The beauty of Sailing is that it resonates with so many people, it can be interpreted as simply being in a boat on the water or as complex as the transition we experience through art. I have been very touched by the way people relate to the song. - Christopher Cross

I remember it was 83'. Back then, my older brother (rest his soul) used to let me borrow his car. Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays… those were my nights. I was a broke kid with a girl, and that car was my ticket to take Lauren (my girlfriend back then, my wife now) out for our weekly dates. The car was something else. My brother had all kinds of little treasures in there: packs of gum, a pair of sunglasses he never wore, and this one cassette that had Christopher Cross on it. The first time I popped it in was our very first date. I wasn’t really into music at the time, but i can really tell on, something. I still remember driving those back roads in Massachusetts, Lauren sitting there beside me, both of us awkward as hell. She’d glance over at me, her eyes lit up with something I couldn’t quite name back then. And then that smooth guitar rhythm kicked in-it was like magic. In that car, that night, I fell in love with two things: her and that song. Thirty-something years later, here we are. Married. A house full of memories. Two kids who somehow turned out pretty amazing. Life’s had its ups and downs, but every time I hear that song, I’m right back there. A clueless kid in his brother’s car, looking over at the girl who’d change his life forever. thanks to Christopher Cross for giving us a soundtrack to fall in love to. And to my brother, wherever you are-thanks for the car, the cassette, and the memories. Miss you every day. And to Lauren… well, you already know. Always, forever, you.❤❤

Interesting part is the part that really sounds like the water. The opening cords were added by the producer after the song was completed and weren’t Christopher Cross’ contribution at all and that repeated sound, which sounds like a gentle waves splashing was the producers. This song takes me back to Rio de Janeiro more than 15 years ago. I was a solo tourist who had followed the Che Guevara Motorcycle Diaries trail across South America, after being inspired by the film of the same name. Brazil wasn't on the trail, but I decided to make it a last stop. I was leaving Ipanema beach at sundown when I jumped into a taxi. On the way from Ipanema to Barra beach, where I was staying, the sun was setting, and it cast a stunning purple-amber haze across the horizon. The ocean had a slight breeze that felt like a warm kiss against my skin, and the coconut trees danced in the wind against the backdrop of that amber-purple sky. At that moment, 'Sailing' came on the radio, and the taxi driver turned it up. I realize now that the song and that ride represented my trip that summer from the Andes of Chile, to Iguazú Falls in Argentina, to the vastness of Lake Titicaca in Boliva, to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru. For those few moments as the song played and I looked out at the most magnificent sunset setting I had ever seen, it was, and still remains, the most perfect moment of my life.
