It is encouraging that people will be listening to this hundreds of years from today and will still be moved by the beauty of the age in which Praetorius composed.

This was the kind of music that Lutherans once had in their services. They continued to call the Eucharist the "Mass". Lutheran priests wore vestments. You still see this in Europe but in the US for the most part, the glorious music of Praetorius (and Bach, and other Lutheran composers) has given way to guitar twangs, pop rock hymns, touchy-feely liturgies, and power point presentations shared on huge screens.

Sadly, you are right. It takes time and effort to seek out and find the right church that meets one's needs and fills the soul. When that's not possible, such as now in the midst of the pandemic, I really thank God for the internet and the good people who post glorious music on it.

Sadly true in many places. However, I have found many Lutheran congregations where the Eucharistic liturgy is celebrated with heart-felt joy and with deep reverence for the mass. I feel blessed to have been part of congregations in which both pastors and musicians have very aware of the liturgical and musical riches of the Lutheran tradition.

So, who was Praetorius? My research says: he was a German composer, organist, and music theorist whose real name was Michael Schultze. One of the most versatile composers of his time, he was particularly significant with musical forms based on Protestant hymns. His compositions show the influence of Italian composers. Many of Praetorius' choral works were scored for several mini-choirs in several locations in the church for multi-phonic effect. This music shows that arrangement well.

I've known this recording in Archiv since the 60s - It was an LP in their Renaissance series (still have it!). Get the Praetorius dances, too. Both are taste changers and started the early music revolution. Music (in general) has fallen since the Renaissance Baroque eras. Where have all the melodies gone? Praetorius wrote over 1,300 choral works - some over 20 parts. His works including Terpsichore (the hundreds of dances) take many feet of shelf space in the library.

There were numerous composers surnamed Praetorius, the most remembered and revered being Hieronymus (1560-1629) and Michael (1571-1621). They were not related. Hieronymus is best known for his many choral and organ works, including the popular motet "Joseph lieber, Joseph mein"; and Michael for his "Terpsichore" dance pieces, as well as the magnificent motet "Psalite". See Chanticleer's recordings of both of these motets, as well as the instrumental/choral version of the "Joseph lieber" motet presented on "A Nonesuch Christmas". Music for the ages!

I'm fortunate enough to be a part of a congregation which sings most of its Liturgy and weekly through the entirety of successive communion circles. Perhaps a third to a half is of high Renaissance Chorale from the Genevan Psalter, The Bohemian Brethren , the Anglican and Lutheran traditions. The rest is music of Celtic and today's composers some from the congregation itself. So far all is acoustic. With music classes dropped from curricula and the passing of those with the benefit of having been taught to understand musical notation how long will it be before the music of congregation which at one time could sight read complicated music is dumbed down too. It's happened before and Sacred Harp was a part of the return of part singing in America. It's grievous to me and sometimes I feel as though I was born in the wrong century. I never feel closer to the divine than when singing great music and Praetorius together with early Bach bring me to tears of joy.

I am fortunate also to sing in a congregation-- RC-- that recognizes good music. I would say most of can sing Gregorian chant by now... we don't do Celtic, but sing a lot of Latin. We have a gifted organist/music director, and a string orchestra at Xmas.

This is a reissue of a fantastic recording made by Deutsche Grammophon back in the 1970s. It is one of the finest recordings ever made of German Christmas music. If you have ever been in Germany during Christmas and attended some of the Cathedral concerts of the time, this music is instantly recognizable. It renders all other Christmas music, particularly that of the modern times pathetic by comparison .
