I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. Today is February 24. Today is the original date for the Festival of St. Matthias. The ELCA now recognizes May 14 as this day. However, some may still celebrate it on this day. No matter, Acts 1:15-26 is read on this day. This epitomizes Matthias.

One thing you're forgetting is that Jesus instructed them to wait for the gift that the Father (God) had promised them. To cast a lot that pointed to Matthias is not the way Jesus would pick his disciple, it's unbiblical. They should have waited for the Holy Spirit to come upon them, to fill them inorder to make the right decision.

Casting lots to determine God's choice between two or more options is VERY biblical. It's how God worked throughout scripture. Read the Bible, bud. We know that Matthias replaced Judas because: 1. It's what the Bible says. 2. The Lord never rebuked them for doing so. He rebuked them for other things, but NOT that. 3. Early church fathers that succeeded the disciples confirm that Matthias was indeed the replacement of Judas. 4. Casting lots is EXACTLY how God made his choice known in MULTIPLE places throughout the Tanakh. It is VERY biblical. Get educated! 5. Paul did NOT meet the requirements, nor will he ever meet the requirements. If Matthias didn't replace Judas, then Joseph was the only other man who had the experience to fill Judas' shoes. But we know that Joseph was never chosen. Therefore, that means there can be no other choice but Matthias. 6. When Jesus said "wait", in what context did he mean? Did he mean that they should do absolutely nothing until the promise of the Father? Did he mean they shouldn't eat? But wait? Did he mean they shouldn't drink? Did he mean they shouldn't speak? Did he mean they shouldn't move? Did he mean they shouldn't use the restroom? Did he mean they should choose a replacement for Judas? OF COURSE NOT! Use your brains, bud. Read the context. Jesus told them to go out into ALL the world (thus effectively making them ALL Apostles to the Gentiles long before Paul). But he told them to wait first. The only thing he didn't want them to do was "go into all the world" before the promise of the Father. Jesus did not tell them to do absolutely NOTHING before the promise of the Father. In proper context, the only thing they were to refrain from doing before Acts 2, was evangelizing to ALL flesh. They needed to experience the Spirit being poured out upon all flesh first. Caphice? So when Jesus told them to wait, He meant that there was something they were supposed to do (go into all the world) after the waiting period. We know that because Jesus just gave them that command before telling them to wait. Simple logic. Doesn't take much intellectual capacity to get that concept. So it was OK to eat, drink, talk, use the restroom, sing, pray, fellowship AND replace Judas. God knows, and they knew that ALL those things were necessary BEFORE Acts 2. And once you understand that the "anointing" to the Gentiles (Spirit poured out upon all flesh) much be released BEFORE they actually go to the Gentiles, then you will realize what Jesus actually said, and why he said it. In other words, Jesus told them to go to all the world, ie "all flesh" (Gentles). But FIRST, they should wait until the Spirit is poured out upon "all flesh". Jesus wanted them to experience that before they fulfilled the great commission. Meanwhile, ALL the disciples and other believers KNEW that Judas MUST be replaced ASAP. God also knew it. That is why He answered their prayer and showed them His choice in perfect accordance with His will, and the scriptures. * your comment, and my response will be published on my blog as many people get this wrong.

Spent 3 years with Jesus resurected and Paul him self says he learned directly from Crist not man. Notice Mattias was not even mentioned at all in the bible after that. 12 is the number not 13 as per Revelations last chapters. One Apostle died after chapter 12 thats way after Paul was already one.

If being an "Apostle" could apply to anyone sent by the Lord then that could include more than just the 12. We all know God chose 12. Jesus said, "Didn't I choose you and yet one of you is a devil?" So, this special Apostleship given to the 12 is specific. We know Jesus chose Paul and the 11 but Matthias was chosen by the 11.

Are you not aware that casting lots has been a method used ALL the way through the Bible to determine God's will? Moses and Aaron used that method to determine God's will. Joshua used it to determine God's will. It was used to select Jonah. It was used MANY more times throughout scripture. More than I have time to write. Proverbs 16 says that the whole disposing of the lot is OF THE LORD. Get educated!

@@ChristopherEnoch 🤔 are you aware that Jesus did NOT use lots to select his twelve disciples? Nowhere in scripture did Jesus say or imply that “casting lots” is a valid method to replace one of his chosen twelve. Proverbs 16:33 asserts that lots (choices) of man’s ethical precepts are cast into the Lord’s lap, left to divine chance. Proverbs 16:33 does not reference the fiction of a Petrine Succession. So QUIT taking verses “out of context”. Get educated! 😮

It’s funny you start at verse 12 and not verse 1. If you start from verse 1, it’s plain and clear that Jesus (who is God) gave the disciples instructions. Specific instructions. He told them not to leave Jerusalem, told them to wait a little while longer , until the Holy Spirit comes to help lead them. Then immediately after he gave them the instructions, he had ascended to heaven. Now, where did he ascend from? Mount of olives. And where is the mount of olives located? Jerusalem. So Jesus and the disciples were literally and physically standing in Jerusalem. Now back to the verse 12… it starts by saying they returned to Jerusalem.. a clear indication that they did not follow Jesus’s commands. They are commands because Jesus told them what to do and what not to do, specifically. And then went up to the upper room to cast lots. It is to my full confidence that we can do nothing without the Holy Spirit. And doing anything outside of what God commands us to do is invalid as far as His purposes are concerned. They couldn’t wait 10 days for the Holy Spirit. Although Jesus sent the Holy Spirit on them after 10 days because God is not slack on his promises, they still did what Jesus told them not to do. And to mention of the casting of lots is to imply that something as important as apostleship to the rest of the world wouldn’t be warranted by the God that does nothing by chance. He never have. Time with Jesus and doing such works as apostles do, don’t warrant saving faith. Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 7:22

It was very interesting these days had discussion with friend , God didn’t choose the Metthis , disciples did. And just they prayed and chooses him for replacement. God forgive . Sure God choose him. Paul was his servant too , as much as love his life and personality from other disciples he paid the price for what he did . And had more persecuted than others he wrote his letters all in chains . He was a great servant of God . I heard from other preachers he was the one replaced by God for Judah but disciple didn’t ask Holly spirit to guid them . Which kind of even they were deeply spent time for prayers in their group . Why God didn’t spoke to them directly? Wasn’t that time already Holly spirit came upon them . As we see God sent Philip to find that men was confused by word of God . But I’m going to lay down my thought He himself proof this to me . 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
