Nice eye! You're right, we're not using proper mechanics to achieve maximum vertical lift. As a jumper, dunker and jump coach, that movement was incorporated by design and not neglect. It's a jump training exercise I do to add variety to a jump workout, I call squat pops, created to overload your legs and glutes more by not using proper momentum when exploding off the floor.
