I skated hard like 8yrs old thru maybe 13, or 14? Football took over my life, and instead of repping front shuvs down my local highschools staircases, I was repping deadlifts. I played left guard/tight end, and defensive end/noseguard. After an injury and a consistent 4800 calorie diet, I got up to 335lbs at 18 years old. Type 2 diabetes and heart/stomach issues and my own stubborn ass lost 95 lbs in 9 months. Now, at going on 27, net loss of 135lbs, I'm seeing 200 on the scale for genuinely the first time since I was in 3rd, maybe 4th grade. I've been back on my board for 3 years and some change. Nothing is like I was when I was young, and that's okay. I'm back on the board again. I've found a love for Hill bombing. Easier on the knees.. most of the time lol. Do what you love, and what makes you happy. People progress, maybe the kickflip for you 10 years ago, is that long hard carve at 30 mph now.

32 years young. Started skating at 16 stopped at 25 when I moved to MN and basically started getting my life together(Financially.) 31st birthday in April 2020 I started back up; the first beginning of the year was brutal. This was a big realization of my health and why I've changed my habits for the better. Happiest I've been in years. Strangely enough, I'm actually learning new tricks, grinding flatbars - something I've never done even when I was younger and too scared to do. My biggest problem starting again was muscle soreness. Specifically in the hips. Before, even 5-10 mins in to a session my "Sartorius muscle" would be on fire. So, if I've learned one thing from skateboarding that I never knew before is that a lot of skating comes from the hips. Lot's of dynamic movements involved in skateboarding and the hips are very much involved in that. So my tip would be to do lot's of hip stretches and exercises to strengthen them. Overall I'm now more confident, level headed, a little more consistent, and I don't get frustrated like I did when I was younger. Like they say, "you're only as young as you feel." A few foam rolls, yoga, and diet changes later, that feeling finally came back. Never stop pushing. Peace and love!
@PHeMoX
@PHeMoX 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think any soreness in the sartorius muscle or any muscle for that matter will always be about riding with simple too much tension in your body. Those muscles should be fairly relaxed at all times. And while I get what you are saying about feeling like the hips do a lot of stuff in skating, it should be more in the shoulders actually. Of course, ultimately a lot of muscles come into play, but I will have to politely disagree that skaters should stretch a lot. Stretching does not strengthen muscles. It lengthens them. And for quick snappy movements, you actually need short muscles that can handle some tension. It's better to do a warm-up routine of sorts and make sure you're not trying to do snappy movements with cold muscles. I always ride around a bit, pop a few ollies, shoves, way before ever trying more complicated stuff.
@ANDREW-nz9sf
@ANDREW-nz9sf 2 жыл бұрын
@@PHeMoX agreed. That's something I've learned about health overall as well. That sometimes when a part of your body hurts often can be a sign of a weaker/tense muscle within that group structure, compromising the muscle that's sore and making it work harder than it should. I forget which muscle was hurting before, but I remember being directed to hip strengthening (maybe my back?) Anyways, are you saying not to stretch in order to keep the muscles short for snappier movements? Cause I think I've heard that before too and I would have agree with that if so. I used to stretch before a session and wouldn't have as good of a time skating as apposed to just doing a few basic warm up tricks without the stretching.

You’re spot on with all of this. I’m 32 in a couple of weeks and lost a lot of skating time in my 20’s due to work. Picked it up again last year and I feel much more confident in my tricks than when I was 18/19. I think this is from knowing that I can’t constantly throw myself downstairs for hours on end and just landing the trick is better than repeatedly kicking away. Knowing your limits of what you can do, what you can try and what you should avoid is really important. I also spend a lot of time repeating tricks on flat until they are near perfect to move them to stairs as I want to get it as quick as I can. Muscle aches are really bad even from a couple of hours of flat ground though but planning your days to go out makes it more exciting. Try to go every third day instead of every other day has been working

As someone who came back after 10 years of not skating, it WAS like riding a bike. My legs remembered the kickflip motion, but it took a couple days to get it back solid, I was able to land one within a couple hours of coming back. But there are five tips I follow when skating in my mid 30s which is stretch, stretch, stretch, stretch, and stretch. Don't worry, bud, you'll get it when you're older.

As an older skater myself, who got 'back into it' (although to be fair, I really only ever could do an ollie in the 90s), the key to continue skating at older age will definitely be trying to find small stuff you can progress at. Try to learn something new every skate session, no matter how easy the trick was. And wear pads and a helmet if you need to, as you won't be as fearless as you were as a kid. It will help so much, you wouldn't believe it. Also, it is okey to discover you may feel like you will not ever land certain tricks, it shouldn't matter. And who knows, maybe you unlock those tricks later anyway, as 90% of any trick will be the confidence knowing you can land it, combined with 10% muscle memory doing the right thing, the latter which accounts to 90% chance of success of making the trick. I will be 37 years old in less than a month.

Plus with KZbin it’s much easier to learn new tricks compared to when I was younger and it was basically figure it out yourself. Wish I never quit!

When I was about 19 or 20 I found myself no longer skating. It wasn’t so much of a “yeah I quit” but more so I just became buried in adult life, responsibilities, and working a job that after a while, skating was no longer in my life…even though I never actually stopped buying skate shoes lol! A Bad car accident came about when I was 23 that kept me from working for 2 years and in that time off a began to miss skateboarding. I started working again right before turning 26…finally back from my injuries both physically and mentally/emotionally. My desire to get back into skating over the 8 months or so back into life became so strong that on my 27th birthday I was just like, “yup! fuck this! we getting back into the game!” …and I did! Went out and got myself fully kitted up that day! …and no, it was not the same as before. 7 to 8 years off and I literally have had to re-learn seemingly everything! I mean, hell, it took me a few days just to do a single kickflip! …but damn did it feel good to get one again when I did hahahaha! My birthday is coming around the corner again on the 24th of September. I’m still not quite where I was back in the day in terms of ability but I’m hella close and have even learned some new tricks that I didn’t know back then. Super exciting! I go to my local park everyday at lunch and is a part of my daily routine…although trying to hide minor injuries like bloody arms or limping when back into work has been a bit fun…especially considering it’s a hospital of all places! 🤣 (part of their IT staff) It feels so great to be back and not just re-learning tricks but also progressing further beyond where I was back before. My goal is to be able to big spin heel by my birthday…a dream trick I never thought I’d be able to do and I’m actually getting close these days! Shoutout to everyone out there who’s getting back into skating and I hope you are finding happiness in life through it! 😎👊 …fun fact, the last shoes I skated when I was younger was a pair of éS Accels (OGs) and the first pair of shoes I skated in when getting back into skating was a new pair of èS Accel OGs 😅 I remember being so bummed when éS went out of business! Just imagine my excitement when I was looking for a pair of shoes to skate in again and learned that éS had been brought back from the grave and was still making the OG Accel!! Shoutout to éS too for making a great comeback in the industry! M U U U O W 😎

I'm 28 and got back into skating after probably 5 years of not activly skating. I love skating but was never good at it. Don't have the talent but I also didn't understand how much work ethic means. I have a few young friends who still skate and they made a little team video. That hyped me up so much that I picked up a board again. The only differnce now was that I understand how much work ethic can bring to you. I was running for a while,going to the gym and I learned what kind of results discipline and reperation can bring. So now I just apply that to skateboarding. In about 3 months of skating again,I just filmed the best line of my life. I was also never able to skate the park as good as I can right now. And it all comes from being on your board as much as possible and actually skating hard when you are out there. I would even do real training sessions on my own. 100 kiclfips,100 pop shove its,or I would just do every flip trick I can but twice. I would do ollies over benches over and over again just so I can perfect my ollie. And skating got a lot more fun. Then when I go to the skatepark to skate with homies,everything is more fun since I'm way more comforable on the board. So yeah...just work for it and skate as much as possible. That's literarly it.

June is seriously really low key good! That pop shove late flip! But on being old and picking up skating, I picked it back up at 40 a couple of years ago and it was a work out during the first lockdown! 30mins a day while my baby napped, trying to ollie, shuvit and kick flip took me a good month but I got it! One thing essential is stretching! A pay for it the next day when I don't stretch, especially my hip flexors. But nothing feels as good as landing a kickflip 20 years later or nose sliding a curb or 50-50'ing a ledge!

I skated from 6th grade till 9th and stopped due to sports, girls, and parties and so on. At the time I was always down to do stairs and gaps and try new things. But I finally decided to get back on a board at 28. Somethings came back quick but definitely took my nice slams on the way. One big difference is that I take a lot longer to learn tricks due to the fact that I don’t want to injure myself because I can’t miss work lol. However, I still have a lot of fun with the simple or easy stuff I do. Also stopped trying to do tricks over gaps or stair sets. I’m too old to be trying that again 😆

I’m relating to this hard, use to be decent rode for active for like 10 years , haven’t skated in like 4 years. Skated last week and first day back on messed up my back . Yeahhhhh I’m getting old I guess lol

Agree with everything you said except how you say it's not working out lol. I started skating again in my 30s (I'm 31) after a 6 year hiatus and the first thing I noticed was how out of breath I was the whole time lol. Cardio like crazy I burned so many calories. I mean for sure it's not lifting but for cardio? It's great.

i started skating again at 21 after not touching a board since i was 9-10 and it is a frustrating process but i’ve finally sorta got rolling ollies down

27 year hiatus. Never stepped on a board during that time. Manage your expectations and for the love of God, put on a f*$#&@4 helmet. I don't think I ever fell out of love with it...it's just life. I am SO incredibly happy to have started riding again.

35, been skating off and on since 14 when I shattered my left leg. Still can do a lot of the same flat ground stuff I used to. Definitely not trying anything crazy anymore though.

What's up all my fellow mid-life skaters in the comments!? I decided to start skating again cause depression which was super exacerbated by 2020. The coolest thing about skating now days compared to when I was younger is all the skate parks around. I decided to not really get back into street skating as much but to learn transition cause that wasn't something that was readily available back in the day, as compared to now. Also, what length laces should I get for Etnies maranas?
@christianflores
@christianflores 2 жыл бұрын
That’s dope dude! Have fun skating transitions. I try sometimes but I get freaked out to just 50 fakie. Lol. And 60 should be good for the laces 🚀👊.

Late 20's early 30's? Sheeze, I'm 43 and still skating, but yes injuries and set backs have caused me to be a lot more cautious and I'll admit I don't skate nearly like I use too, and I think I'm okay with that(like I have a choice).

31 years-old me started to skate again around the beginning of our C. o.v.id bullshit years ago. I had a break for 8 years, before that I was into it around 9 years, but honestly I´m not back on my level again yet ;/ :P Buuut flatground is nearly there 90% skating parks is rather annoyingly
