When I was a kid I was a huge fan of Nirvana and one of my favorite records was their great live album “MTV unplugged in New York”. Nirvana played a spine shivering version of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” on that album.
Later when I got into blues and other types American folk music I heard Lead Belly’s beautiful take on the song and recently I heard a wonderful version of it by Dave Van Ronk called “In The Pines”. I guess that there are a lot of great interpretations of this song that I am yet to hear.
The song has a haunting quality to it that really gets one’s imagination going. I read somewhere that the song might be as old as the 1870’s? Does anyone know the story behind this song? If so I would love to read about it in the comments.
“Where Did You Sleep Last Night” is a traditional song.
