I recently bought the Canon EOS RP, my first FF camera, and I am very happy with it, I also love the colors, sometimes I don't even need to edit my pictures. I fully agree with your review, on the RP there are two more things I don't like : It's sad that the shutter doesn't close on the RP like on the R (5:15), and the feature presented at 5:45 does not exist on the RP, but there's focus peaking (highlights on contrasting edges)

RIght now, I am charging my Eos R via the USB port, which is plugged into my computer's USB-C port. Works like a champ without needing to use Canon's expensive USB charger. It also works with my relatively inexpensive Anker PowerPort II wall charger. I think, when I first bought the camera back in Nov 2018, on firmware 1.0, it didn't do this. But since Firmware 1.1, it definitely charges via USB without the Canon USB adapter. EDIT: the little battery icon on the top screen now says full after being charged from my computer's USB-C port.

I went with the EOS R since I am already a Canon shooter (7D and 5D Mark II) and discovered that I could still use EF lenses with this camera. The 5D Mark IV sensor and the compatibility with my other Canon gear (right down to the batteries) made it a relatively easy decision for me.

Newbie question. I was under the impression that if you're shooting RAW then you didn't need to worry about WB adjustment on camera. If adjusting WB on camera is so important then I'm guessing it can't always be adjusted satisfactorily in post processing?
@rclutsam21125 жыл бұрын
It's really a personal preference. The philosophy of many shooters is to "get it right in camera", and therefore lessen the load in post, while many others subscribe to the "fix it in post" philosophy. There are pros and cons to doing it either way. For example, AWB will attempt to correct color cast based on what the sensor sees. That's not ideal when shooting a sunrise, or sunset. Setting your WB for a particular scene will give you consistency in color across all of your shots, where shooting in AWB can result in inconsistent color due to changes in focal length and lighting. As you stated, when shooting in RAW, all the color data captured by your camera is retained, therefore can be corrected in post. Again, it is personal preference. IMO, and in order to completely master and understand your camera, it should be learned regardless of whether you use it or not.

I have watched nearly all your videos of your Canon lenses with the full frame Canon 6D camera, the APS-C Canon 60D and the older Canon 500D. So I guess that you have many Canon lenses and the choice of the Canon EOS R is reasonable. What I don't like with EOS R is that it doesn't support the EF-M lenses. Probably the EF-M mount wasn't designed with full frame compatibility. E-mount and L-mount for mirrorless cameras was designed better and can use both APS-C and full frame native lenses. Also the Canon EOS R has a long flange distance and can't accept other manual or autofocus lenses for mirrorless cameras. The Nikon Z mount cameras had the advantage with a very short 16mm flange distance. With an adapter the Nixon Z mount cameras can accept manual focus lenses suitable for mirrorless cameras with longer flange distance. For example E mount lenses (18mm), L mount lenses (20mm), Micro 4/3 lenses (19.25), EF-M lenses (18mm), X mount lenses (17.7mm), NX mount lenses (25.5mm) or even the RF mount lenses (20mm). That is really impressive. Actually just a few day ago Techart company has officially announced an AUTOFOCUS Z mount to E mount adapter. Yes an AUTOFOCUS adapter which permits native Sony autofocus e-mount lenses on the Nikon Z mount mirrorless cameras. Just check the KZbin video for the Techart Pro KZbin channel with the title: Introduction to Techart Sony E - Nikon Z Autofocus Adapter (TZE-01). According to the Techart website the Techart Sony E - Nikon Z Autofocus Adapter (TZE-01) will be available late June for 249 US$. Techart is already well known for allowing autofocus to the Leica manual focus M mount lenses on e-mount cameras. The Techart PRO LM-EA7 Leica M Mount Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Autofocus Adapter is very innovative but a little expensive.

I ordered a multi USB charger for my phone and other tech gadgets, has QuickCharge 3.0 for my phone, 3 other usb ports, and most importantly - a USB C port with PD (Power Delivery), which means the EOS R could be charged with it. This means that when I'm at home and when I travel, I carry only one charger with me for all my devices, including for the camera. Just note that only LPE6N batteries are supported for USB-C charging, it doesn't work with the older LPE6 batteries. Not sure if links are allowed here so the charger is called (on Amazon US): USB-C PD Quick Charger, 60W 5-Port Quick Charge, QC 3.0 Fast Charger Desktop Charging Station, Compatible MacBook Air 2018, iPad Pro 2018, iPhone XS/Max/XR/X/8/7, Galaxy S9/S8 and More

That's one of the great dilemas of photography!

I loved this quick review Christopher... I agree with every point you said and wish Canon would get it together!! I still love my old and trustworthy 6D!! That being said, I carry my Fuji XT or my A6000 more often though!

Would have been very interested in the R system if it had a normal tilty LCD screen.
@christopherfrost5 жыл бұрын
I do actually prefer the tilty screen

I would choose the R over the A7R II if it was a choice of only having one camera tbh

The A7r2 is significantly cheaper than the R, that means at least $500 cheaper in my locas dealerships. My local Sony dealership sells the R3 for $50 dollars more than the canon selling the EOS R, which would make them straight competitors, and the Sony win here is undeniable.

The A7Rii is 1500USD here in the states, cheaper than the R. Pretty astounding deal if you tell me.

It is just an amazing deal. The Canon autofocus, screen and colours are all better but apart from that...the a7R ii beats it all over the place

Great review. Well said and straight to the point. 👍🏻👍🏻

I really hope you don't just use this awesome camera for testing lenses. It's the most "usable" modern mirrorless camera imo.

Isn't the Sony a7rii $1500 in the US right now after the recent price drop? Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.

At least where i´m from (Chile), the EOS R costs $50 dollars less than the a7r mark 3... no brainer lol.

I really don't get the size complaints, it's nice and neat and ergonomically sound, unlike Sony's toy-like cameras. It's a meaningless 'con' because it's more personal preference.
@MegaNardman5 жыл бұрын
So is 'ergonomically sound' and 'toy-like,' as well as Frost's preference of Canon colors (vs the old Sony colors). A lot of pros and cons are subjective; if you disagree, that's great, but it doesn't invalidate his list.

@@MegaNardman I'm not the one doing the mini review though. Every other reviewer who's touched the R said it was possibly the most comfortable ML camera out there, and every where you look you'll see people moan about the shit ergonomics of Sony cameras. Weird that he's the only one complaining. I know Sony fanboys love to get butt hurt about everything related to their cameras as if they owned shares, but it's a fact, Sony's cameras are ugly and uncomfortable. They're not popular for those reasons, it's the output.

Hi - you have some Telelenses for the EF-Mount -> can you do a little test with an Adapter for this cam ..?? Why: I have some extreme nice Telelenses for Canon and use this at a Sony A7RIII - the AF is "ok" but at my EOS 1DX Mark II the EF ist faster (at a A9 the AF is slow, too) - so - i hope the new EOS R is better^^.
@christopherfrost5 жыл бұрын
The autofocus using the EF-RF mount adaptor should be pretty much as good as you can get no matter what lens you can put on it - better than the performance using a Sony camera and adaptor
@djspecialpaul5 жыл бұрын
@@christopherfrost Ok nice - i saw you have an Sigma Tele from the Sports Series -> can you test some thing there ..?? . I hope the AF-performence is native like at a EOS 1D X II

Had the RP and returned it. Sensor way too noisy for a new camera. My M50 is cleaner at 100iso. The R is a much better camera. I ended up going with the A7III and absolutely love it. Way better than my last A7RII. Much better colors. I switched to Capture One and love the colors I get with it. Amazing program and never thought I would ever get away from Lightroom. I take pics of cars and the Sony is my favorite. Accurate colors. I would have went for the R if I shot portraits. I had the Fuji XT3 and hated the colors in raw. No matter which program I used, they were so far off. Fun camera though.

As usual, awesome video and although it's quite short, it is informative enough for a "quick look" clip. Thank you, Chris, your channel is my favourite)
