Woah, has it really been a month already?? I've been out hiking, camping and living the van life...and doing my best to escape wildfire smoke and heat waves. Here’s what summer in Montana has been like, grizzly bears included. Spoiler alert - Montana is ridiculously beautiful.

Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 29K miles*

I’m 70. It took me decades to acquire the wisdom to “go with the flow” and recognize the serendipity and synchronicities that come with this mindset. Keep it up! Think less, flow more.

@O K you are most of the time always in some power to change it... even if it means to make unpopular choices, because yes, you live only once if that is what you meant, more choices usually come by, but we feel helpless to grab them, that's where the harder choices should happen... i personally didn't make the best choices for my life, but ain't the worst

When you find yourself camping in bear country, please keep a small bottle of ammonia with you. Put a couple small plastic containers of ammonia on the down wind side of your camp. Bears always come in from the down wind side so they can smell what they are walking into. If the first thing they smell is ammonia, they are not gonna visit you :)

Christian you are an amazing inspiration. You keep me motivated. Although I am old, I have been arranging my life now for the past three years to leave it all behind and hit the open road. Your videos keep me focused on the reality of that journey and keep me pushing for the day when the possessions are gone, the goodbyes have been said, and the wheels on the Airstream start rolling. The life you have chosen is not easy but the humanness you put into these videos makes and keeps it real for those of us waiting to follow in your footsteps.

So worth the wait Christian. You captured so much beauty and majesty. I live in NYC and fear I may never get to see something like this, but I like to know these places still exist. So I always look forward to your captures. I also loved your editing and choice of music in this one. In particular, my personal favorite was the music that started at 3:53 that segued into the waterfall capture in slow motion. The combination of that music with the water just rushing down was truly captivating. It was trancelike. I rewound and watched it several times. You used the same music again at 13:28 and it segued into the slow motion scene of you all running into the lake. Just wonderful. Thank you for sharing.

@@ChristianSchaffer It was a pretty cool but tough job! I was a Wilderness ranger in the wilds of Idaho, but living in Montana...unbelievable solitude and scenery either way. It was fun to represent and work on behalf of Forest Service lands, but job insecurity for half a year eventually got to me. I bet you'd be excellent a park ranger- even as an introvert! 😂 However I'd say you chose a career path that fits you perfectly, in the end.

Christian you may not be able to film for KZbin as you would like, but when you do….oh wow! You capture perfectly the absolute beauty of the surrounding landscape and I enjoy your content thank you. Seeing the beauty of the mountainous landscape…..made me miss my old stomping grounds of the Sierras! I miss the camping, the snow skiing and the white water rafting down the American River. Don’t get me wrong….the white sugar sand beaches of PCB Fl. where I reside today are beautiful too. But to be honest…..I’d take my mountain landscape anytime over any beach! The beach to me represents a short get away….a vacation. Whereas, the mountains represent life both in terms of the serenity and in terms of the hardships! At least too me! Again Christian thank you!

Added to my bucket list. I'm 56 and hope to travel this summer, I work from home but getting away isn't easy with a sick family member.
