I just refreshed hoping to see more Unraid content. Great uploads ! Liked and subscribed ! I struggle with choosing truenas over Unraid, truenas has always worked for me and the speed is insane, but Unraid is just so simple to use.

I love UnRAID. I started with FreeNAS (precursor to TrueNAS) and ultimately decided to go with UnRAID. The biggest deciding factor for me was the ease of expandability. If I wanted to add a drive on FreeNAS, I had to rebuild everything. If I wanted to increase a drive size, same thing, had to start over. If you didn't have the resources to create your entire NAS at the time of building on FreeNAS, then you had to go through a lot more pain than UnRAID. In addition, I thought the FreeBSD jails were a pain to deal with compared to UnRAID's use of dockers in Linux. This maybe all a moot point now that TrueNAS has a Linux version (Scale), but I left for UnRAID and have been REALLY happy with my decision since and haven't looked back or regretted it.

Fully agree! Was looking into TrueNAS but the expandability threw me away and I bought UnRaid instead.

As user of both systems, both are good. Truenas seem to be more advanced where Unraid is more oriented to home. But where unraid shines is support, not toxic community, and ease of use. Deploy of container , installing plugins is much simpler on unraid for example

Hi Christian, as you've build your first Storage Server with truenas, you have already inspired me to do the same. I also got the same 24 bay enclosure as you bought back then with a 24 port hba card. But instead of going with truenas, I already went with Unraid. Thanks for the video and the new beta features. These are also new to me :)

@@christianlempa haha I feeling honored, but no I just had known that I don't need the performance of an Truenas Pool. I am most of the time the only user on my storage and the throughput is enough for a single user. But I missing the security of bitroot protection. Viele Grüße und danke für deine Videos. Habe da schon so einiges für mein Server übernommen (authentik, traefik, etc.) und meiner Meinung mein favorite KZbin channel 😀.

USB boot drive is automatically and regularly backed up locally and/or to the cloud if you set up Unraid with their Connect plugin. It takes mere seconds to restore a backup to a new USB key with the Unraid image tool (available for ALL OSes) and a few seconds more to transfer the license - which can be done online immediately when you boot your restored backup.

This probably covers my last hesitation with Unraid. I just want something as simple and flexible as Drivepool, and Unraid probably is it. Thanks! I’ll probable just wait for ZFS to come out fully stable on Unraid so that I can ZFS a small set of disks for critical stuff and throw the rest into simple pooled spinners.

You didn't mention the 'Mover' function. You should have a fast NVME ZFS Cache pool and then Mover will move data to the Unraid array disks after hours.

I've just started my free trail of UNRAID yesterday and Im loving it. I personally choose UNRAID because of the ability to use different size disks (So I dont have to shell out £££ for a bunch of 12tb drives all at once). My Rasp Pi 4 OMV NAS kept falling over (It was only ever something to get me going) so I bit the bullet and jist grabbed a few bits of cheap random hardware to get me started for now. Maybe grabbing old disks off friends and family wasnt the greatest idea though as EVERY disk in the array has read errors and also I slmehow managed to grab a dodgy network cable from the drawer that kept dropping the network and was running at 100mbs. Cable is sorted and Ive dumped some random (none critical) data on the drives and ill go get myself some decent big drives from CEX tomorrow (second hand but have a 2 year warranty). It will be gold to learn how to swap out the disks at this point rather than panic when its full of all the familes photos, videos and drone footage.

Also don’t forgot that using an Unraid Array with SSD is not recommended as they don’t support Auto Trim. If you want to use SSD then use a cache pool which supports the Auto Trim feature.

It's not just a good NAS OS, it's a great services OS. I use it instead of TrueNAS for NAS. I use it instead of Portainer for Docker containers. Instead of Proxmox for LXC and VM. Four production systems currently running with completely different hardware and for different purposes, all based on Unraid on the back end. 2.5G and 10G networking. Just make sure you're using Unraid version 7 and newer. Remember that you can also expand the capabilities with plugins and containers, so CA certificates (as an example) is super easy and there are a lot of ways to do it. ACME, Reverse Proxy, Certbot, etc.

Thanks for the tutorial. As an Unraid newbie, it gave me some confidence to give it a try. My setup will be a Beelink EQR6 mini PC (Ryzen 5 6600H 24GB) with two 4TB NVMe SSDs. I'll primarily be using the NAS for Time Machine backups for two different Macs (each with 1TB SSDs), and a backup for about 125GB of family photos (currently stored only in iCloud Photos). Our combined (current) storage is less than 1TB in total. My question is: should I use one of the 4TB SSDs as a parity drive? Or is it overkill to backup a backup? Maybe I'll be better served by keeping the full 8TB available for the future? (Although I think even 4TB would last a long time). I'm budgeting about 1TB for each Mac's Time Machine backups (although I think that's very generous). And zfs vs xfs? Still getting my head around the Unraid array and storage pools etc. I like the fact that booting from the USB flash drive frees-up both SSDs for storage. And I prefer tinkering with technology rather than going for a turnkey solution (e.g. Synology). I will probably try Plex and other apps, but backup/storage is definitely the main priority.

If anyone has experience with this and QNAP, I have a question: I have a rack mounted server with 6 120(ish)GB SATA SSD drives in a raid5, currently running Proxmox so I can learn about all this stuff, and I also have a QNAP NAS currently housing 2x 1TB NVMe M.2 drvies, 2x 1TB SATA SSD drives, and 6x SATA drives, but I think it has capacity for 1 more NVMe and 1 more SATA SSD plus 2 more regular SATA spindle drives ... but I do use the QNAP QSYNC which is nice and user friendly ... does UNRAID have something similar for replacing QSYNC or would Proxmox handle this aspect? ... and if I were to replace QTS with UNRAID, would it be something like the following: use 2 mirrored drives (RAID0) on server to run Proxmox, use USB into QNAP NAS to run UNRAID, and then Proxmox can connect an UNRAID virtual machine with the other 4 SATA drives in a cluster with the remote UNRAID on the QNAP NAS, and then either UNRAID or Proxmox replaces QSYNC functionality ..? ... or have I totally misunderstood something here?

but what features does unraid have over truenas (that cost zero to use) to be a substantial improvement over it? Truenas does everything i need, so that is why i never bothered looking at unraid. Not to say it's bad cauz u have to pay for a license (nothing wrong with charging to make profit and pay the bills). But it still doesnt change the fact truenas is free to use for homelabbers, and it's plenty good enough for most people. That nitpick aside, either way, i doubt you can go wrong with either one. They both use ZFS and are serious about keeping your data as safe/reliable as possible. And they have the least amount of bloat compared to other alternatives.

1 : performance on Unraid is only an issue when writing in Array when Turbo Write is not active. In others cases (that is almost all cases), performance is almost the same. 2 : on unraid array, if you loses more disks than the number of parity drive, you don't lose all your data, that's more important than performance. 3 : as said on 1 performance, and as Array is not mandatory anymore, you can have 0 issues with performance, just use btrfs or zfs pools. 4 : Unraid Array as a big advantage, you don't have to spin up all your drives when you want to read or write into one of them. 5 : NAS review should start with storage features, then you can choose between performance and services (but we are not all looking for performance), especially when the review OS has a specific way to do storage. 6 : in Unraid array allow you to add the number of disks you want, with different sizes, in a minutes. Try to get that on TrueNAS... 7 : Unraid is NOT just a NAS, it's a complete plateform with Storage (both raid and array), Docker, VM, LXC (with plugin), and much more.
