Can you use a file to sharpen a axe

Yeah you can. Sometimes when I get an axe for the first time I’ll use a file to thin the cheeks and work out an edge. I’ll follow it up with my whetstone. But once I get the profile I want, I normally go just use a whetstone in the future unless I have some gouges or breaks in the bit from rocks or chains hitting the bit
