going drawer by drawer is definitely easier to do than one big de-clutter. Especially when you have SO MUCH SHIT. Trying everything on is also a big help. You can think you still like something but when you actually put it on you hate it, or it doesn't fit anymore. I do this in Spring to know what I have for the coming warm weather and then again in Autumn. One in, one out has also helped me.

I don't want to feel like I own more things than I,can realistically take care of/wear/use, and I am definitely at that point. I've already given up my shopping habit for months now, and I started selling some of my new with tags clothing. 😓
@Pinkbear209 ай бұрын
One thing I notice with myself is if I am constantly shopping I always feel like I don't have enough or I am always lacking. If I stop shopping and start using my stuff I feel like I have excess and can not use everything in a year's time. Excessive hoarding is a psychological problem but so is excessive decluttering. A decade ago, I actually had to receive health services for excessive decluttering and was diagnosed with OCD. Both extremes are bad. I am now in a healthier place where I don't feel like I have to throw everything out and also where I am not constantly shopping.

Same! If you're in "buying-mode" then nothing will feel enough. But ever since I took a step back and indexed my wardrobe on Indyx (after seeing Christina's video with them) I realized I have 120+ pieces in my collection (WITHOUT activewear or loungewear) and plenty of room to create outfits. I recognized a few gaps in my pieces that I plan to cover, but I don't think I need more than another 10 KEY items to have a complete wardrobe - and even those aren't "mandatory" to buy (no matter what a fashion bloggers might say). So keep styling over buying, people!

After my father-in-law passed away, a number of things ended up at our house and before it was over with, our garage was packed to exploding. My husband started talking about us building a shed in our backyard. I balked. And I'm so glad I did. We spent two days cleaning up the garage, and not only were we able to put everything away once we organized and threw out a bunch of stuff, we had space to spare. I think this is one of your best videos yet.

Oh yes, my husband’s grandmother recently went into a institution for elderly people and a lot of her stuff came to us. I try to sell some to help her out, use things up (like spices) but it’s overwhelming. And she already downsized a lot! She downsized 6 years ago and gave a lot of things away. Still I am not used to having two or three extra boxes around. If my parents-in-law would suddenly pass away the stuff would be terrifying… And because of emotional attachment it might be difficult to throw things out. I am in a very different situation with little kids, but I already decided that I will care for what to do with my stuff before my kids will be in charge.

I couln't agree more. Seeing you slip off your Birkenstocks reminded me about my acquisition problem. I found a pair of Birkenstocks whilst on holiday in Spain in January AND, they were in the sale and they fit me Cinderalla style. I was thrilled. They are silver and cool. So as soon as I got back from my holiday I thought "Oooh I love these sandals so much I am going to buy another pair" and I went coco loco online browsing styles, colours, special offers and then ... I got a grip of myself and thought "the silver ones are perfect, they'll last and I'll wear them everyday - I don't NEED anymore". GREAT vid today!! Ok, so our litmus test is: will guests feel this room is for them when they visit? Then I know my stuff is under control. We have a small log home. We love it, and when we moved from our other house (of 16 years) we downsized /suddenly didn't have: 1000 sf, a 2 car garage, a full basement to keep stuff in. We got rid of soooo much and it felt so good. After that, we didn't want anything to be truly uselessly stored. We have one closet we share and it's half full. We keep the top drawers of our dresser empty for guests. We have one closet under the stairs, which is well organized for seasonal decorations, which i can easily get out and put back. We kept our books to three antique bookshelves from my childhood home. It feels so good to have NOTHING hidden in closets, cabinets or any other storage. The master suite is downstairs, and we want guests to stay here when they come, because it's the nicest room . SO...we keep our bedroom in such a way that it is easy to move our toiletries and clothes out of our drawers (bathroom too) into the other bathroom and room upstairs via little baskets and laundry basket, so it will be theirs (so they won't feel like they are in "our" room). Keeps things quickly categorized to "is this worth moving back and forth? will it fit in the other room?" Works for us🥰

Your videos always make me want to sort and do more decluttering lol. I ultimately do believe that overshopping is reflective of my mental health or identity crisis mode...I wondered though, maybe if you could speak to having a different style of 'clutter' or 'collecting' than your partner. My partner is very very minimalist. Before meeting me, he only used one bar of soap for everything, but he gets stressed out by my clutter, but we live in a very small apartment. So, yeah, I wonder if maybe a future video could be about couple stuff...what is a good compromise etc.

These are such good checkpoints for recognizing clutter! I totally agree that buying organizers before attempting decluttering is a mistake, recently I wanted to buy a bunch of photo boxes for old family photos. But when i actually looked through them, nearly 2/3 were duplicates or just terrible shots. So I ended up needing two containers instead of 6 or 7. A few other thoughts that guide me are: Am I avoiding projects or cleaning that I want to do because I have to work around my stuff? Am I embarrassed or ashamed to let my friends see this space? How annoying would the process be if I had to move shortly?

Just found your channel, great content, thanks! ❤️I recently started a decluttering and shedding process. Our house is a mess (3 kids, 2 cats, we both work fulltime). We tend to hang on to things and our children are fastpaced and changes activities freequently. I’m not a minimalist, I’m more of a ”naturalhistorical museum person”, but i can’t relax in this mess, so it’s time. Stylewise I’m lost right now, I’ve been wearing the same uniform for about 12 years, and it worked well for me to this point, now these clothes are worn, dated or ”too young”. I need to shed, and I’ve done it before, but it is harder now with less time/energy and more obligations. I made some panic-purchases, that made me understand that I really need to keep focused and plan my purchases well, as I’m also on a budget. I will try to make a wishlist and find out my ”3 words” next. I hang on to favouriteclothes that are in really bad condition, I guess I’m overcompensating for my panic-purchases with these zombieclothes.

Easier decluttering - NOTE first 4 steps involve NO decluttering - and even if you declutter nothing, your stuff situation will improve by doing this. - choose a category (clothing, books, etc) (I wil use clothing as example) - sort items into sub categories that are appropriate for you - work vs non-work, summer vs winter, short sleeve tops vs long sleeve tops, etc. Keep sorting into sub-categories until you have a solid picture and grasp of what you have. - quickly put items in each category in order of most loved/used to least loved/used. Don't angst over it, you just want a rough order of each sub-category. - For clothing, kitchen, etc categories - pull out what I call a baseline - what you physically need for a one week to two weeks period to just function (if you house was being remodeled and you needed to live somewhere else for a month, what would you need). - Now you should have a good grasp of what you have and so you can start to think about sorting out what you want to keep vs what you want to pass on. During the sorting process your mind will already start thinking about what to keep/declutter because that is your motivation to do this process.

I have decluttered my closet. But I need to find somewhere to keep my handbags. I put them on the shelf in our closet. But I need to put my jeans on the shelf. I can’t put them in the guest room closet. My granddaughters will find them and ask if they can have them. I did just order some jeans, which I’m going to return. I had a small chest of drawers in my bedroom. And most of the jeans in there fit me. So I’m taking the other pairs back. I don’t need them. So I am doing better with my clothes. And that’s my worst vice. My next place to declutter is my laundry room. We do live in a small house. And that’s where everything that doesn’t have a home goes. But it won’t be there after this month. My husband actually cleaned some stuff out of the office. Now I’m going to get rid of things in there too. If I could get rid of him. Hmmm....so this description reminds me so much of how I've heard people talk about insulin resistance and how it develops into non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. I watch a lot of keto videos too. If there is too much sugar to process, it gets stored as fat and we get a belly. I wonder...back in the day before fast food, people weren't as heavy, didn't have as many clothes, either... I used to really be interested in 100-year-old houses and there were no closets. There might be a row of hooks on a bedroom wall, where you'd hang up your three garments overnight, but no closets. A closet was maybe a "wardrobe" piece of furniture you could move from place to place if need be. All in all, we have too much sugar, too much weight, too much stuff, and I wonder if it's related somehow.

I am petite 5’0 but i weight the heaviest I have in my adult life. 150 pounds. That’s a lot for my height. Before the illness and the steroid injections (for medical treatments) sat at 108/118 which was normal for me. That means I’m up 40+ pounds and I’m his smallest patient. I’m overweight. Not morbidly obese. But to be a bit over weight and be called small. Wow 🤯 that was an eye opener. Sorry for lengthy message

I tried to download your decluttering list twice and got nothing: nothing in my download file and nothing in my email. What am I doing wrong?

ok damn. you didn't have to call me out like you did. hahaha jk. i am definitely overwhelmed and know i need to declutter, but i've allocated a couple hours a week to decluttering. I can't do it all at once or it will seem too daunting.

Hi. I really love your content and have been watching you for years. I think Huberman can be good for a lot of things: motivation and trying to be healthy. But given his recent anti-vaccine stance, I hope you take his advice with a grain of salt. You are obviously smart enough to be able to weed out the bad from the good but I worry about seeing him get accolades without a healthy counter balance. xo.
