Sorry to correct you all but Gammelstad is not situated in Lapland. It´s close but no! The name means The old town and was the former Luleå. But due to the problems to raising level of the shores the town was moved down the river (älv) in around 1650. The town needed a better and deeper harbour.

Hello Frans, Thank you for your comments. All depends of course how do you define "Swedish Lapland". Northern Sweden tourism authorities use commonly "Swedish Lapland" to cover entire Norrbotter and Västerbotten regions. Of course then can also be other geographical ways to determine "Lapland".

@@europevideoprod Yes, I can understand your point. But for me and the children that was born in Luleå for 64 years ago never saw us as living i Lappland (spelled in swedish). Actually was laps and Lapland something that many people saw as something negatve. Today there are of course not the same, but I can tell you there are conflicts in Lapland still today, it´s the so called native people and so called swedes, and this is a problem also i Norway, Finland, in Russia I don´t know. Gammelstad Christmas market in Luleå is certainly the most beautiful and nicest Christmas market of Sweden and Scandinavia. It's a shame it is open only during one weekend.
