Wow, haven't been home for over 4 years now and around 10 years for Christmas. Was so nice to have a glimpse! For the food: Gulyás is a soup. The bun soaked up the fluid. Funnily I like it that way so when I have it on a plate I tear up the bread and drop it into the soup so I end up with a similar consistency. Difference is that it would be mostly the inside of the bread not the crust. Also depending on how the soup is I may put some sour cream into it, the same stuff you had on the lángos. For the Kürtöskalács I never had one with orangy flavour, but I am not surprised. We use grated lemon peel or orange peel in many of our cakes. The traditional version is no orange and cinnamon but it was common to be able to chose vanilla, cocoa, walnut flavours. And it was available on "every corner" around 40 years ago. There were small specialised shops selling it and you could buy them on every event or buffet like at a public pool so wasn't restricted to christmas. I am glad you enjoyed the food and thank you for the show around, I myself enjoyed that very much! Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, Gab! So glad we could give you a glimpse of Budapest at Christmas time since you haven't been home for quite a few years now. We really enjoyed the markets and the city is so beautiful right now. We LOVED the kürtöskalács, so fresh and tasty, so nice to eat it while wandering around the Christmas market. OK, let's get this right: goulash in Hungary is a soup. We do not eat it from a bread, because - like in the video - the soup would be sucked up by the bread and we do not want that - you'll end up eating too much bread with a too thick mush. Internationally they tend to call the Hungarian 'pörkölt' as goulash, now that is actually a stew indeed. But again, goulash is definitely a soup and it is a lot less thick than what you ate.
@HungryTwoTravel2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, LesBrown. We tried a goulash elsewhere in Hungary and you're right, it was very different. We agree, it does get very soaked up in the bread and is a lot different when in a bowl as a soup. Thanks so much for watching 😉😊

Simplify: gulyás means "cattle herder" (like cowboy). Gulyás as a dish name comes from the herders field meal. As herders usually had a cauldron, paprika, onion, salt, some vegetables (mostly potato, carrot, etc.) and of course the meat from a cut down cattle and water, these simple ingredients based the staple. Sometimes they made it a soup with more water and vertables, sometimes with less water, less vegetables (simply cooked separately as a sidedish or simply replaced by fresh bread) they let the meat slightly fry-roast on the hot wall of the cauldron, creating that steaky aroma when they scraped the roasted meat back into the stew. Hence the name "pörkölt" which translates close to roasted, slightly burned. Actually the soup and the stew are so compatible, that the not eaten stew was reused as a meat base to make a good tasty gulyás soup. Also, from the stew, after grinding it down, they make filling for Hortobágyi húsos palacsinta which is a thick crepes like rolled up pasta, filled with ground stew, sour cream, paprika and spices. Now that is a nice staple meal in Hungary.

Hi Guys. You say that the prices are very expensive, "tailored" for tourists. Well, the prices at Vörösmarty Square are indeed. Everything is very expensive, really tailored to the wallets of foreign visitors, because wages are higher abroad. But, i think the prices at the fair in front of St Stephen's Basilica are very friendly. The giant hornbread is 2800 HUF. A normal sized hornbread in our city is 1200 HUF on weekdays; and this what you bought are 2x bigger. The mulled wine is the same price in our Christmas market. The cheese-sour cream lángos are 1000 HUF on weekdays. So quite reasonable prices in front of the basilica. Nevertheless, I'm glad you liked the Budapest fairs and the lángos is the best "street food" in the world :D :D Best regards from Hungary
@HungryTwoTravel2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Yes the prices at Vörösmarty are definitely the highest of all the markets. Agreed, the chimney cake was a decent price compared to the smaller ones! That's also why we went to the local market away from the centre of the city, to show the different prices, such as the lángos, the lángos by the Basilica were 3x the price, so better at a smaller market😉 thanks again for watching! We love Budapest and really enjoyed exploring the Christmas markets so much🎅😍

Well, the chimney cake is not exactly best value at christmas markets :D. At my local market I usually buy that for $2 not $7.25. But people don't go to christmas markets for cheap food so its fine :D. But its worth mentioning that if you travel on a budget, you can enjoy the christmas markets by buying a chimney cake (kürtös kalács) a few streets away for much cheaper, and bring it with yourself to the market and enjoy it there. It will be the same taste if not better. And I really like how you did that exactly with the lángos. For that size? Thats a really good price. I mean considering that we are in a recession.
@HungryTwoTravel2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, Adam. We totally agree... The Christmas markets are definitely for the vibe, and you pay for that for sure. The best value is really at the local markets and other areas of the city, which is usually where we're at😉 it's nice to check it all out though and experience everything to see what's there. $2 for a chimney cake sounds awesome😄 they're so tasty. Thanks so much for watching!
@boom14812 жыл бұрын
Where do you recommend getting a good and affordable chimney cake?😊
@adamkiraly78332 жыл бұрын
@@boom1481 That's a hard question cos chimney cake places come and go all the time. Plus there is no one place that makes incredible Chimney cakes. Usually if it sells Chimney cake with icecream in it or dipped in chocolate, its a bad, tourist trap. If you see a food cart, that sells cheap "Kürtös kalács" and it has a line, and smells wonderful, then its a good place. Anything that looks super fancy is a red flag. Chimney cake is not fancy food and if its sold as fancy food, then its probably a tourist trap.
