Christopher is a superlative representative of his father's work. He speaks just about as well as anyone I've ever heard speak, about Rothko's work. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to hear his thoughts on the occasion of this special event.

Have been getting drawn to Mark Rothko’s paintings lately. I’m sure he’s smiling at his son who does such a great job guiding us into his father’s work. Christopher is very easy to listen to. 👍🏼

Was lucky enough to see him seated alone at table in MOMA's garden one day. I went over and told him I loved his paintings but was too shy to say anything else. He thanked me and I left. Have since read much about him and what I love above all is how generous he was with his money. Always asking young artists he knew if they had enough money when he met them. Surely a sensitive soul like Mark is now enjoying a wonderful next life.

Interesting, especially when you realize that his son was only seven when Mark Rothko died. What a memory !

It is hard to dismiss Rothko, and yet after a lifetime of viewing his paintings I really do not find them as interesting or rewarding as great art by hundreds of other artists. I do like Rothko the man more than his paintings.

I felt the same way until I saw them in person at the Tate in London. I found seeing them in person to be overwhelming emotionally in a way I still can't explain.

@@wegotlumpsofitroundtheback5065 Well, after living in Manhattan for decades and visiting museums frequently, I've seen plenty of original Rothko's, as well as retrospectives of his less famous and earlier works. I've even seen an original Rothko painting in the home of an accomplished artist who knew Rothko personally. As I say, I admire this artist, but I get a lot more from some other artists of her era, such as DeKooning and Gorky, not to even mention the countless hundreds of great artists from past periods.

yes, I am getting the money after my famous dad died, I'll spin the narrative of genius for my personal profit when really it was just experiments in color, this whole "other universe" spiel is complete salesmanship, no offense but come on man, some of us are artists and you can't sell this idea of a low effort painter being a genius forever...

I saw Rothko exhibition this week in Paris. It was the second time i’ve viewed his work in person after seeing it in the Tate years ago. It was really moving in person then. When you actually stand in front of them, they are different. The depth, the intensity, the feelings they evoke. They are like portals. I saw the blue and white one shown here for the first time this week and it stunned me. You have to witness in person to see it. I found it very spiritual. The do evoke things in the viewer. For me this one was transendental. It brought to mind what i imagine the transition from life to death might feel like. It evokes air and water too. They are like mirrors of your subjective inner world. They are stunning. But viewed in a photo or on screen they look flat and ordinary.

@@mary-janefitzsimons9600 You get it! Bravo! I tell people to just sit in front of one of his master paintings for 5 or 10 minutes and stare. You will see the colors start moving and the depth start shifting. It is an unforgettable experience. Rothko has said that some viewers break down and cry in front of his art. I can understand why. These are VERY emotional paintings! Just sublime.
