Wow! What a pretty young man! I watched a video (KZbin) of an old film with young Ronnie Walken as this boy with the gift of seeing... through walls (he'd grow up to be able to see the future, in The Dead Zone!) He looked pretty much like he does here, just younger, blonder and cuter - very pretty, and angelic. But he was already getting tall and lanky at that age. And he spoke with that 50s film/TV style smoothed-out generic accent, not his famous Noo Yawk accent. All very normal, no weird rhythms, no odd pauses and unusual intonation. Everything in that smooth non-regional accent and style that a no-name actor needed to do to in those days to get hired in screen productions. It's in his 30s or so, that you start to hear that crackling in his voice. You can't hear that here in this clip. If I close my eyes, I wouldn't be able to recognize this as Christopher Walken's voice. No crackling in the voice, no Noo Yawk accent, no odd rhythm and intonation. But when I watch him, I can see him do the lip lick thing, and his expression as he says the bit about "zero" (plus something in the emphasis of his voice there) you can see those hint of later "classic Walken" mannerisms and speech style. In clips from The Anderson Tapes (1971) Walken has his Noo Yawk accent, playing an ex-con. He's around 27 there and still looking ethereal and pretty. Contrasts sharply with the deep voice and Noo Yawk accent. And again, the odd cadence, pauses and intonation are toned down there. It was still early in his film career, and his first big film (starring Sean Connery doing a bad NYC accent that constantly slips into Scottish). So he would have had to play it straight and follow the director's requests.

You may have seen The Boy Who Saw Through (Walken's first movie role) on my channel. I could not find it anywhere else on KZbin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWmuaGyrj6eagpY

Thank you for another great Christopher Walken clip. It is amazing to see him so early in his career.

He handled a very difficult part like the pro that he was. He had to be bitter, angry and hurt/vulnerable all at the same time.

I didn't realize Eddie Albert was such a good actor. I've never seen him in a serious role.

Yes, he was great here... he was also really good in 'Roman Holiday' with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

It's ironic that the character's name is Chris. Walken has said that he prefers to be called Chris, and that Christopher Walken looks so long when it's displayed up there on a screen. He didn't adopt his stage name until years later, when he was a dancer on this well-known entertainer's stage show. She said he needed a different name, and felt that Christopher suited him. And it stuck. The name Ronnie - Ronald - reflects his mother's love of the screen actor Ronald Colman, a popular and romantic leading man in his day. Today it's hard to imagine him being a Ronnie Walken.

So strange to see Walken in 'Black & White'.

Go watch Walken as a boy. A boy with the strange power of...seeing through walls! He looks pretty much the same, just younger, fuller cheeks and cuter. An angel! Nobody could have imagined then that he'd grow up to play so many oddballs (Annie Hall) and haunted types (The Dead Zone, The Deer Hunter), and violent crime bosses (At Close Range, The King of New York, The Funeral, Suicide Kings etc.), crazy creepy killers (The Comfort of Strangers) and cartoonish villains (View to a Kill, Batman). And to host Saturday Night Live making jokes about cowbells!
