Now I have lost respect for him because: A year ago, he exposed his ex-wife's weaknesses in an ugly way, and in doing so, he publicly shamed his daughters, whom he loves. Now he talks bad about CP and without context he shows a text that "confirms" his words. If he is so zealous for Jesus, he can do as Jesus teaches: Privately warn your brother about the mistakes he is making and explain the scriptures to him. By publicly shaming CP, Sam is throwing manure on his own head.

The fact is that throughout history most Christians could not read. At masses, they listened to the Bible and "read" it from pictures and statues, thus maintaining their faith in Jesus, which produced extraordinary results. It is still the same for me. The cross I carry reminds me, in the noise of everyday life, of Jesus' sacrifice for me and his teaching - I do not worship the cross I carry but I worship Jesus, the living, loving eternal, triune God.

When your relationship with God deepens, you don't really need this image anymore because you are always with God, but not all Christians reach this stage. Images (pictures, statuettes) are just a tool to help you remember God, like a miniature booklet with the most important passages from the Bible. I am Catholic and I have never bowed before images...but with every image (in my country churches are built on almost every hill, there were crucifixes on almost every intersection) I remembered that God is above my desires and sees and knows how I feel. And during the communist persecution, I wore a cross around my neck because the communists persecuted this sign and I wanted to show who I belonged to. Signs of Christianity (churches, paintings, statues, mosaics...) were very encouraging for Christianity, so today communists (China), liberals (France, Germany, Canada...) burn and destroy them, Muslim countries persecute and completely ban them . They remind them too much of the one true God, Jesus Christ.

Part of being a missionary for a lot of missionaries is not being able to attend church. The lands of Islam have Christian missionaries who need to stay secret. Belonging to a church denomination is irrelevant where there are none. That said, missionaries do need guidance and correction from time to time. Being open to Christian brothers and sisters is needed. Paul makes that clear. I do appreciate when CP opens up to Christian callers.

Jesus made the gospel to be simple. The majority of his disciples were common ordinary men. They were not scholars. The Pharisees were scholars. The gospel is simple. The scholar has no advantage over the uneducated. Jesus made it perfect in that sense. Follow Jesus and rebuke all who oppose His perfect word, including those who use it to justify their rituals, symbols, idols, etc. Rebuke the man who preaches falsity. If he does not accept and repent after several attempts, he is to be pushed aside. Christians are going to churches and forming allegiances with the clergies to the point where they defend their heresy, and they convince themselves to stay in that building, with that pastor, with that wickedness, etc. WE ARE THE CHURCH. "Where two or more..." The point has always been fellowship to encourage believers. Not legalistic rituals. Not allegiances to men in power. Always be humble. Always seek truth. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS ENOUGH. Bless you, CP

​@@DMKMOYEE-yw6rw Personally, for me icons are like when I look at a someone's picture or video, seeing it reminds me of the person it depicts and the rest of what they said or did. It helps me when I pray, seeing an icon makes me more focused to give honor to the subject if it is a Saint for example, or if it is Christ himself to worship him. The honor you give to an image goes to the prototype (to paraphrase St Basil), kinda like singing a national anthem is honoring the country the anthem belongs to. In general, you could also add that icons are means of instruction of how to act, they present Holy Revelation in a more universal language (because it shows more than it tells, I can understand an Icon made by a Japanese person easier than I can read the Scriptures in Japanese). Furthermore, I don't think one should not have images when worshiping or venerating, otherwise we would have to throw the Holy Scriptures as well since they are full of them, as letters are technically images (even if one denies that for roman languages like English, it would still be ridiculous to say that it is wrong to have a Bible in a language that is pictographic like Mandarin Chinese). That is the quick version, if you want to read a more developed case for the veneration of icons you can read the defense given by St John of Damascus (I mentioned his name in the chat stream) who gives not only many quotes from the Scripture (not limited to Exodus BTW) but also of Church Fathers like St Dionysius the Areopagite (the same as the one found in the book of Acts) and his letters to St John the Apostle. If that is not enough, I can also point to the lengthy discussions the entire Church had at the Seventh Ecumenical Council, which not only approved the practice, but declared the Iconoclastic movement to be heretical - and if the gates of Hades would not prevail against the Church as our Lord promised (Mark 16:18), then essentially I don't think it would be a problem to honor the saints and worship our savior Jesus Christ with the help of Icons.
