I’ve went to garibaldi a few times before as I used to live in Tillamook when I was really little.Went through it last right before Covid on the way to Rockaway.I’ve seen the steam trains once or twice,again,when I was really little,never knew they did a holiday express!

Merry Christmas and thank you so much for this presentation! I was a locomotive engineer for southern Pacific until 1982 when I had to leave for personal reasons! my father retired as a locomotive engineer for southern Pacific working steam in the 1940s! it warms my heart to see the Garibaldi road! but it also saddens me to see the change, to see the Tillamook branch being closed down! having studied southern pacific history! such incredibly gorgeous runs I. E. Toledo branch, Tillamook branch, The Westside branch which ran through the Willamette Valley started in Portland and went to Albany Oregon and then south to Eugene it was my regular run for a while. But going through the valley was awesome! sorry I’m getting carried away! also the run between Crescent Lake in Klamath Falls! in 1963 historic depots and all railroad hotels! Grand memories

The RDCs are ex-Central RR of New Jersey. POTB acquired them in the 1990s for their Oregon Coast Explorer passenger service between Garibaldi and Wheeler. The passenger shelters in Garibaldi, Rockaway Beach and Wheeler were built for this service. Oregon Coast Scenic was created in 2003 to replace the Oregon Coast Explorer.

@@martinadams7949 gotcha. It’s my understanding that the RDCs no longer move on their own, so some engine/motor was removed or something like that.

There are two engines each has a transmission then a drive shaft connected to a gearbox on one axke. You can essentially put it in neutral and pull it.

I visited this summer and... I wasn't impressed. I'm glad the line hasn't been ripped up, and the views are very scenic. But their assigned seating and boarding policies are really annoying.

What camera do you use? How do you like it?
@7ideaproductions
@7ideaproductions Жыл бұрын
Most of the footage was shot with a Panasonic AG CX350. It was recorded in Intra-Frame at 400 Mb/sec. You can get a nice picture out of these camcorders although they are a little too lightweight for my taste. If you shoot a lot outdoors (trains) be careful with this camera. Dust can easily get on the sensor. I found out the hard way. Second camera was a Panasonic S1H with a 20-60mm lens. Footage was shot at 5.9k and scaled down.
@West_Cascade_Rail
@West_Cascade_Rail Жыл бұрын
@7idea Productions good to know. What was the process of getting the dust off the sensor? How much did it cost to do so? And which camera do you like better? Thanks
@7ideaproductions
@7ideaproductions Жыл бұрын
I believe it was around $300. A more robust camera would be the SONY PXW Z280. Beautiful images and superior sound compared with the Panasonic. It is a three chip camera with a nice Fujinon lens. It uses more expensive SxS cards but it is truly a tank and one of my favorite cameras to shoot on. for a camcorder, it is the most expensive option. I have also used the Canon XF605 which is a well built camera although I found its LCD screen was too reflective for outdoor use and the viewfinder was too small for my taste. The images are very sharp (Canon L Series lens of course) although I am not fond of Canon colors (personal preference only). You might take one for a test drive.

@@7ideaproductions Very good information, thank you. Where does the CX350 rank with the cameras you just mentioned?
@7ideaproductions
@7ideaproductions Жыл бұрын
It is the least expensive. It has a better zoom range than either SONY or Canon. Long battery life when compared to the SONY. As far as operation the 350's LCD screen is easier to read than either the SONY or the Canon. The Viewfinder is probably comparable to the SONY although it doesn't have as many pixels. Much better than Canon in that department. Panasonic lacks the good AF of the SONY and Canon, but I never use AF. The 350 has V-log but I wouldn't recommend using it. Too soft. Both SONY and Canon beat it easily there. Bottom line: For a 10 Bit 4K camcorder in its price range it is hard to beat, just beware of dust. The other cameras aren't perfect either, it's really what fits your needs best. I own two 350's (both have had to go to the shop for a variety of reasons) and bought a third for my church.

Different Rockaway, but Shawn Colvin has a song about Twin Rocks which is basically the southern outskirts of Rockaway, and Everckear has a song called Nehalem which is north of Rockaway, I'd guess, about 10 or 15 miles. And, I don't remember the artist's name, but there is also a song about the Tillamook County Jail.
