Thanks for the tutorial. Every year I have 1 or 3 strands go out. I was at my local Home Depot and they didnt have the matching strands I bought last year and they showed me this tool. It was on sale for $30 but they said since they didnt have lights in stock and I spent hundreds on last year to update my lights to LED they sold me thile tool for $5 (not kidding). I thought it was a cheap looking tool but seeing this tutorial it looks promising!

You nailed it, Ken. I tell folks that all the time. Unfortunately, you can't depend on stores carrying matching lights for you to go back to when you need to replaced strings and color match to your existing strings. The ONLY work around is to go ahead and buy several back up lights during your initial purchase for future problems or to fix your existing strings. This tool is a life-saver! Plus, it comes with a lifetime warranty!

I am not sure what I'm doing wrong but I am following the instructions and when I press the trigger on the LED keeper nothing is lighting up. My initial situation is just like the video where half of the lights do not light when I plug into the outlet. I am placing the strand that goes into the bulb in the trigger so I believe I am doing that right. Any ideas? Wish i could post picture.

I'LL BE DIPPED! I was stringing some lights on the house this weekend and sure enough, I had a string with 1/2 the lights not working. In the past, I would've tossed them in the trash, only being thankful I didn't discover after hanging them up on the roof. I just fixed them in 5 minutes with this tool and rewatched your video for a refresher course!

I picked one up years ago and it has saved me so many strings, the first one I got at Ace hardware, and I picked another one up this year for sale after Christmas for about 6 dollars at Home Depot, I have consumer grade LED strings that are now going on over 15 years of use because I can fix the fault in the string!

Hey, Scotty. That question has come up a lot in the comments so far. The answer is two-fold. If you are using commercial-grade LEDs then you can purchase them from any online commercial-grade supplier. www.christmaslightsetc.com/ is currently having a 40% sale. Creative Displays has their 40% pre-sale in about 8 weeks. If you need retail grade lights the easiest, and by far the cheapest way, is to simply buy an additional string of matching LEDs. I always buy an extra string of 100ct lights to use as 100 spares. While you can buy replacement LED bulbs in a package they run $6 for 5 bulbs. Which is why it is easier and cheaper to buy the extra $8 box of 100 ct lights.

Just wanted to point out that the pods can be used if the wire is bad (like you said) but also when you have commercial grade lights which have non-removeable bulb. You cut the bulb out and replace it with the pod.

Wow, just bought it at Canadian Tire & it took me only 5 minutes to fix 2 strands of 38 lights. One of the strand was the wire (which I gave up troubleshooting after 2 hours). I fix one strand yesterday without the LED Keeper & it took me over an hour. ❤

Just picked one up at Home Depot. Don't trust the battery that comes installed when you get it. I was ready to return it after having zero luck testing sections. It would test individual LEDs and fuses but would not light sections I knew worked. I swapped out the battery and then had no issues. Fixed a string of 300 lights in less than 5 minutes.

Thank you for the information. I have four long strands I need to troubleshoot. I have plenty of replacement bulbs. I have one strand that some jackass ruined. The wire was cut and the last socket was cut completely off. I kept the ruined strand for replacement bulbs.

Charlie, the tool pierces the wire when you pull the trigger. But I never saw you seal any of these holes. Doesn't that create an entry point for water intrusion, corrosion, failure point in the future?

That's a great question, Sal. Christmas light wire is actual self healing. Although the LED Keeper uses insulation piercing technology in order to tap into the LED light set and illuminate functional sections, the material used to manufacture the insulation has the tendency to “heal” itself. The miniature puncture left behind might not even be visible since it is so tiny.

Hey there, John! That's the question, isn't it. In 2023, Walmart started the trend in selling strings with non-replaceable bulbs. Now, the only solution is the one you mentioned. You are now compelled to cut out the bad bulb and reconnect the line. Or, it compels you to go back to Walmart and buy more lights that will break on you once again. More big box stores are following suit this year. Many hobbyists are moving over to custom strings. They are super simple to make and last 5-10 years.

Hey there, Matt. This is made by a Chicago company. No need for a warranty through Home Depot though, this comes with a lifetime guarantee from the company's owner. I've heard that the 2019 models had a few bad batteries out of the box but I've not heard any complaints since then. I think you'll quickly gain back the cost of this with the lights that you'll fix versus replacing.

Hello, Philsy. Actually, that's a common sign of one particular issue. Often times one bulb will test fine BUT upon closer inspection you'll notice one of the bulb's copper prongs has worn off. It carries a low light signal but it can't deliver at full strength. I actually prefer the center section being out since I know what the problem is. On the 3 wired bulbs, make certain you test each of the three wires. Sometimes one will carry a low signal, one won't do anything, and the third is the correct wire to test. Let me know if that works!

So, two things. One, fanfreakingtastic handle! Secondly, dimming us normally the result of a break in the line somewhere. This can occur with the twisting and manipulation of strings over time. The copper will get a small break which makes it difficult to send power down the line. Those are very hard to find since they are inside of the plastic coating. Another cause can be a corroded socket. Those, are easy to find by removing the bulbs and utilizing a phaser, er...I mean a flashlight. The flashlight is helpful for seeing inside the entire socket to check for any amount of corrosion. Live long and prosper!

Hello, Seah. The three wired strings are much easier to test compared to the four wire. Of the three wires, you will need to test the wire that runs from light to light. Loosen up the wires and you'll notice one wire in specific that goes into the light socket and out while the other two skip a few bulbs. This is the wire you are meant to test. You nailed it, the nub is designed to replace an entire socket should you have a socket or point that can't be replaced. For me, this is normally from surges or squirrels having a winter snack. Hello, High Speed. This has saved me more money than any other item I have for my light show. Holiday time is Walmart's brand and while Walmart does sell individual replacement bulbs in 5 packs it makes zero sense to buy them. They sell there 5 pack of mini replacement bulbs for $4.46 each. That is a very silly price since you can purchase a string of 50 mini multicolor lights for $2.98. I'd recommend buying a single set of them and BOOM you have several replacement bulbs. You can also designate one string you already own as a donor string and use bulbs from that.

Hey! I’ve got a Candy Cane led light lawn decoration that has about 1/2 of the lights working however as I’m testing, neither the lights to the left or the right are lighting. I’ve only been able to get one lightbulb to light while testing. Any idea what this means, how to fix or suggestions to better diagnose? I really don’t want to unclip the lights from the decoration because of how difficult it might be to reattach them to the candy cane if it can be avoided. Thanks!

Hey there, Gerald. It can be frustrating to fix lights when they are already installed. What I hear you are saying is that you are testing the lights with the LED Keeper and when you test them, the light bulb you are testing still attached to the string will illuminate but the light on either side of a single bulb will be dark. This normally occurs when you have either multiple bad bulbs or when the bulb's copper prongs are missing or not fully making contact inside of the socket. Let me know if that isn't what you are describing.

Well, I fixed mine, I had to add one of those green little plastic box things and cut the wires to put in it. Everything worked after that and replacing a couple dead bulbs. However, after about a week or two of the lights working perfectly.... most of the lights went out again. All of them were out to the point where I had installed the little green box thing. When I pushed in the neutral wire in the box, the lights went back on again. So I noticed that metal piece inside that looks like a razor blade cut around the insulation on the neutral wire. I trimmed it back again and tried once more so that the neutral wire wasn't exposed. Lights worked once again. 10 min. later... they went back out. I don't know what to do now about that neutral wire that keeps getting cut and exposed by that metal razor piece inside the green plastic thing. That is what the problem is.

That's an interesting issue, Tacotac10. Have you tried switching out the pods? You should have received two in the package. Another option, you can always take the pod off and use a regular electric connector cap. I use those more than anything else. You can always use a heat shrink as well but the connector caps are a the quickest. Either the cap or the heat shrink will solve the problem!

Tried using the no contact voltage finder method... got tired of flipping the plug around in the outlet when the wires leading into and out of the bulbs became 'neutral '. This arrived today and I got 4 cheap ass strands working again.

Wish finding where my lights current ended was as easy as a single strand. Im trying to fix a horse, carriage, 2 reindeer and a sleigh. The wires criss cross everywhere and it seems like theres several different areas that are connected in different ways (kinda like icicle lights) so i truly just cant follow the wire.

As long as they are LED's, one easy trick is simply to use the LED keeper. When the lights illuminate from the Keeper it will show you. or should show you, the path they are wired. Sounds like that would be a frustrating time though.

That's gotta be classic short copper situation, Gustavo. If they are all illuminated with the Kepper but not when they are plugged into an outlet, most of the time that is due to a bulb or multiple bulbs having short or missing prongs. As the bulbs sit in the socket, their prongs will wear down and loose the ability to have a proper connection. Every once in awhile it will be due to a corroded socket.

Hey there, Juerhenh. I've only heard of this occurring once before but it does happen...try testing the battery. While it is rare, it is possible the provided battery is bad. Replace the battery and then test the strings. I imagine that will solve the problem. If not, Ulta-Lit will take great care of you and get you going. There needs to be more discussion using structure-mounted lights, and what it means when a section is dimly lit, along with unlit sections. Our nativity set has been a real challenge. Worse was the 3D horse we have. This works but the Pro nor other people discuss dim lites, and working with a design structure is a challenge that makes simple straight strings look like a cakewalk.

The first thing that comes to mind is you have exposed wire somewhere and the connection isn't solid. If the bulbs are built into the tree then you may have to contact the manufacturer on a fix. Another option would be If this is a removable string then you can test it as normal with the Keeper. If the string is not removable from the tree but the bulbs are, you can test each bulb with the Keeper until you find the broken bulb.

I do indeed, however, you may not need a new one. Sometimes the pin just needs to be flipped. This is similar to using both ends of a pencil. Hey there, Josh. It certainly should. The LED Keeper sends power throughout the lighting system and whatever doesn't illuminate winds up being the culprit. I've no experience with 4 wires, but I would imagine they receive power in the same manner so the Keeper should work well with them.

After the wire gets pierced, are you still able to use the lights outdoors and when it rains is there a chance that it could lead to the GFCI tripping?

Fair question, Ethan. The piercing doesn't adversely affect the string at all. The wire is already outdoor rated and is designed to withstand moisture already. Plus, the hole is so incredibly small that you really have to strain your eyes to find it if you are looking for it. What hurts light shows is standing water. Water that gets trapped in the male and female ends screws with the power which is why a lot of light shows don't run when it is raining. I use gaskets on my cords so I don't have an issue with that.

Curious - I love the video, however, if the strands are already up??? ...for example, in testing, all my lights worked - now, I have a small section out along my eaves... how could I use this tool without having to take the strand all down... this as I need to plug it into the strand ...could I connect it to the strand through a small extension cord (as an example) to give it enough reach?

HELP-I just bought this and cannot get ti to work. My outside display has always been incandescents and I love the light keeper pro. That has helped countless times. As I am slowly going to LED, i bought some LED's from ACE hardware after Christmas and placed them to see how they will look next year. I have the mini lights 100 red set. After a few days, in 2 separate strands, half of the lights stopped working. I checked the wires to make sure nothing was loose and they weren't. So, I bought the led keeper. When I plug the lights into the yellow plug, nothing goes on, even the ones that work. The red light powers on the tester but when testing the wires on either side, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Thank you.

Hello Vince. It's not you. Very likely you need to replace the 9V battery the Keeper came with. About 10% of the time the battery has enough juice to light the tester but not the strand. If that doesn't work, it could be the Keepers pin. I have a way to fix that so let me know if switching the battery does work!

@@ChristmasOnCrestline I actually received a call back from Jim at LedKeeper. He said if the red light comes on, the battery should be good. But, I also had the same feeling you did that the cheap chinese battery might not be strong enough. He also talked about switching the pin as it may not be piercing the insulation enough. I was like, I JUST bought this 2 days ago it should be working?!? So, I have since fixed my light issue but may try to find that bad bulb and try these changes. I was disappointed that a brand new set from ACEhardware would have 3 lights with broken metal pieces after only using them a few days. Does this happen often with LED? Thanks fore your help. I have strings from Walmart, they look like old c-9s, small led light in a plastic globe. I only have a complete string failure. I have never found a blown fuse. The light keeper doesn’t work because I don’t have any lights that come on. Any suggestions?

Whole string outages are the worst, Randy! I am guessing these are LED stings, correct? If so, it may be your rectifier that went bad. When that goes, the string goes. The only two other options is A) you have multiple failures which are prohibiting the flow of energy to the working bulbs or B) you have corrosion in multiple sockets that it too is blocking the current. To find corrosion, utilize a flashlight and look at the interior of the sockets.

I have an LED strip I just hung up and not a single bulb is working. When I plug another strand in to the end of the broken strand, that strand works but the broken once still does not. Should I get this tool, and where do I start?

That was a great idea to test the string's power, Nick. Yes, get the Led Keeper. You likely have one of two problems. You either have several bulbs out at once or you have a corroded bulb socket. The most likely answer is multiple bad bulbs. The Keeper will help you identify which bulbs are bad. When first starting out with the tool, plan on each string taking 5 - 10 mins to fix, especially with multiple failures. However, after 5 or so strings, you really get the hang of this and you'll start knocking back strings in 2-3 mins.

I’m confused regarding testing the wire… does the tool actually supposed to penetrate through (cut through) the plastic coating? Won’t that short out the wires if outdoors? Or risk getting shocked if handling the light strand where it was tested (bare wire)?

Hello, C Ya. You nailed it. The tool will puncture through the plastic coating and touch the wire. This hole doesn't bother the lights one bit. In fact, the plastic will actually repair itself as it will expand and contract as the temperatures fluctuate. The LED Keeper is used when the lights are plugged into it so there is no power to them minus the battery that is in the device. Once or twice a year, I'll have a light failure after the show has been hung. I test them when they are hung on the house too. You are good to go!

I had a squirrel chew a socket off a strand of led c9s. With the socket missing what is the best way to fix this? Only the one wire that goes into the socket was cut and the socket and bulb no where to be found. Thanks for the great content

Hello, J Farm. If you have a Keeper, use the pods it comes with and you can simply bypass that missing socket. I normally just cut the wire on either side of the missing socket , wire it back together, and then either heat shrink it or use a wire connector. Once that's done the string is back to normal. I have to due that to a dozen or so strings each year due to squirrels.

It is the way to go, I think. IN addition to using less electricity, with LEDs, even if the red lens falls off, the bulb will be red still. Whereas with incandescents the bulbs are all white and they get their color from the lens.

An exception to that rule would be three-wired lights and lights that are attached to a built-in controller. I imagine your chasers have a built-in controller. Hello, Sherih. When this happens to me, I either have a shortened or broke prong one of the bulbs. In my experience, I oftentimes get the same reaction when they are plugged in but they go out as I manipulate the cord. Another option is that one of the bulb's simply is not fully seated in its socket and just needs a little push. To find a shortened prong, you will need to check the three bulbs on either side of the issue socket.

One wire will be the "constant" and carry the electricity throughout the sting. Don't worry if you test one of the wires and it doesn't show has having power. One wire won't register as it doesn't carry the power. That's about the only difference, James.

Sounds like you have a copper issue on a bulb or two. Oftentimes, a bulbs copper prong will where down too much. If you didn't find the issue, call 888-858-2548. They'll walk you through the solution.

What would cause all lights to flicker once then off complete? They never come back on. Wiggling the wire does nothing. Unplugging and manipulating the plug causes the once time brief flicker

You likely have one of two issues, Jet. The most likely cause is that you have a break in the copper somewhere on the string. The second possibility is that you have corrosion in one of the bulb sockets. I would recommend starting your search with a flashlight and at the male end of the string. The break is likely at or near the beginning of the string. If you have a corrosive socket, you will certainly need the flashlight to shine into the socket, once you've removed the bulb, to get conformation that there is in fact corrosion in the socket. Also, the flashlight can assist you in checking the line for micro breaks seeing if there is any exposed copper shining through the plastic coating. Please, let me know which one ends up being the culprit!

Hey there, Aerica. 90% of the time, you have multiple bad bulbs. My record in one 1/2 of a string is 8 bad bulbs. 6 of the bulbs had one of their copper prongs missing and 2 bulbs were simply duds. The other 10% of the time, you have a cut wire or the string is missing a bulb(s). Let me know though if it was something else so I can mention your issue to others.

Is this a pre-lit tree, Melinda? If so, unfortunately, pre-lits are not designed to be repaired and are quite difficult to fix. If this is not a pre-lit, the easiest way to find culprit bulib(s) is to remove the light string(s) from the tree and repair them without fighting the tree's branches. Let me know.

Hello, Jeane. Do you have a Keeper? If you do, the amount of strings doesn't matter to determine where the bad bulb is at for the Keeper. You will need to take an extra few seconds to determine which wire to use for testing though. The Keeper will work as it normally would on a two wire string.

Great question, David! Yes, you can use the LED Keeper (amzn.to/40HK6Au) to help diagnose issues with LED net lights and glitter mesh decorations like reindeer. The LED Keeper is really useful for finding faulty bulbs or breaks in the circuit. For net lights, you can test each section to locate the problem, and for glitter mesh decorations, it works in a similar way, though the wiring paths can sometimes be harder to follow. Just a heads-up: if the problem is with a rectifier, those unfortunately aren’t fixable so replacing the set may be necessary in that case. I hope this helps, and good luck with your lights!

What about icicle lights that have a "back light prevention" thing so there's a extra wire, every other bulb I put this on lights and of i skip then the out ones light on every 3rd bulb it doesn't make sense and it's impossible to keep track

Yes, they are indeed frustrating, Josh. The trick is to test each light on both sides of the bulb. While, takes more time to test icicles than a normal strand, I can generally fix a set of these in under 15 minutes. With a normal string, I'm done in less than 3. It's still faster and cheaper than driving to the store and getting new sets that may or may not match the light color of the others.

Hello, Tom. Unfortunately, if it is in fact the relay that is bad, relays can't be fixed. However, having that many relays on a single string, it would be worth your time checking the fuses. Having fuses go bad is actually fairly rare but does happen when there are more than two relays on a string.
