Soldiers are required to salute an officer. There are time when they do salute and don't salute though. Ill explain a little about that in this two minute Tuesday episode.

also, if a soldier has the medal of honor you salute no matter the rank. you are not saluting the person, you are saluting the medal from what i know.

I ran into this in 1977. I joined the Army after serving 6 years in the Air Force and then college. We were in formation at traing in Ft Leonard Wood Mo. The Drill Seargent was inspecing us. We were in dress greens. He stopped and saluted a private in our ranks. Turns out the guy served in Vietnam, got out for a few years and came back in because unemployment was through the roof under Jimmy Carter. {keep electing democrats) Even though we were all in the same unit, we never knew about the medal untill that moment. He told us later how he came to be awarded it. I worked with another guy who was given a battlefield commission, RIFTED about 12 years later, and recived the medal at his retirement. The one thing both of them told me, they were scared to death, it's why they did what they did, to save their friends and themselves. It was an honor to know these men. I knew a lot of brave and heroic men in the Army after the Vietnam war was over.

A question, so forgive my ignorance here: if he served in the Vietnam war and got back in, why was he a private? do you men he had to start at the beginning again? Or had he changed forces?
@dosduce
@dosduce 6 жыл бұрын
Yes he had to start all over. There was a rule if you were out for more than two years you lost all of your rank and had to start over. He was a Master Seargent when he got out the first time. I was in the Air Force during the war, got out for more than 2 years but I served in the reserves during those two years so I kept my rank as a seargent. We were in a program for what the Army called retreads. It was called minute man training. We had to learn to use and qualify with every small arm, grenade, rocket launcher, claymore mine, and M60 machine gun, as well as pass the PT test and basic training tests. It took some people only two weeks others two months or more. It took me about a month because I was not in shape. Then I went on to Warrent Officer Flight School. I qualified with so many weapons my flight insturctor thought I was in the infantry, not the Air Force. All of that training came in handy later on in the Army. I know you will ask, everyone does, I liked the Army better. As the commercials say we do more before 9AM then mot peole do all day long.
@lisalalita

"Retreads" - They seriously called it that?! LOL I wonder if you still lose rank after only 2yrs? a bit steep, considering if you survived a war and had a good military record... Thanks for your answer!

I remember in AIT I was out somewhere on base and a Flag officer’s car slowed down and watched me while I was walking, I knew he had nothing better to do but wait for my salute, and the right time I saluted, and held until he returned mine which seemed like an eternity. It makes me wonder if we have too many Generals...waiting for a friggin salute.

I have a coworker who served in the drafted military (reserve training, mandatory for males over 18 here in Brazil). He tells me that the sgt. pulled a prank on a guy in his unit that was very naive, saying that a Major was coming down to inspect the barracks and, since he has a very high rank compared to the soldiers, he had to salute the Major with both hands. The naive guy did that at the first sight of the major; needless to say the major gave him a giant ear chew and the rest of the unite laughed their asses off.

US Navy is similar on land , but onboard a ship is very different . You salute an officer the first time you encounter him on the weather deck , but continue about your business thereafter . If your duties require , you may forgo the salute but give verbal acknowledgement of his presence . Inside the weather deck you continue about your work , but acknowledge him or her with a verbal greeting . If you're on watch status and wearing a watch belt you always salute . If the Captain appears the first to view him shouts " Captain on Deck " and comes to attention . Everyone else follows suit . The Captain will usually shout "Carry On " and the crew continues to work . If not , you clear out of his way and remain at attention until he leaves . (You're a stormtrooper and he's Darth Vader .) If the area is a watch station the call is "The Captain is in/on (inset name of the space) " . Such as "The Captain is on The Bridge " . Upon leaving , the call is "The Captain has left The Bridge " or wherever . The watch standers continue their duties without coming to attention or saluting whether the Captain is coming or going . One interesting form of naval salute is when two ships pass close aboard . The ship with the junior Captain salutes the ship with the senior Captain . This is done by a series of blasts from the Boatswain's Mate of The Watch on his Boatswain's Pipe , and a dip of the ship's flags . Every crewmember outside the weather deck stands to attention during the salute . If the two ships pass close aboard again on the same day this salute is not repeated . Every US Navy and Coast Guard ship Captain has a serial number in a book published by the navy . The lower the number , the senior the Captain . Ships of allied navies ( British Royal Navy , Canadian , Australian , NZ , etc. ) are given the same courtesy . That's how navy ships know which salutes first . Interesting , and confusing to many .

Very good and spot on. I was on a Spruance Class and we had a CO that God ruined a perfectly good dick when he put ears on him. We could be in the ships store and the dick would come in and someone would call "attention on deck" and he'd continue about his business of buying whatever he wanted and as he was leaving he'd say "carry on." I HATED the fk'er. I swear if I ever see that SOB again it's on. He would actually push and slam the junior officers around physically. If that mf'er had ever put his hands on me I swear was gonna cripple his ass but I never saw him touch any enlisted. I even asked JAG officer if I would get in trouble and he told me "No. If he puts his hands on you it's considered 'abandonment of rank.'" People were busting their own hands with a hammer just to get off the ship. That's how bad it was and we even had one suicide but that was before I got there. Anyway, I know it's been a long time but good job of going through all that.

I know a few LTs who are cool with you not saluting if they have their hands full but if I don’t know them I’ll do it anyway. Most of the time they’ll say something like “don’t worry about it” or “you’re good” before you get to them. Same thing if you have your hands full. I’ll always get ready to drop what I have in my hands or switch hands and they’ll just tell me not to worry about it but I still get ready to do it. Never know.

I remember when I was in crypto school in Florida there was a British 3 star on the base. I hadn't seen him yet but we knew he was there. I also had my right arm in a cast up past my elbow. We were just hanging around at the guard shack at the compound and I looked around and there he was. Lol. I don't know where he came from. It was like Scotty beamed him down. Nobody knew what to do so I threw my right arm up in as good of a salute as I could manage and I said "Good morning Admiral." Some of the others didn't salute but he was cool about it. He laughed and told me "Good job on the salute." He was a REALLY nice guy. However, there was a US commander who watched everything and he came over and he lit in to those who didn't salute. I said "I'm sorry commander, I did the best I could." He said "No, no I saw you. You're good. You've got your arm in a cast I understand." He gave the ones who didn't salute an ass chewin for the books. Really, we were only a few months into the military (maybe a month outta basic) and we didn't know what proper etiquette was for foreign officers. I just saluted him because I thought we might have to and figured there was no harm in saluting him. Afterwards I was glad I did.
