Keep in mind. This video is 23 minutes long and soldiers go through hours of training to learn land navigation. So are you going to be able to watch this video and be a pro at land nav..... no. This is geared to give you an idea of how its done or even refresh your memory on how to do land nav. So keep that in mind when watching this video. This would really need to be like a hour or two long video to really train someone effectively.

You need to mention that it depends on the location of the map. You need to follow the declination diagram not all maps have the same grid and magnetic north formulas. For example, a map located in California vs New England will have completely different declination diagram formulas. That's super important and will clear up a lot of confusion. Other than that awesome freakin work man! You actually took the time and spoke clearly!
@justanotherone685
@justanotherone685 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, and in the map he is using you’d subtract from magnetic to grid, not add btw. Think about it logically, the declination diagram is telling you on this map whatever you shoot is going to be 13degrees higher than it will be on the map-so you’d subtract in this case, not add.

I became quite good at it at a time. I flunked PLDC the first time because of Land Nav. I was really unprepared at that time. I then coordinated with the Scout Platoon, and went out with them as often as possible. When I went back to School, I maxed it out. It just takes some practice and understanding of the things Christopher is talking about here, which is explained well by Him. There used to be an FM 21-26, I don't know if it is still used now but it had all of the Land Navigation Info.

Just a tip, i would shave all the excess plastic inside of the triangle you are using. Each point you plot you want it to be as close to the black surrounding line inside of the triangle. If you plot it away from the line you could be hundreds of yards off.

It seems I remember being taught that if the declination angle is RIGHT of grid North, you add it, whatever it is. If the declination angle is LEFT of grid North, you subtract it. So right add, left subtract. Does anyone else remember this?

Adding or subtracting when going from compass to map/grid/true north depends on which side of the agonic line you are on. If you are on the west coast you will be subtracting because magnetic north is east of true north. If you are on the east coast you will be adding because true north is east of magnetic north. So it isn't always true that if you go from magnetic to grid it's add and going from grid to magnetic you subtract. Should clarify that.

From what I've been reading in regards to declination it would seem that adding or subtracting is dependent on if your magnetic north is east or west of your grid north. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I am new to learning land navigation but this is the understanding that I have come to: When the magnetic north is east of the grid north you add the G-M angle to the magnetic azimuth to convert it to the grid azimuth; then, when converting from grid to magnetic you subtract the G-M angle from the grid azimuth. However, if your magnetic north is west of your grid north then the opposite is true. With a westerly declination, when converting from magnetic north to grid north you would subtract the G-M angle from the magnetic azimuth; then, when converting from grid north to magnetic north you would add the G-M angle to the grid azimuth. That's my understanding of declination. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You missed out something very important with your calculated directions. The thing you left out is when you took magnetic declination in consideration, you left out that is not a constant. On the map it should show the the date and the amount of degrees it changes annually up to a certain angle before it moves back again and so on meaning you have to either add or subtract depending on the date on the map and the date at the present time and then only do you have your heading. Anyway, that is not too important as you condensed a lot of info into a short video. So the info you gave is sufficient to get people stared :-) A long time ago when I was in the Army in my country I was our platoon "navigator". Oh, and we used Mils, not degrees so that was an additional pain in the ass thing to keep in mind when plotting and doing conversions and calculations. Mils is more accurate and if I recall correctly 1 degree and a few seconds (45-ish) is equivalent 18 mills. Basically 360 degrees is 6400 mils. Anyway, very informative vid.

Here's how my platoon did it in basic: Got sent to another platoon's class, stayed about 15 minutes, then my entire platoon got sent to KP for the rest of the day. That was ALL of our land nav training. Had to learn everything post-basic. I really hope it's better nowadays. But then again, we did about 10 hours of first aid training (because some just couldn't 'get' it, so we repeated it til they did). Been almost 33 years since, and I still remember that first aid training. Gotta brush up on land nav though.
