The beauty of Sailing is that it resonates with so many people, it can be interpreted as simply being in a boat on the water or as complex as the transition we experience through art. I have been very touched by the way people relate to the song. - Christopher Cross

contrarily, for many of us it reminds us of an era where our parents were completely ignoring their children and going off and playing racquetball and partying with friends and doing other stupid Boomer shit... Interesting part is the part that really sounds like the water. The opening cords were added by the producer after the song was completed and weren’t Christopher Cross’ contribution at all and that repeated sound, which sounds like a gentle waves splashing was the producers.
