Yes, if you are worried about it coming apart, po pa little dab of buttercream frosting on the base of each cupcake liner before you put them on the board. this will help them to stick in place for the journey :)

If you want a smaller version, just do one ring of cupcakes on a smaller board. It won't be as thick and 'bushy' but it will still look beautiful :)
