happy to try a different angle if not! Let me know.

The first example is the same idea only expanded to use more (and different) scale degrees. Just focus on the exercise first, and make sure you can see the scale tones and name them. Then the advanced one will make sense. You got this!

Hey Tom. The chords I'm using in this key are G, Am, Bm, and C. So as I move that pattern through those chords the 3rd has to change for the minor chords. And eventually, when we get to that C it has a #4 in this key. I'm just doing the rest of the chords in the key after that to demo. TABs are on Patreon if you'd like to grab 'em! Let me know if that did not clear it up
