I think that was just part of the act. People who are very adept at holding their breath can go a good deal longer than 5 minutes. Having his head in water is actually helpful to the breath-holding, and he likely prepared by hyperventilating pure oxygen ahead of the performance to clear CO2 from his lungs. It is no less impressive, I just don't think he was ever in real danger or that close to his limit.

5 minutes is not worth mentioning. The longest time breath held voluntarily (male) is 24 min 3.45 secs and was achieved by Aleix Segura Vendrell (Spain), in Barcelona, Spain, on 28 February 2016. Aleix Segura Vendrell is a professional freediver. The attempt took place at the 17th Mediterranean Dive Show.

Dude has got to have gills because, holy crap! That is some incredible breath and lung control. It's really dangerous because you're basically asphyxiating your body and brain. It was really good though. But he has to be part fish, like that movie The Shape Of Water LOL.
