I have no real problems with the glossy animations of today (and some of it is just plain gorgeous) but I do wish there were some more "grittier" anime.
@lathyrusloon8 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Sometimes the gloss look really works. Sometimes it really, really doesn't. And sadly that's definitely in the gritty, horror and suspense genres. Have you seen Sword of the Stranger? came out in 2007 I think and it's fucking gorgeous. the animation is so fast and smooth, but still often dusty and dirty. the story is pretty simple but with a good amount of grit to it. Not a ton of dialogue either. It really took a show not tell approach that you don't see as often as we should.
@katherinesanderson89908 жыл бұрын
Lathy Loon No I haven't seen that and I avoid horror in general, I can take some horror elements but I'm practically allergic to horror movies/shows.
@lathyrusloon8 жыл бұрын
+Katherine Sanderson +Katherine Sanderson Aa that's too bad. Sword of the Stranger isn't a horror movie though. it falls closer into the gritty and suspenseful (kinda. well, not really suspenseful. not for me. but for some). I really, highly recommend it. It was a breath of fresh air. Dusty, bloody fresh air.

I first watched Akira in 1993. I was 13 at the time and came from watching Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny to seeing that. It blew my mind and I had never realized you could see such adult content in a cartoon. When we wanted more anime back then you had to find friends at school who also had very few anime on VHS and we would trade them for the weekend. That's also how I ended up seeing Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell. Damn the memories. Anime just isn't what it used to be.

It's interesting to hear what Anime you grew up with, Chris. I'm from the UK and when I was younger, I grew up with shows like Pokemon, Digimon, Moomin, Cardcaptors, Sonic X and I even used to own VHS tapes for a few of the Pokemon films, as well as the The Digimon Movie, considering how much I loved Digimon as a kid. For the past two years, I've matured in my love for Anime as an adult by watching all the Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki films, the films of Mamoru Hosoda and many other Japanese animated films and I'm a huge fan of them. I've even shown them to my mother and she loves them too!

0:30 May I offer a slight correction, Tonami wasn't "anime from the mid-90's onward", it was more the late 90's onward. Or 2000 onward, if you look at the anime phenomenon as truly taking off with "Gundam Wing" and "Tenchi Muyo" in the spring of 2000. But most people would say it truly took off on Toonami when TOM became the host and Toonami aired the Funimation dub of "Dragon Ball Z" in the Summer/Fall of 1999. Yeah, I know Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z both came to Toonami in 1998, but that was reruns of the old syndicated runs. 1999 (and 2000) was when things really took off for anime. The period of "Anime on VHS" as a phenomenon was from 1990 to 2000, with the biggest years going from 1993 to 1997, I feel.

Beautiful hand drawn cel animation is a True lost art. Here's definitely 4 of the most beautifully Hand Drawn CEL art work of Japanese movie Animations - 1) AKIRA, 2) HOKUTO NO KEN a.k.a. FIST OF THE NORTH STAR motion picture (1986), NINJA SCROLL movie, and 4) GHOST IN THE SHELL movie. Those are my TOP pass animated movies on the list of the most beautifully, and ABSOLUTELY best CEL ART work out there to date. Chris is so right about the way things were drawn way back then versus today's animation art work. Beautiful Hand-Drawn Cel Animation is Truly a LOST ART. It's a Shame and a damn Crime that those Animators got paid so LOW. :( Keep up the good work Chris, because someone has to make me SMILE. ;)

As someone who got into anime watching things like FMA(2003) and Tsubasa Chronicles, I was caught in what I felt like was right in the middle between the Japanimation era and the newer digitalized animation, with the digital becoming ever more popular. As such, I soon got introduced to the extremes of both sides of the spectrum pretty quickly. And I have to admit that as I continued to experience and learn about animation and Japanese animation specifically, I got more drawn into the hand-drawn style. To me now, I can appreciate how hard it was to animate everything hand-drawn vs. just digital, and the realistic perspective it brought to the show. At the same time, I can still acknowledge when a new, modern digitally animated series looks and just IS PLAIN GOOD. Steins Gate, FMA Brotherhood, and ERASED come to mind Also, I just wanna say that I feel like from 1995-2009, anime had reached it's high point with how many exceptional shows were coming out of Japan during those years. Shows that changed the anime community, and Japanese animation forever. To name a few: Neon Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Baccano, FMA(original), Death Note, Code Geass, FMA Brotherhood, Clannad..... like seriously, what the hell was Japan on back then? Whatever it was, could they please start doing it again, because that era was AMAZING.
@TMLCJLK8 жыл бұрын
I understand what Chris is talking about in the end and I see the same process in Western animations, but this may not be a bad thing. If we look back at the history of cinema, the quality of movie images went down when color pictures were introduced, but that was because the technology was beginning and the potential for it ended up much greater than the black and white one. So, yeah, the quality of the animated pictures today is not what it once were (in general), but we may be in a positive transition period.

+André Vila Franca What? You realize that the original film was made before the manga it was based on was finished, right? Otomo took time off midway through the manga to direct the movie. At the time, he had no idea what the ending of the manga would be, so he sort of came up with something. After the film, the manga ran for few years after the film was released. The anime is a different animal, and should be judged on it's own. If a full adaptation ever is realized, it needs to be a series. I don't think a single film would ever do it justice.

The one japanimation that got me hooked, I didn't see it on you list surprisingly, was "Vampire Hunter D." I could remember it like yesterday. One Saturday morning in 1989, I'm turning through my tv channels, somewhere around channel 31on my little 12" black & white, I saw this cartoon. After a couple of minutes I quickly realized this was no ordinary cartoon and I was glued to the screen until the end. That did it for me and I was hooked ever since. "Ninja Scroll" another one of my all time favorites, when I first watch it the title was "The Wind Ninja Chronicles." (yeah buddy I remember that :-). Funny thing is I never did watch "Akira." So, this Memorial Day weekend, that's on my list of things to watch. Great retro rewind, throwback, four years later. lol.

I got into anime back around 1998, early on in my high school days, and rented anything I could get my hands on (my parent's never checked what i was renting)... Akira is still one of my favorite movies of all time, and shows like Dragonball and Cowboy Bebop still remain some of the greatest TV shows ever made. A lot of the lesser known obscure anime from the 80's and early 90's were often on my radar back then, especially the darker sci-fi themed stuff. However, one anime that I never actually watched back then was Fist of the North Star. The strange part is that in 2005 I moved to Tokyo and landed a job as the apprentice/assistant illustrator for the creator of Fist of the North Star, Tetsuo Hara. I got to work on updated versions of the original manga, like the full color versions and I also worked heavily on the prequel manga, Fist of the Blue Sky. I still live in Tokyo, but after publishing my own one shot manga here, I stopped drawing mostly and started teaching while also running a vintage toy based website. None of this would have happened if it weren't for Dragonball, Ninja Scroll, Akira, Perfect Blue and Ghost in the Shell.

You know what you should watch? Neo Tokyo. It's just so bizarre, surreal and, I don't know, just weird, but soooooo good! The animation in that is top notch. Also talking about animation, if one of the things you like in anime is the animation itself, then Redline is a treat. Ridiculously well animated and action packed.

One of my favourite "japanimation" movies is Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, you should definitely check it out Chris, if you haven't already.

ramūnas strakauskas well, it's only 3 years younger than Perfect Blue. The main reason why I count it is because of the beautiful old-school animation in it. It feels at least 5 years older than it is.
@givemorexp8 жыл бұрын
that's true, Perfect Blue feels like is slightly ahead of it's time actually and Bloodlust is only anime related to Bloodborn in it's aesthetic style.

Great and honest review, Chris. We had early morning Anime shown in the UK at midnight every Saturday in the mid to late nineties on the Sci Fi channel. Animation from 81' - 95' personally for me has always been the best - Hand drawn, gritty, and realistic. Subscribed.

Hey Chris, You definitely have brought good points on the older, pain-staking hand-drawn style of anime and the adult themes/ideas that make these works relevant even to this day. One other work I would HIGHLY recommend is: Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal - (1999) While the show is fun, with the 2nd season being the highlight, this film really is the best of Kenshin's animated works and is in my top 5 anime productions. I know without a doubt it is my favorite anime original score in work I have seen to this day. The animation is stunning and what sets it apart is the political and cultural context it portrays so well while developing and maintaining a nuanced romance. The zeitgeist of a war-torn country and the effect it can have on a young assassin's developing psyche is fascinating and I don't think has been handled as well in any other anime work I've seen. It tackles larger ideas of a country's identity during a time of extreme violence when ideologies clash between isolationist-traditionalists and western-influenced modernists. I hope you check it out because based on these suggestions, I think you will love it. I'm glad you made this video as it will hopefully give a greater exposure to these films because they truly deserve the recognition.

Just posted this on your American Psycho Review but would love for you to see it, so I'm reposting here: Seeing that you had done a review of this film encouraged me to watch it, and I am extremely glad that I did! However, I can't help but think that you clearly have a lot more to say than what you were able to in this review without spoiling the plot completely, and so I think it would really merit a 20 minute long analysis, ideally on a similar wavelength of what you did for The Force Awakens because, of all the Star Wars VII material that was being pumped out on KZbin at the time, it was that video which really enlightened me. That's what's on my wish list anyway!

As a casual fan of anime (not the biggest, but not a newcomer either) what does this community think about Attack On Titan? I always heard that it was really great and while not up there with the best series of all time (Cowboy Bebop, Steins;Gate, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, etc.), it was quite awesome. Then, just recently, I got into a huge debate with someone on the internet who thought that it was awful and sucked and who said "everyone knows AOT is horrible". What gives? Is is great or does it suck? Thanks!

I liked it enough to get me through the whole thing, but it also had too much melodrama for my liking. And it really started to drag at some points. There were entire episodes that felt almost pointless to me.
@kurisucosmo79548 жыл бұрын
I'm not gonna say it was the worst series of all time, far from it. But it's also not the best, or even that good. It's not horrible, but I definitely wouldn't put it near the same level as Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist(2003), Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, or even Steins Gate. The story is very compelling, especially in the beginning. The hero's motivation is also compelling.... but only in the first 2 episodes. After that, there's just way too much death to make him or anybody else's sob stories special, so the characters all became bland, annoying, and I honestly couldn't remember most of their names except the 3 main characters. The animation is beautiful though, and the music is the best part. Of course, that is all just my opinion, but one shared by many others in the anime community. The majority of people who watch it treat it as the second coming of Jesus, and it's highly acclaimed by critics. But I would just tell you to watch it yourself and form your own opinion. Don't rely on what the masses of people say, and especially the critics.
@kurisucosmo79548 жыл бұрын
I totally agree on the melodrama and the pacing. Sure, I thought it was exciting at first and the drama really got me in the first episode. But after that, I felt like there was just way too much death for Eren's motivations/sob story to seem all that special. Certainly not enough to make me root for him

Hi Chris, Way to take it back to the 80's-90's, you are a man of fine taste, I just wanted to recommend one of my very favorite Anime of all time (next to Cowboy Bebop), 1985's Robotech, it's effing fantastic, a must see;) I have been supporting your work from the shadows for years now, much respect from Los Angeles. Keep up the good work man.

Switching from hand drawn cell animation to computer based work really changed Anime, good example is Gundam 0083 which is I think the last Gundam show that used hand drawn cell animation. That thing looks absolutely gorgeous, probably one of the best looking mecha animes out there. It also helps that it gives of huge Top Gun vibes with it's 80's as fuck opening themes. I really miss this style of animation in anime, it just looks so much more substantial in some weird way.
