Your opening statement about the book hit hard. The book was so hard to get thru. It's sad to think she was going thru so much abuse and trauma while making millions laugh. I'm older l, so always knew the glitz and glamor covers a lot. It's still hard to hear these young ones and the things they went thru and some still do. As a mother I couldn't imagine hurting my children in any way or any other child for that matter.

The scariest thing about all of this too me is that we all grew up wanted to be a Disney or a Nickelodeon star growing up and hearing all this happening on most of these sets is sickening that these companies don't do anything to protect these kids and then want them to be squeaky clean. It's all the more heartbreaking that her mom didn't protect her from it and instead hurt her

Right? What she said about you as a reader feeling complicit in her abuse is so real, and it's weird cause i logically know that's not the case, I'm younger than Jennette and was just a kid watching icarly and absolutely LOVING it, thinking about how lucky this kids were that they got to be a part of the show, having no idea how dark the industry truly is. Just thinking back now and knowing how much pain she was going through makes me feel guilty for supporting that exploitation, even unknowingly

Jeanette’s book is a breath of fresh air as it shows that people are not obligated to honor or stand by their toxic and abusive family members. My older brother was abusive towards me and my sister and he brought so much trauma to the family due to his incessant need to get into trouble with gangs/drugs/etc. We have been estranged from him for decades and I’ve disowned him since. Anyone who abuses their family is no longer a father/mother/sibling, they are an abuser. Full stop, blood be damned.

I just wanted to reach into the book and hug little Jennette. It broke my mama heart to hear what she went through and how her mom kept failing her. It broke my daughter heart to hear how badly she wanted the approval from her mother that she never got.

Putting it into perspective, not every set was abusive toward child stars. Some truly had a great time acting and didn't have to deal with anything creepy or wrong. Still, it's very sobering to realize how much abuse did and still does occur in the industry. It happens more than we want to admit. Like Jennette, many child stars also have pushy stage parents who force them into acting so they can live vicariously through their children and put far too much pressure on their children to succeed.

I would argue that the strongest thing you could do for your kids is processing past trauma that has not been addressed or is causing distress. The best things we could do for our kids is process our own struggles so they do not bleed into them. You don’t have to choose to be “super mom” or a person conquering their traumas. You could be a amazing mom alongside processing things that you may feel you will fall apart from but are strong enough to survive.Great episode!!

in no way am I deluding myself into thinking I understand what being a mother in your position is like, but while your kids DO need you to be strong, you can’t be strong if you’re not taking care of the things that Jennette’s book unsettled within you. Owning your weaknesses will probably make you a stronger parent in the long run, not to mention how your kids learn and strengthen from watching your vulnerability in action (and how you handle it) I know I always appreciated when my mom got a chance to prioritize herself for once bc I could intuitively tell it helped her be a better mom.

And it awakened something in me as well that got me to get even more help therapy wise than I was already getting, and I feel like I’m making progress in leaps in bounds. I also relate to the magical thinking part learning abt death in religion as a child which was way too soon and it’s just crazy how someone’s honesty about their trauma can really open you up to see yourself in it if you relate to any aspect of it.

What Jeanette did with this book is put into words what the rest of us who had the misfortune of having narcissistic, emotionally/mentally abusive parents couldn’t. I know most people will read this and be shocked by what the mother would say to her own daughter, but myself and countless others I’m sure just took a stroll down memory lane. Only difference is that our parents weren’t stage parents, just troubled people who never wanted to fix their issues. She’s the voice for those of us who still (perhaps in a sad twisted way) still love our parents despite the way they treated us. I’m glad she shed a light on this unhealthy dynamic that takes place in many households across the US but no one ever speaks up because for many years it was only considered abuse if physical or sexual - the rest of us who were mentally/emotionally abused were called spoiled or over dramatic. The parent was always right. That’s part of why, I’m sure, Jeanette seems apologetic for opening up about what/who hurt her because no one was on our side during the time we were growing up. I’m glad that’s now changing though. I’m so grateful to Jeanette, that if I ever saw her in person, I’d like to hug her and might start crying in the process…

I have both the audio book and physical copy as well. I haven’t been able to finish it because it’s so hard to hear. But, so far her writing and the way she tells her story is amazing. Dark, funny…but so polarizing and traumatic. I wish her nothing but the best. I hope writing the book has helped her as well.

I listened to the audiobook when it came out and it resonated with me on so many levels even though I'm not a child actor. The vulnerability you and Jeanette are both willing to share is life changing for so many of us.

It's amazing how different the kids on Dan Schnider shows vs the kids on Scott Fellows shows have turned out. Not that all the kids on Dan's shows have had issues but it seems like a lot more sketchy stuff happened there than any of us really knew.

WOW!!! When I saw this recommendation pop up on my KZbin: I was debating; because I knew that this episode was going to be deep & as your podcast is called, Christy; Vulnerable. and man was this one a tear-jerkier. I am glad that Jennette is not on this episode; because I want her to heal & move forward to this. Unfortunately, we never know what someone is going through: unless someone speaks out against it for however long it may take them. I too saw this book from the popularity, but I did not get this book due to the fact that I knew it would break my heart. ICarly was one of my favorite televisions growing up. Thank you so much Christy for speaking on this!!

i can't tell you how happy i am that jennette wrote this book this really is a true wake up call to all of the abusive parents out there ESPECIALLY the toxic mothers for years society wanted to treat fathers as deadbeats and it's about time someone else finally sees the other side of that i'm so sick and tired of people not understanding that sometimes mothers can be just as bad as fathers i grew up with a toxic mother myself she never wanted me to be who i wanted to be everything i did had to be about her she made me dress a certain way to impress her friends and family i wasn't allowed to have a birthday party with just me and my friends her friends ALWAYS had to be there and if i told her how i felt than she would just roll her eyes and think i'm crazy and make excuses saying "I take care of you i do everything for you you live with me you need me i don't need you" and blah blah blah and yes unfortunately i still live with her but i have been saving money and going to find a place really soon but for now i'm just doing what i want to do and not caring what she thinks and just ignoring everything she says cause NO ONE can control me anymore

Even though my mom thought the Disney and Nickelodeon kids are talented, she always thought (and still thinks) that Hollywood is the devil’s playground. She knew about Corey Haim and Corey Feldman as she was a young adult in the 80s and 90s. Even when I was acting in homeschool productions, she told me she’d never let me go into professional acting. As a kid, I didn’t understand. As an adult, I thank God everyday that I never went into pro acting. I’d rather be broke and happy than famous and violated. Love you, Christy. I’m glad you’re speaking out on this. More child actors need to keep speaking out.

Christy, as a single mom who put EVERYTHING before my mental health or my own addiction struggles. I was a adopted child who was placed in a house of horror. My adoptive dad drugged me from as early as I can remember till into my adulthood. And I had a adoptive mother who was exactly like janettes mom. This book was a huge struggle for me as well. My adoptive mother is a diagnosed narcissist, boardwrline, OCD abusive nightmare human. Who doesn’t believe in mental health or medication for it and definitely doesn’t believe she needs any therapy. I won’t go into the details but I had a horrible life for 37 years. And finally at 37 I chose me. And I joined absolutely every program available for therapy and treatment for my issues. I’m now about to turn 40. It’s still early in my journey but I can not tell you how much it’s helped me. I’m a better mom and fully present mom and I thought I was before that. I would really encourage you to try to talk to a therapist about your feelings brought on by this book and everything else. It’s soooo helpful. And your kids can only benefit from it even if it means time away from them. I respect you so much and applaud what your doing for children in such a vulnerable situation.

One of my favorite bits towards the end of the story is Jeanette deciding to move to her apartment in a local mall, precisely because her family had told her not to sell her house or move into an apartment. Jeanette finally says no and does it. She gets rid of a house she doesn't want and moves into the apartment she wants to move into, and I was like just, "Right on, girl."

I still need to get her book; I’ll prob get the audiobook version. Thank you for posting this episode because I suffer through certain traumatic events from my father and I’d like to see others relate to certain aspects of parenting when it comes to… I can’t explain it. But yes I’ve also pushed off reading this book but I’m more than ready now. She’d be a great guest and it’s so nice to see (always, with everyone you talk about and or have on) you supporting her in this way in a very vocal, yet loving way showing that you’re open to that connection and conversation you’re willing to have with her, if she is as well. Bless you ❤️

Thank you for mentioning not being able to fully pursue therapy while raising a child! I tell my friends that all the time and they just cannot seem to understand. I can’t break down those walls while also being a single parent every minute of every day. I can’t commit that time to myself mentally when there’s no mental time to give.

I listened to this book when it first came out. I choose an audiobook because I knew she read it and it would be more meaningful that way to me. I am in recovery from the same ED as her and her book really touched me. I can relate to her in so many ways. I am honestly so proud of her for speaking out, being herself, and choosing her mental health over anything else. I love that you talked about this because I know you can relate to some other aspects of the book that most of us can’t. Which, is being a childhood star. Sending love to both of you!

I barely survived in my family dynamic of narcissists..😢 I know what Jeanette went through because you don’t know the horror and evil of being abused by narcissistic parents unless you have been through it!make no mistake it’s hell on earth I also plan on writing a book about what I went through and my siblings.. I’m still going through complex ptsd and crippling depression and anxiety 😥 I give Jeanette a lot of credit because I also had an eating disorder for a long time .. love ya Jeanette !!
